Hey all

So I'm getting a laptop for my birthday this year (yay!) which means I can finally rip off all my DVDS and many boxsets, but I'm a bit of a newbie in this and was just wondering one thing. It might sound like a stupid question but what is the difference between hard drive memory and just memory? All the memory my clips/data etc take up, is that going to come off my hard drive memory or not?

thanks if anybody could help!

As far as I know; they're the same thing. Hard drive memory is memory that is on your hard drive, but you can also have memory on external harddrives (which I would highly recommend getting if you're ripping DVDs, i have 2 for all my TV shows and movies, keeps your computer running smoother to have the actual hard drive unclogged). I'd also suggest making sure you have a lot of RAM, 1-2 GB, altho most laptops come with good RAM to start with these days. It's basically the speed at which your computer works, the more RAM, the faster it is, especially when it comes to games and videos; anything requiring graphics.

ok, thank you for answering as I don't want to buy the wrong kinda laptop for what I want to do and it just can't put up with sony vegas and ripping!

well there's two choices of laptops I wanna get,
one has
250GB - hard drive memory
4GB RAM

and the other has
160GB - hard drive memory
160GB RAM

which one would you suggest getting? cause if you recommend memory on external harddrives, I probably will get that as I want everything to run smooth!

thanks, I appreciate your help

erm 160gb RAM is impossible Usually if the hard drive size is smaller means it generally has less oomph. 4gb is plenty enough for video editing and gaming

lol, 160 GB would be like blinking your videos into existance, lol you can't get higher than 4 or 5 I don't think; but that's all you'd need. i Have 2 Gb and it works fine; but if you can get one that comes with 4 GB then I'd get that one

but id def. go with the one with 250GB harddrive.

I've heard as high as 8GB of RAM on the really top-end gaming machines.

My two cents would be, if the RAM is equal, then definitely go with the larger hard drive size.

I'm totally looking forward to the days of 160GB of RAM, then! How awesome would that be?

Lol, I meant to write 3GB of RAM not 160GB, my mistake
I can totally see how that would be impossible, but blinking your videos into existance sounds kinda awesome

thanks for your help guys!
