March 2013
Indie Film Appreciation
Deadline: April 3 - extended!
Details:
Whether they make it big like Silver Linings Playbook, or stay relatively unknown like Ten Inch Hero, everyone’s probably got an indie film or two they love! This month, we’d love to see you vid those indie films and show us what makes them so special. Even though they’re not movies everyone may have seen, you love them, and we want to see why!
Specific Contest Rules:
-Make a vid about one indie film.
-No TV shows or multifandom.
-No AUs, Crossovers, or OCs.
-Running time should be no longer than 5 minutes. We suggest the 3 - 5 minute range.
-The more creative, the better. Don't be afraid to take risks.
-When entering your video on the Submit page, you MUST enter "March 2013 contest submission" exactly in your vid's description.
General Contest Rules:
-Contest submissions should be entered through the Submit page
-All regular submissions Rules apply.
-Only one entry per vidder
Videos already submitted and RELEVANT can be submitted again, but we would rather see something fresh. (Please contact a CM if you wish to enter a previously-submitted video)
-Please do not use Rapidshare or Yousendit as your only hosting place.
-If you're using Youtube as your primary link, please also provide us with an alternative link. Far too often, YT is either disabled or muted by the time the contest is ready to be judged. Mediafire and Sendspace are just a coupleof the sites out there that can be used as reliable backup links.
-Keep in mind that however you choose to host your video, it must be available to be watched at least until after the deadline has passed. If we can not access your video at the time of judgment it will not be considered.
-Have fun! _________________

Very excited about this contest! There are so many amazing indie films!
If anyone needs clips from their favorite indie movie, let me know and I'll see what I can do. I have a bunch and can get trailer clips, too. _________________

How do I tell if the movie I would like to use is an "indie" movie? _________________

Typically a movie that has a low budget is an indie film.
An independent film is a professional film production resulting in a feature film that is produced mostly or completely outside of the major film studio system. In addition to being produced and distributed by independent entertainment companies, independent films are also produced and/or distributed by subsidiaries of major film studios. Independent films are sometimes distinguishable by their content and style and the way in which the filmmakers' personal artistic vision is realized. Usually, but not always, independent films are made with considerably lower film budgets than major studio films.[1] [2] Generally, the marketing of independent films is characterized by limited release, but can also have major marketing campaigns and a wide release. Independent films are often screened at local, national, or international film festivals before distribution (theatrical and/or retail release). An independent film production can rival a mainstream film production if it has the necessary funding and distribution.
HOWEVER there are popular movies that are independent. Like Juno and Silver Linings Playbook.
Is there a film that you are questioning Andy?
I have to say I'm really excited about this. I love independent movies, and I think it's great that I can introduce one to people and being introduced at hte same time. |

Yes, this one:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0448134/?ref_=sr_3
Box Office
Budget: £26,000,000 (estimated)
Opening Weekend: $242,964 (USA) (20 July 2007)
Gross: $3,675,072 (USA) (12 October 2007)
Company Credits
Production Co: DNA Films , Ingenious Film Partners , Moving Picture Company (MPC)
It won a "British Independent Film Award" so I think it qualifies? _________________

I'm pretty sure that Sunshine was an independent movie.
Yeah I think anything that is nominated for indie awards are allowed. Because Silver Linings Playbook (which is in world wide theaters) is considered an indie film, it was nominated and took the Spirit awards, which are another independent award.
That's a good movie, I'm looking forward to that vid. |

Yep, Brooke is right!
And since Sunshine was distributed by Fox Searchlight, it is definitely an indie since that is 20th Century Fox's independent film division.
Other tips in case anyone else is stumped:
1) Use Google, IMDb.com, and Wikipedia to search for details about your movie.
2) If the budget is under 20 million, it's probably an indie.
3) Do a search on the studio and distributor and see if either are associated with indie films. Look at awards/accolades and see if it was nominated for any independent film awards.
4) Google "film name"+"film festival" and see if the movie debuted at Cannes, Sundance, Telluride, Tribeca, or another film festival.
Your movie does not have to meet all of the above criteria. Just see what you can find out and use your best judgment.

I'd be careful about using Indiewire, because they talk about massive block buster films like Titanic as well. |

Could I get an extension? I have a couple of ideas floating around and I'm hoping to get one of them done for the contest. _________________
