Hating fictional characters means my hate is also fictional so that makes it okay I am not a pussy dammit!
I have to say I am not a big fan of the new Alias characters. I don't hate them. I just don't see the point of them and I wasn't too impressed by them trying to ship each other last week when they are so new. That was just weird. I really miss Vaughan. _________________

So wait... just to clarify, when should we hate actors or characters? Lets say someone does come on who nobody can connect to at all, the character's backstory seems really lameass, even though it's the strangest and more intriguing of them, and yet the camera keeps focusing on the character heavilly every episode. This actor who plays this character has been on other shows, all with very simillar roles that also never got any real response from any fans, and was never really liked. At which point is it the actor's fault and not just the character's? If this keeps happening then why can't the actor just be blamed? |

The first thing they teach you in film school, day 1, is that if a project is going to fail it is going to ultimately fail in one of two places:
1. the writing
2. the directing
Now it takes 3 things(in the below listed order) to make a good movie or TV series:
1. writing
2. directing
3. acting
Notice how acting is the last element. While it is what we actually see on the screen they are low on the list of available blame. And if you want to start blaming the actors then make sure you do your research and find out the name of the casting director and the executive producers and blame all of them together because they hired the actor based on the sides they gave them to perform. The casting director pased along the persons audition tape to the producers and they fdecide on call-backs and they ultimately have final say in the hiring. So if you want to get into specifics on when you can blame the actors then please at least do it informed and blame all the people that led to that person getting that job.
I know that while some characters are made to be hated that there are some actors that just shouldn't be in the business but you can't blame them alone. They got the job because somene gave it to them. So while that actor may have been a shitty choice for the part don't attack the actor for a decision that ultimately they didn't have any control over. Actors are just people and that is another thing that bother me about the paparazzi is that they have immortalized these people that are simply just doing what they love to do. The media as a whole have created this insane craze over people that if they weren't actors we wouldn't even know they existed. So before you attack an actor for a part they are playing ask yourself if this actor was just some stranger ont he street how would you treat them? Like you wanted to be treated with some sort of human respect or would you treat them like shit? Because no matter how much any fan thinks they know about an actor they don't knwo everythign so would you verbally attack a complete stranger on the street?
Some of you may think I care about this to much but this is my future profession and I hope to one day do a series and if I screw up in a casting decision then I want people to blame me and not the actor. I made the final decision not them. I hired them so hate me because I'm the one that had the power over the situation. That's the way I think about it. So if you don't like the new characters on Alias then be angry at JJ Abrams. If you don't like the new Lost characters blame JJ Abrams. If you don't like the new Charmed character then blame Aaron Spelling. This stuff of blaming the actors seems pointless to me when there are so many other people you can blame that actually had a choice to make.
So to actually answer the question Warren asked. I can't tell you when it is the right time to blame an actor because I don't believe an actor should catch blame for stuff and I sure as hell don't think they should be verbally attacked. If you don't like a character then fine some are made to be hated (I don't like Locke but I love Terry O'Quinn) but don't go after the actor behind that character. They are two different people.
All I would ask of you anyone that reads this is that if you must hate an actor don't do it in a hateful evil way like trying to get them kicked off a show. Voice your opinion but do it in a constructive way becasue you never know when someone from that show MAY come across it. They have internet access just like us so keep that in mind. Think about how you'd feel if you were surfing the net and you came across a message bashing you. I can't stop anyone from bashing an actor but I can at least try and tell you guys the way the process works and hope that at least a few people realize it is hardly ever just the actors fault if a series or character fails.
Okay this turned into a much longer rant then I'd intended it to...lol. Hope I didn't offend anyone but it's a topic I have strong opinions on so I tend to get going when I get to talking about it. Anyway, take away from this what you want just think a little before you bash an actor and if you must bash them for the job there doing at least include the names of the people that hired them. _________________
