Yeah, I didn't mean sluts, sorry. I was thinking of somethin else while typing. I meant stupid as you said, and yes, his back-story dissipates it somewhat, but they have you thinking 'oh, those women are stupid to fall for it' not 'Sawyer's awful for doing' is my point. Both are true, but hey... _________________

Oh, certainly. But we already have reason to sympathize with Sawyer by the time we see his backstory. We know he's the antihero. We know that he isn't as much of a badass as he pretends to be. And in the on-island stuff during that, he's being tortured, so he has our immediate, very visceral sympathies on that front. So that blunts the impact of him being a con artist as well.
They used a similar tactic with Sayid: 'Confidence Man' aside, show him as calm (with a slight anger problem), intelligent, understanding, reasonably tolerant, and then bam! He used to torture people. If they had started out with the torture, he would have never had a lot of people's sympathy. Similar with Kate, too: They showed us she was a criminal, a patricide, etc. etc., after they established her as sympathetic on-island. Even in the pilot, they showed us she was escorted by the marshal after we had met her and, presumably, liked her. And even when she is with the marshal, she ostensibly saved his life by putting his mask on, so she's sympathetic despite that hint of darkness.
I think that's more a reflection on how the show gets you to sympathize with flawed characters than it is a male-female thing, unless I'm missing your point - which I may be. _________________ I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's. His hair was perfect.

Nah, you got it exactly. I mostly meant - the show aside, here's a similar idea, but it wasn't he best of examples. Just somethin that popped into my mind, cuz I even find myself thinking a lot worse of the women he cons than of Sawyer at times...Yes, we had reason to sympathize, and they did set the characters up pretty well, but storyline aside, tv does this generally. Well, not always, but often. _________________

Well, yes, but don't forget: You know Sawyer. You're watching his episode after the show's been airing for almost two months. Some random girl isn't going to garner sympathy compared to him at all, just like when Kate goes on the robbery spree, or blows up scuzzy stepdad, you don't really care about any of the bit players in those scenes. It's natural to cheer for the focus character in any given scene.
However, would you think the same of men conned by a female con artist? For myself, I'd probably think they were dumber, actually. I don't know what that says, but that would be my reaction. _________________ I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's. His hair was perfect.

Actually. I agree with you. I probably would think the man would be dumber, but then doesn't that sound stereotypical and what we've been speaking against? Why would it sound dumber for a man be tricked by a woman, than for a woman to be tricked by a man? Is that saying that women aren't as smart as men? Just another question I thought of. Is this way of thinking just ground into us, that us women even think that way at times? Just struck me as funny...and strange. _________________

I've never gotten that vibe. I think I've always kind of gotten a 'Sawyer's awful for doing it' vibe and not a 'they're stupid for doing it' vibe. I guess it's just perspective. And they were all just flashback secondary characters anyway. It goes both sexes. You don't get to really know their side of the story, or really need to for that matter. (whoops, missed this whole dialogue )
littleton_pace, that's another rant I share. Geez, there are so many of them. But I feel so much better discussing all this instead of just thinking alone about it. Whenever I've actually gotten to the point of anger about these certain things, all I really wanted is to know that I'm not the only one who sees what's wrong about it, and that other people out there are mad too. That does wonders. It also totally helps to clearly understand why.
One last thing: it's not really irritating as much as it is confusing. Why, on "Funniest Commercials" shows, do they devote a whole category to sexy women commercials? They're not funny at all! They serve no joke purposes, just arousal purposes, and they're honored in a funny commercial show. That's just screwed up. They have it every year. Do they even realize that they have a variety of viewers? _________________

Do they really, though? I'm willing to bet that the viewership skews heavily to teenage boys, given the content of the program and when it generally airs (midnight Saturdays.) _________________ I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's. His hair was perfect.

OMG! That annoys me too! Those stupid funniest commercial things ALWAYS have vaguely 'sexy' commercials (because of the women in it) sprinkled through that are somewhat funny (or supposed to be) and then they have a whole section that aren't funny at all, as you said. It's so strange! They shouldn't even be on there.
And Kate, for me, it airs on Fridays/Saturdays around 6 and then re-airs a few times. It's not that late. my little sis watches with us, and now my mom is all freaked out about them. I don't' want my sis watching them either! Or my 16 year old bro for that matter at times! hehe
And yes...I have gotten both vibes. I've gotten the 'They're stupid' vibes, but I've had a lot of time to get the 'gosh, he's so horrible for doing this'; vibe too. Don't worry, it's not that I don't think that, it's just that on a few boards I've been on (which is what brought the idea into my head) made more fuss about the women and how stupid and slutty they are. And I'm thinking 'What abotu Sawyer??' sure, we have reasons, but you need to blame him a bit. _________________

Well, I guess. But there's no way I can be sure. All I know is that my whole family loves to watch batches of funny commercials, just like AFV, and I really love to laugh at them. I may often times use myself as a case and forget that I'm not really like other women. I was obsessed with The Three Stooges as a preteen, and I think only boys like that kind of stuff. Sometimes that's my problem. *shrug*
The host(s) seems to make his brief monologues addressing anybody. Even family. _________________

Aha. I always see it pop up late night in between the infomercials and endless reruns of early '90s TGIF. _________________ I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's. His hair was perfect.

Those are just reruns. They initially air them on primetime once a year at a relatively early timeslot (I think) and advertise it a lot before it airs. _________________

I added you to my faves
I'm a huge worrier and I get extremely upset about school. I started writing something on bebo describing my days through the eyes of a fictional character so that kind of eased the stress I think. As for today's rants I got up and sat in front of the TV hoping to have my morning fix of Friends but I got the time wrong and had to watch "Beauty And The Geek" (which is so fake btw) until it came on. And then when it did come on the TV went strange 0_0 and I got this blue screen that showed up Caught most of it though. Sucks since I've been a whole week without English TV.

Minor snack rant: 'Flavor-blasted buttermilk ranch pretzels' should not imply 'super salty flavor, and nothing else, although the package says these are buttermilk ranch pretzels.'
(Yes, Kat, I'm still bitter about that!) _________________ I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's. His hair was perfect.
