For some godforsaken reason, my laptop keyboard is being a bitch. Random keys from the top two lines have decided that they no longer want to work making it impossible for me to write (I'm a fanfic nut so this is like getting off crack for me ) and to try and fix it, my mother had the "brilliant" idea of restoring the computer to how it was the day before, perfectly fine, but this proceeded to delete every clip from WMM that i had so carefully sorted through, named by episode and in order from the episode--gone! and by doing so ruined all my projects that were imcomplete, meaning I have to restart my contest vid for this month - not to bad since I hadn't done that much yet--but my point is still valid. That point being that this sucks i now have to import about 600 Lost clips and files from my hard drive and reorganize them. *waves goodbye to social life* this will take awhile i'd like to blame my mother, but she doesn't really see the problem seeing as the clips are still on my computer so that seems to be a fruitless fight; hense me venting to you lovely people who understand the woes of vidding
Phew, a good rant is good for the soul...i should put that on a bumper sticker...or perhaps in my sig if we get a rant thread...
thanks if you took the time to listen/read my inane chatter

I'm in a relatively good mood right now, but I still feel like adding something to this thread just for the sake of it. I won't go in depth with my most annoying, lingering rant, but just one question:
Why can't men be ugly and women can???
That is all. _________________

That is damn ugly.
It's just a media-type double standard I see everywhere. Like for example, the white house is full of fat comb-over, pasty, pot-bellied guys, and no one says anything, but when Hillary Clinton has a weirdish outfit on everybody tears her apart without hesitation. And on every other commercial it seems, particularly the "funny" commercials, there are ugly young guys and beautiful, skinny young women. Like on some weird ice cream commercial, for example. Three college age friends are sitting on a couch, in the middle there's this guy who looks like an unshaven retarded caveman, and on either side of him are girls that would be considered models, just hanging out with him, because that's the standard. If you're an ugly guy, it's okay, because that can be "funny" and you can have character. Everyone will say something negative if you're a less than perfect woman on TV.
Same with the movies. It's just this attitude that really rubs me the wrong way, that men are so accepted any way they come, at least as it seems to me, and if you're a woman you'll be "unworthy" for society unless you're skinny, pretty and young (and have big boobs). Far more girls get anorexic than guys. And we're bombarded with anti-aging cream commercials because heaven forbid, a woman ages at all.
I hope if you've read all that then you've been able to endure my overreactionary feminism. _________________

That is a valid double standard, and is largely because (put simply) the people that control the media are men, not women, and they can laugh at themselves, but women must all be omg so hot.
The Hillary Clinton stuff is just jealousy and people attacking wherever they can, because they can't find a better weak spot, and because they have too little class to admit it. I say this as someone who is likely voting for the Green Party should Hilary get the Dem nomination, mind you (although if I lived in a swing state, not New York, I'd vote Democrat). The OMG HILARY IS A MANLY WOMAN crap has been around since 1992.
George Bush got elected on the standard 'Who would you most like to have a beer with?', not on the issues, so it's OK if he looks like a loser, because nobody cares. Hilary's presenting herself as a serious, issue-driven candidate, so dumb fools like Rush Limbaugh and Mike Savage and Sean Hannity concentrate on superficial crap.

Again, men run the media; the stereotypical male perception of women filters through. Anti-aging cream is a crock, but there's nothing saying you have to buy it. There are a lot of similar products for guys out there, though, just not for facial wrinkles, because the idea of men aging into older, distinguished looks being a positive thing has been with us for at least 200 years.
I hope if you've read all that then you've been able to endure my overreactionary feminism. [/quote] _________________ I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's. His hair was perfect.

Yeah, I totally get what you mean now. And that's annoying to me too. I mean, you see plenty of amazing looking guys, but there's also old-ish overweight men, that no one ever says anything about...but as you said, everyone always picks on women. And since you mentioned anorexia, did you realize that when women are skinny, people automatically assume they have some type of eating disorder, but if men are, they're fit! Oh jeez. I'm 5'6-7 and 112-15lbs and I never have had any eating disorders, I just watch what I eat etc, but my extended family keeps commenting on how thin I am (cuz I've been losing some weight recently, I used to be about 125 and I looked a little chubby in my stomach area) and one person asked if I was anorexic. Uh...no! I'm not exactly Nicole Richie yet, at 80lbs are whatever. _________________

Oh, that is the worst. I was going to edit my original post and add that in, but I didn't know where to put it without disorganizing my rant. That was the main reason that I didn't want to go see Superbad. (I know advertisements aren't forcing me to do anything, it's just the societal impact that worries me. My family went to the movie anyway, and I trudged with them, but it wasn't nearly as angering or unentertaining as I thought it would be.)
What outraged me the most about Superbad advertising was actually YouTube promo videos on the front page. You know they place clips at a strategic spot so that it showcases a picture in the preview. Well, the main nerds are all showcased in separate videos next to each other, showing mostly their faces with fancy backgrounds and names next to their faces, and then a video promo of only a chick's cleavage shot in the movie. It probably affected me more because I had previously read an article about this very double standard issue, and they touched on how men and women are advertised. You see men's heads/faces in the focus, but the women's focus is on the body, indicating that the men have intelligence/thoughts (because of their head focus) and women are more emotional/appealing (because of their body focus). And anyone can tell it's male POV as well.

Yes, the media is run by male nerds. Thanks for reminding me that, filmchick and wolfie. You've eased my pain a little. _________________

Exactly. I'm not a huge feminist or anything, I'm more of a 'we're all the same, so what's the big deal' kind of person. But seriosuly. This stuff annoys me as well. The media is horrible about this. They focus on women's bodies, and women being sexually appealing, and then they usually come off as sluts. I know some people are, but still. You get what I mean. It's just stupid. _________________

I get what you mean. if i guy sleeps with women, he's just a 'casanova' or something but a woman does it and she's a whore. what's up with that? i could rant about it forever _________________

Tell me something. For example - Do the women that Sawyer cons seem jsut stupid to you, cuz they kinda do to me? But Sawyer? Sure, he's a bit of a slut himself, but hey - He's charming. He's had a hard life. The writer';s make you feel bad for him and push aside his wrongdoings. And I'm a huge sawyer fan, but still. A good example. You feel bad for him, but do you think a lot about the women? I knwo this isn't the best example, seeing as the women aren't the main characters in the story, but media does this all too often. _________________

The women don't seem like sluts, only stupid to let him take their money.
There's nothing wrong with the sex part of it. Screw whomever you want to screw as long as they're of appropriate age and consenting. It's where he takes their money that he goes bad, and for that, as you say, he has a valid (for him) reason to do so, so that dissipates it somewhat. _________________ I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's.
