One of the major failings of this show, IMO, is writing believable romantic relationships from any angle. They dumb them down and make the characters involved in them act silly and adolescent, which in the situation they're in is highly impractical, stupid, and dangerous. (Hell, I'm half-surprised the Others haven't whacked them all by now, given how dumb relationships seem to make the Losties.)

That didn't even clock with me, but... oh, wow, I'll have to rewatch that part! That belongs in the 'unintentional hilarity' thread, I think.

Also, the fact that she told that mechanic, "I'm wanted for murder" and he was like, "Sure use my bathroom, just make it quick" and made no move to call the cops. I know they were trying to portrary him like he's this cool mechanic who probably had run-ins with the law as well so he sympathizes with her, but once again, I didn't buy it. My mechanic is super cool (I had to pick up my car the other day and he was like, 'Stay for a beer' hahaha) but he would definitely contact the authorities if I came in in cuffs and a gun and was like, 'I'm wanted for murder' lmao.

I did catch that, and that's part of an Idiot Plot (tm Roger Ebert)--a plotline (and sometimes a whole movie) which wouldn't move forward if, of course, the characters weren't behaving like absolute idiots. This is incredibly obvious, but: Having run-ins with the law because you're a ne'er-do-well mechanic who got busted for running a pot farm, say, isn't the same thing at all as murder! This also goes towards the dumbing-down thing that I mentioned before re. relationships; I think on some level Darlton are still adolescent boys in spirit, a la Joss Whedon, and so emphasize the 'cool' and sacrifice the realistic at times.

LOL filmchick, well said! You and I should be friends, lol.

I completely understand that if the characters weren't behaving like fools the plot wouldn't move forward--so many times in movies I'm asking myself, 'What the heck are they doing right now!?' but of course there wouldn't be a movie without it, haha. It just made me laugh how everything was magically working out for Kate when she's on the run in LA, lol.

Another thing I was thinking was, "Wouldn't there have been a radio warning to all of the street police to look out for that cab?" Yet she didn't seem to have a lot of trouble--she even had time to look for Claire! They should have had her ditch the cab and get another car--then I would have believed it haha.

Don't get me wrong, the Kate/Claire thing was very sweet, especially considering that they both helped raise Aaron for awhile, but I just couldn't buy it, lol.

YES.. THIS

I don't care how desperate you are for a ride... nobody would get into the cab with a stranger who not an hour ago hijacked your cab, pulled a gun and tossed you out... and then to protect her when the cops came looking for her... I don't think so...

Hello then, new friend!

And, oh, but as Kate leisurely walked through the airport, there were multiple closeups on security guards, with stinger chords for shock value! Isn't that exactly the same?! Granted, Kate's whole background is a perfect storm of implausibility at this point, so maybe the writers have just given up on her storyline. Not saying anything about the character, I can't say that I would blame them, considering what a mess that bit of plot is.

Yeah, whatever. I watch the show for the action and the mysteries and the fun, not for the believability or (at this point) the plot coherency, but sometimes some of the plotline strains at my suspension of disbelief! (Just wait until late spring and see how I feel, haha.) That's part of the reason why the last while felt like a drag, because they were trying to establish relationships and plot coherency, and didn't have a stable enough foundation in either of those backgrounds to justify their efforts.

(Man, I could write a thesis on this stuff. I wonder if anyone has!)

I think the Kate/claire thing was supposed to show how they have a connection, even tho they've never met in AU world. Because yeh I agree, why would you get in a car with a stranger who held a gun to your head and stole your purse and stuff? it doesnt make sense, so I took it to believe their showing that underneath, kate and claire trust each other and remember each other.

believe me; i cant believe im saying that cos the kate/claire bond is one my least favourite things of the show mainly because it didn't show up until season 4 and im supposed to think they were like sisters or smoething, but thats what i took the What Kate Does stuff between them to mean, otherwise like you all said, it's too unrealistic.

I agree. I think some of these characters are going to have a strange draw to one another. Like when Kate was in the taxi and she looks back and there's Jack staring at her. (I read somewhere that some of these characters would recognize each other).

The Kate/Claire bond is one of your least favorite things of the show? LOL I always thought you liked it, my bad.

Lol; definitely not ;P Kate having Aaron/the bond are two of my least favourite things mainly because there is no history to it. kate and claire had only a handful of scenes in the first three seasons and claire was very much closer to Sun. so thrusting them together in the final seasons has annoyed me because it just makes claire a prop to kate's story rather than giving claire her own storyline which she deserves. Its like we'll only see Claire when its relevant to Kate; and that annoys me.

but yeh, i read characters would recognize each other too; which i think is the reason for all the lingering looks between people on the plane and stuff. like the Jate meeting on the plane ;P

Kate taking Aaron didn't bother me, but I can see where you are coming from with Claire just being a prop to Kate's story. I think more is going to come of Claire this season, which is nice. I want there to be an acknowledgement of Jack/Claire.

I loved the Jate scene on the plane. But I laughed when she stole his pen, it reminded me of when she stole the phone in season 4.

Hahaha, that would be so awesome! What sort of title would it have?

I tried to think of something clever to no avail, and in the course of doing so I stumbled across this:

http://www.bc.edu/schools/cas/communication/special/honors/honorgrads.html

It's this archive of theses all about television--there's one on Grey's Anatomy, lol. So it's completely possible that someone actually did!

And Kat, you made a good point; I had never thought of it that way before!

Also, I just had a thought...

So if one of the theories is that in the AU Kate committed a different crime/is innocent, that's hard to believe--because the writer's disproved two of the previous theories that people were thinking of, like Locke would be able to walk and Claire wouldn't be pregnant. So it's a chance that this Kate theory is just another theory that won't play out.

OR

They purposefully psyched us out to think that everything is mostly the exactly same, and then BAM! They're going to try to mess with us by writing that Kate IS innocent in the AU.

If any of that made sense, my vote is definitely with option two, lol.

Oh, I'm sure someone did. I knew a graduate student in college who was writing his thesis on making his own role-playing game--statistics and probability and what have you. And I've shown Monty Python's Flying Circus in class for an A. So I know from experience that students will do anything to have fun with the idea. Of course, I'm almost seven years past college now, and I don't think I'd go back just for that!

LOL. I loved that scene. Both of them.

But I was watching it, and I saw Jack looking for his pen, and then you see her using the pen. I was like "Figures".
