alright, i'll try and explain it the best I can from my point of few. I wouldn't hold your breath cos this may be long :

Alright, i love AU's for one reason, they're AU. And if you go into that thinking that yup, this isn't real its just a make-believe story then you enjoy it more. I love making them, especially ConMama, because its really not that easy. To make Sawyer and Claire work you have to find scenes that make sense and follow a story and even then its hard. I also like it because you can do something totally non Lost, doesn't even have to relate to the island at all. example: Sayid as a solider is told he has to kill Kate or he'll be killed himself. that kinda thing. So you can literally go in a million differnt directions without ever mentioning the island or the crash. not to mention you can take character that were once always cheery and make them full on evil if you want

To me, a Jate vid or a PB&J vid is just that. And i rarely watch them unless they are made by ppl I know will not make them like the norm. Cos some of them out there are just jack and kate, or charlie and claire, scenes set to music with like no effects or storyline *HATES vids that have no story line, see below rant * whereas with an AU, you never know what scenes ppl have used. That's half the fun for me, seeing someone use say, a scene from sawyer in the hatch with a scene of Jack from a flashback. and it works! Also, i love when vidders manage to make scenes that blow my mind. Some that i've seen include, Jack/Sawyer sex, Kate/Claire kissing, Jack/Kate kissing/sex. these have been cut from two differnt scenes and somehow merged together to create a feasible AU; to me that's genius editing.

Another reason? It's really quite fun to think of these things. Like I'm working on another ConMama vid right now. And a lot of ppl have done the "Sawyer's a con; he con's Claire but wont take her money cos he loves her' story so Im going to go at it like Claire's the dysfunctional one in the relationship. And to find scenes/audio that suit that is a real challenge; but a fun one at that.

That's not to say that there arent some bad AU's out there, there are. But some of them literally blow me away. Check out Lostaway's vidding catalogue here and on youtube and you'll see what I mean. She's got Jaire, ConMama, Jawyer, Jarlie. All genius.

I just find that a Lost vid, tho sometimes breathtaking, is always gonna be a Lost vid. About Lost, about one of the characters, about the island or a ship or something Lost-related, where in an AU you can do anything. Even crossover TV shows, which has been done exceedingly well by a few vidders. And there's meant to be a buffy/sawyer vid coming up in a couple of days that im eager to see.

So there you are, my lengthy explanation of why I love AU :D

onto the aforementioned rant: Vids with no storyline: sticking random clips together to a song is a sorry excuse for a vid; no offense to anyone. none/limited effects and just clips of people/person together is very boring to watch. Come on, use the flash in white effect (a fave of mine ) at least!!!

Thanks for the explanation. It seems, from what you're saying, that AU lends itself to ships really well, and I couldn't care less about that (though I like your Sayid storyline, as that's a little more story-driven, and a little more what I'd be interested in doing, if I were going to do an AU.) I can see, from your description, how Sawyer and Claire would be a challenge from a technical perspective, as they haven't got a lot of scenes together, and especially with Claire, not Sawyer, being unstable.

And I will agree with you about the videos with no storylines, of course. That's another reason why I stay away from shipper vids, as there does seem to be no storyline to some of them besides 'We're totally in love,' or 'We hate each others' guts,' and that ain't interesting.

I am allergic to Buffy, so there's that - but I still am interested more in exploring the possibilities of the videos set on the island. I like having that framework, in a way. Still, you've made some interesting points, and hell, I'm considering giving it a shot (as a non-shipper vid), and that's more than I was thinking of before.

Thanks for the explanation, and again, no offense meant. It's just that I kept on seeing AUs and kept on having very little idea why they appealed, so I figured if I could grab an explanation, it couldn't hurt.

I shall have to enlist you as my AU beta (and Kate too, if you'd like, since you're more in my camp. Heh.)

in regard to my first rant; i ordered a new keyboard for my godforsaken laptop. its a USB one so ill have two keyboard, only one functioning, then i can get back to fanfic writing im in withdrawl atm
