|
|
Quote: | For the past 24 hours the hugely popular MegaUpload file-hosting service has been rendered inaccessible across many countries around the world. With the United States government ‘Cyber Monday’ domain seizures fresh in everyone’s mind, fingerpointing has been directed at the U.S. authorities. The problems, however, seem to be rooted with the site’s domain registrar since they appear to have ‘seized’ MegaUpload’s DNS records following a dispute. |

Also in that article, you can find lists of other similar sites that are being targeted for closure, such as Filesonic and 4shared as well as all of the major torrent sites.
At this point, Megaupload/Megavideo is expected to start working again since this wasn't an official shutdown and they're saying it's just a dispute over their domain. But it's a good (in the bad way ) preview of what will happen if something like SOPA should pass. A lot of hosting sites will simply disappear and, for vidders, that's going to make it a LOT more difficult to share our work.
This is all related to what was being discussed in this thread. Even if you're not in the US, this is going to have far-reaching impact for every vidder AND vid watcher, no matter what country you're in.
UPDATE:
Quote: | Update 30th Nov: MegaUpload inform us that there was indeed a nameserver issue affecting the site but there is nothing to worry about and everything is back to normal.
In rare cases it might take a while for every DNS server around the world to be updated (rarely up to 48 hours) but normal service should have already been resumed. |
So at least they're back up for now. But this could definitely be a "Ghost of Christmas Future" for what could happen if laws like this pass and hosting sites start disappearing.

I can't believe this. This is RIDICULOUS. There are worse things going on in the world then this.
I am embarrassed at this. |

I don't see filesonic mentioned in the article? I hope they don't kill filesonic.. I have a premium account tilll March.
They might end up bringing down the one provider but a number of filehosters will spring up in it's place. They are never going to win but it's annoying if you rely on certain ones. _________________

Brooke, I completely agree! There are so many things, from homelessness to people who don't have enough food to eat to people without adequate health care, that are more important than going after movie/music piracy. Not saying that they don't have the right to not want their products to be illegally downloaded but I somehow doubt that the movie and music copyright holders are living on the street from the revenue lost from piracy so that the government has to act quickly to save their lives.
Paul, the mention of Filesonic is here...
Quote: | Aside from BitTorrent sites the RIAA also wants cyberlockers such as Megaupload, Filesonic and 4shared to be dealt with, as well as the search engine FilesTube, and the forum Warez-BB.org. And there is more. |
It's on this page down under the list of torrent sites.
There have always been other sites that pop up when ones like these get closed but the bad part if these laws do pass is that it'll make it easy for the new sites to immediately get blocked (if they're based out of the US) or shutdown completely (if they'r within the US) as well.
Here's an update for the first article...

So it looks like MU is back up for now at least. Mannnnnnn, it'll really suck if they do start managing to block/shutdown hosting sites for real! *keeps fingers crossed that they don't* |

Right now I think the president KNOWS he has more fish to fry and this isn't one of them. At least I hope he does.
I think it's hard; I mean...there are a networks who don't care about fanvids. I think fanvids are a form of flattery; I would be flattered if someone made a fanvid of my show.
Bones creators used the idea of 'beat use' because of fanvids; they said that in an interview.
Evangaline Lilly said that before season 5 she'd watch all of the seasons to get back into the feeling of Kate; then she started to watch fanvids.
ABC made a contest for fans to make their own Lost trailer.
I have a question. IF this does happen; what will happen with LVI? I for one hope that just because we couldn't post videos here; that we could still have this place. It's more then just a place for people to check out my work. At least that's how I feel. |
