As some of you may know, my parents run a small sheep farm (hobby-style farm of about 15 ewes, all Romney sheep, with one ram, two goats, and a llama). The first lambs were born around 2 PM EST today! Here are some hopelessly cute photos of two-hour-old lambs (the yellow-looking one hadn't been cleaned yet from being born, because she's more interested in eating than in standing still--she was by the time we left, though). The girl is Eve; the boy (already cleaned) is Adam (since they were the first two to be born, haha)

Sorry the photos are slightly crummy; the only camera I had on-hand was the cheap one that's literally held together with duct tape. And yes, the lambs are wearing 'sweaters' in some of the pictures; they're hacked-up sweatshirts remade into lamb-shaped sweater/blanket/poncho garments to keep them warm from the cold. We'll probably have several more lambs next week, since two of the other ewes are massively pregnant.

I hate to add this, but:

RIP, Eve. (3/15/10-3/17/10). She died overnight; I only just found out. Life is fragile. Hopefully next update will be happier.

We think that she wasn't getting milk from her mom: Adam was being bottle-fed with lamb formula since he couldn't find his mom's udder yet, but Eve found the udder, and we believed that she was getting milk from it. She might not have been. Alternately, she might've gotten rolled over on during the night and been unable to breathe. She was fine last night, but dad found her this morning.

Unfortunately, it's 'one of those things' in a certain sense--not all farm animals make it, in the same way that people or house pets do--but it still is kind of sad, obviously.
