I like your thoughts, Kate. Seems plausible to me that FLocke might try and get at them through their weak spots.

Once more, we agree on your unpopular opinions. (Is there some sort of petition I can sign?) I haven't got much clever to add, except to say that telling Sawyer, of all people, that he was manipulated and that Jacob pulled his strings is a sore spot for a con man. Telling Sawyer he's dumb, or an asshole, or anything else besides gullible wouldn't do anything but get a rise out of him.

To that end, I expect he'll go after:

* Jack by saying that he's incompetent/incapable
* Sayid by saying that he's bad/evil (and we've already seen hints of that with the whole pill debacle)
* Hurley by saying that he's a loser/a failure
* Jin/Sun by ... ? Possibly by trying to break up or weaken the marriage.

Just a guess, but I think it's a solid one.

I think it's interesting that he is being manipulated right now, he's not as easy person to manipulate either, being a con man.

BUT I found the smoke monster easily manipulated people, IE, Ben. Ben who is best known for smudging and omitting the truth and easily manipulating people.

But I agree, he's going after the people who's list is on the cave. It didn't seem like to me Sawyer was being added to a side, it seemed like he was trying to convince Sawyer to leave the island.

So in what order will Flocke go after them, do you think?

I'm placing bets on either Hurley or Sun/Jin as last. They seem to be the strongest right now, mentally speaking. Jack's never been a tough nut to crack, and Sayid's in a bit of a spot right now.

I think Hurley's the toughest at the moment. He's gone all badass, which is AWESOME. So FLocke might pick him last, yeah.

I think Jack might be tough to crack in this. Everyone else is willing to go home. Jack knows his place is on this island.

I think Hurley will be last, he seems to be pretty firm too.

You would think Sawyer isn't easily manipulated, would you? But--and this is a major qualm I have about the character--he's been shown as being pretty easily duped (not a good trait for a con man to have). Right now, through a death-wish and despair, he's believing whatever Flocke is telling him.

Beyond that, though, look at 'Every Man for Himself,' after all, with the #8 rabbit. He falls for that snow job pretty easily, which always amazes me. I don't know if that can be attributed to the stress of being in captivity and dealing with Pickett all the time, but I'm always like, 'Why aren't you asking more questions and/or thinking this through, idiot?' each time I watch the episode. And I like Sawyer.

I think Sawyer's easy manipulation comes from his connection to Kate and Juliet at the respective times. In Every Man For Himself; kate's life is being threatened if he doesn't co-operate, he goes along with it to keep her from harm. With Flock; I think he's so devastated over the loss of Juliet and doesn't give a crap where he ends up, he'd rather take the chance and die with Flocke then stay depressed on the island with Jack and Co.

Totally on board with the devastation/death wish, hence the mention, but... he seemed so quiet and accepting in 'The Substitute' after they left Dharmaville, which jarred me some.

Furthermore, I'll buy that he has a weak spot for women he cares about (and will toss Cassidy in with the other two, per 'The Long Con'), but that weak? I just don't know if someone who is a pro (if not a terribly successful pro) at swindling people would completely be fooled by things; I'd like it if he were written as being a little more suspicious sometimes.

I honestly don't think he wants to die. When he thinks he's about to fall off that cliff, he was scared out of his mind. You saw that fear.

I think if someone was threatening Juliet, maybe he would take the plunge.

But we also have to remember that on some level, Sawyer is growing up, Juliet has died, yes. But he does have things to live for, for instance I think he's willing to be a father to Clementine.

I don't think it's a death mission in this case.

He's going to be easily swindled. Right now not only is Sawyer possibly still a bit drunk, but having a hangover. He just lost the woman he loves., and blames him himself.

The love that Sawyer had with Juliet was actually something real. It was something he never really experienced, that kind of a connection.

So he's going to be easily manipulated here. He's miserable and he's vulnerable.

Saying that since Sawyer is a conman and that he can never be manipulated or tricked is a stretch.

Also as we have seen, MIB knows his words, he knows these people. He knows what to say how to say it, and when to say it.

I think Ben is far more intelligent than Sawyer is, and yet he was manipulated, because MIB knew what to say and how to say it.

Oh, I'm not saying 'because he's a con man, he can never be manipulated.' I wouldn't even go nearly that far; after all, the show's pointed out that it's distinctly not the case.

I'd just like him to keep his wits about him a little more when it matters. It seems like whenever he needs to be mildly suspicious, he is, but when big, bad stuff goes down, he loses all of his prior suspicion and just goes along with things (maybe because the writers don't want him to be the lynchpin, which I can understand--when he is suspicious, he does tend to drive things.)

Were we ever told in 'The Substitute' or in prior episodes how far the trek was from Dharmaville to the cave of names, per the hangover?

And the Suliet thing never entirely convinced me, but Skate, Jate, and Jacket don't really, either; I'm not sure if that's my fault or the show's (there have been only three loving relationships that have convinced me, none of which involve any of the above people). I'll agree he's miserable and he's vulnerable, but after multiple years on the island, he should know how to keep those emotions in check and be a little more competent, I guess.

I just don't buy that someone who's spent three years keeping up the whole 'Jim LaFleur' thing and previously spent his time being the antagonist of the whole survivors' camp wouldn't be a little more... I don't know, attentive? Thoughtful? Maybe it's just me projecting there, though.

I will readily agree that Ben's far more intelligent than Sawyer (and far better of a con man, from what the show's given us), and that the fact that he was conned proves that MiB is incredibly sharp, but I just want the characters to ask questions, particularly when they're people who are supposed to be cagey, like Sawyer. (Of course, if they'd been asking questions from the start, the show would have been over two seasons ago.)

I would be more suspicious and annoyed in the writers if he did figure it it all out, he's obviously not imself. He lost Juliet, his head isn't screwed on right, no one's head would be. So him not using his wits, is very logical considering what has just happened to him. H's not thinking about a 'big picture' he's thinking about Juliet, and just getting off the island. Maybe he found out she has a sister, wants to tell her, perhaps he'd like to meet his daughter. Death and death being around you, makes you see things in a different way.

Suliet convinced me. And even if it didn't convince you that they didn't love each other, she died, and that is going to take an effect on him. And it will clog his judgement. You honestly think someone who lost someone they love will keep emotions in check? If I lost someone I loved, I'd be upset. He has a right to be upset. He's a human.

I can buy him not being attentive. If he knew how to keep his feelings and his emotions in check would he have killed Cooper for taking everything from him? Or shot and killed Tom for kidnapping Walt? From what we have seen through Sawyer is he's a hothead who runs fully on emotion and his emotions do clog his judgement. So him reacting this way isn't a surprise, and it doesn't bother me. Sawyer has always let his emotions get the best of him.
