I was just about to write "fantasy/sci-fi" until I read between the ()'s again! So, I'll try to be a bit more creative than that...

[bragging voice]Out of the 9 short stories that I've had published in professional magazines and anthologies, 8 of them were in the "Xena-ish field of fantasy" and the 9th was sci-fi humor.[/bragging voice]

And in case you're wondering, no, I don't give out the names of what they were published in. Why? Because somebody might happen to find a copy of the very first one I sold. In which I was dumb enough to give my age, 'cause I was proud of being sorta young at the time. So therefore if y'all should happen to be able to add, then you'd know how old I am now. And we just can't have that. LVI would crash. "Lost" would end. Josh Holloway's dimples would go on strike. Jack would stop shaving and grow a ZZ Top-style beard down to his knees. Locke would grow an Afro. Kate would become a nun. That sort of thing. I can't have that on my conscience, you understand...

The Amazing Adventures of Aislynn

Episode 1x14: Taking Sides.

Day 61: The Marci’s hiding Place.

Vicky woke up on a cold floor. She rubbed her eyes and yawned, then looked around. She was in a beautiful looking old place. But where it was, she had no idea.

“Hey!” said a voice from behind her. It was one of the Marci. “I see you’re awake now, then, eh?”

Vicky thought fast and fell back to the ground as if she had never woken.

“Don’t play dumb with me!” said the soldier.

“Damn.” Said Vicky.

“Now, you’re gonna tell me where that money is, alright?”


Aislynn, Josh, Nate, Paul and Boone stood outside the Louvre Museum.

“This is it.” Said Paul.

“What makes you so sure that the Marci have held Vicky captive in that giant glass triangle?” asked Aislynn.

“Obviously you guys didn’t see the Marci’s hats!” boasted Paul.

“What?” asked Josh. “Our lives were in danger and you were looking at their fashion?”

“Maybe he’s gay.” Laughed Nate.

“No!” said Paul, annoyed. “Not their fashion! I was just looking at the weird shape…”

“Oh, god!” said Nate. “Wasn’t it good enough quality?”

“Shut up!” said Paul.

“Gay.” Said Nate. He and Josh exploded into laughter.

“I’M NOT GAY!” yelled Paul. “JUST LET ME FINISH!”

There was an awkward silence. Nate broke it.

“Homo.” He whispered quietly.

Paul continued as if he hadn’t heard Nate’s stupid joke. “Anyway…their hats were in the shape of a giant pyramid. Just like the one here! Duh!”

“Oh…” said Nate.

“Good work, Paul!” said Aislynn. She walked towards the door.

“Wait!” yelled Josh.

“What?” asked Aislynn.

“We don’t know what could be in there! They could’ve taken over the whole museum!”

“Oh, please!”

“Seriously!” said Josh. “I mean, look at that statue!”

Josh pointed at a statue outside the museum, of a muscular body. It looked like someone had stuck on a plastic version of one of the Marci’s heads.

“Oh.” Said Aislynn. “I guess we could climb through that panel at the top of the roof.”


Vicky searched her pockets. “I…” she began. “I can’t find it!”

“That ain’t gonna work on me!” said the Marci. “Go on, hand it over!”

“I’m not joking!” said Vicky.

The man knocked over a giant statue nearby. “Give us it now!!!”

“Why are there so many statues here?” asked Vicky, changing the subject.

“We’re in a museum.” Revealed the man.

“Ugh.” Said Vicky. “That’s what the smell is. Education.”


“AHH!” said Nate as he jumped down into the museum.

“What?” whispered Aislynn.

“It’s educational fun!” he said, pointing at the dinosaur statue nearby.

“Oh, shut up!” said Aislynn.

The group looked around the place, walking around on tip-toes.

“This place is huge!” said Josh. “She could be anywhere!”

“Hmm…” said Paul. “We could split up.”

“No.” said Aislynn. “That’s dangerous.”

“Wait…” said Nate. “I think I know where she is!”

“Where?” asked the others.

Nate pointed at a door leading to the Knife Exhibition.

“They’re obsessed with knives!” said Nate. “They’d love it there!”

“Oh, good thinking, Nate!” said Aislynn, excited. Without thinking, she jumped forward and kissed him.

“Oh…” said Aislynn. “Oops…”

Josh’s jaw dropped, and he fell to the ground.

“Oh crap.” Said Nate. “That’s the last thing we need! Someone to faint!”

Paul stared, amazed. “You guys are together?”

“Err…yeah.” Said Aislynn. “Look, we’ll tell you things later, just promise you won’t tell Josh or Vicky when they come back!”

“You expect me to just lie and say it was all in Josh’s dream?” asked Paul.

“Yeah.” Said Aislynn and Nate.

“Hmm…Okay.” He picked up one end of Josh’s body while Nate picked up the other. They headed towards the Knife Exhibition.


Colin walked in to the room where Vicky was in. “So,” he said. “I hear you’ve been saying you don’t have the money with you…”

“Yes…” said Vicky. “And it’s true.”

Colin’s face went angry. “Well then WHERE THE HELL IS IT?!?!?” he screamed.


“Did you hear that?” asked Aislynn, about to open the door to the Knife Exhibition.

“Yeah.” Said Paul. “Sounded like Colin.”

“Okay, guys, this is it…” said Aislynn. “Prepare to fight!”

The group charged into the room ready to fight off the Marci…instead they only found one of the Marci, Colin, and Vicky tied to a chair.

Colin stared at them. “Do you people have the money?”

“You’re not getting it!” said Nate angrily.

“Oh, I think I will.” Said Colin, his eyes growing wide with evil.

“Why are you doing this, Colin?” asked Aislynn. “You used to be such a nice guy!”

“Shut up!” said Colin. He turned around to face the wall.

“You know you still like us!” said Paul.

“I do not!” said Colin angrily. “I’m evil to the core!”

“I don’t wanna know where his core is.” Said Nate, disturbed. Paul and Aislynn laughed. Colin glared at them madly, but suddenly began to laugh. And it wasn’t an evil laugh.

“Aha!” said Vicky. “You’re laughing! You are a nice guy!”

“Alright, fine!” said Colin. “Maybe I’m not pure evil, but I have to work for Dial-Up!”

“That’s right!” came a voice. It was Dial-Up. “Now, kill the girl!”

Vicky screamed. Colin picked up a knife and held it up high. He closed his eyes so he didn’t have to see what he was doing.

“No!” yelled Vicky.

“No!” yelled Paul.

“No!” yelled Nate and Aislynn.

“NO!!!!” yelled Josh. He woke up and looked around at Nate and Aislynn. “You guys were having an affair?”

“Err…” said Nate. “No.”

Colin turned around and dropped the knife. “No!” he yelled. “I can’t do it!”

Dial-Up grew very angry. “Will you people stop saying ‘No’?!?”

Dial-Up ran towards Colin, who had just untied Vicky. Boone sped up and tripped over Dial-Up. Aislynn picked up Boone and the group, now with Colin again, ran out of the museum. They were safe. For now, anyway.

Loved this chapter, Marcus! I sat here and laughed myself silly the whole time. I can just picture this all unfolding -- though what that says about ME I'm not really sure...
