Background/History:
| Quote: | Michael is Lucas' identical twin brother. Like his brother and father, he was present when the rebels tortured and killed his mother in Somalia, but was not kidnapped and used as a bargaining chip like his brother. Instead, Michael was instructed by his father to hide whilst Taylor saved Lucas, so therefore he does not share the same intense hatred for him that his brother feels.
While the two were growing up, they shared a close and loving relationship. One of Michael's fond memories is that of Lucas climbing up a tree in the countryside and then falling out and crying childishly in to Ayani's arms. When they were eighteen (nearly nineteen), they followed their father to Terra Nova where Lucas began his long ploy for revenge. At the colony, Michael begins work on the security team as a Corporal with his father and meets Lieutenant Washington, who he quickly falls in love with and eventually starts a secret affair with.
Shortly after the boys turn 21, Michael and Lucas drift apart as Lucas' hard work in the lab alienates him from his family. Michael discovers Lucas' plans to make the portal go both ways and decides to tell Commander Taylor who destroys Lucas' work. As a result, Lucas disowns both of them.
A couple of days later, Michael and Commander Taylor follow Lucas into the jungle where Lucas has brought General Phillbrick through the portal to dismiss Commander Taylor. In a sudden struggle, Michael saves his father by attacking Phillbrick and accidentally killing him. Lucas then turns the gun on his father but Taylor disarms him and tells him to leave and never come back. The boys say goodbye and Lucas tells Michael he wished things had happened differently.
In Lucas' absence, life at Terra Nova settles back to normal. On a trip to find the portal for the 3rd pilgrimage, Michael and Wash are attacked by a Nykoraptor. Michael manages to save Wash but blacks out from his injuries. When he wakes up, his wounds have been bandaged up and Michael suspects Lucas helped him, saving his life. After a confrontation with Taylor, Wash breaks up with Michael and breaks his heart. The two have had an on/off relationship ever since.
Later, Michael escorts the 5th Pilgrimage to the colony and meets a young Skye Tate, whom he forms a bond with. She takes a shine to Michael and develops a crush on him. When Syncillic Fever breaks out in the colony, Wash falls ill and Michael is forced to make a deal with Mira who agrees to give him medicine in exchange for a favour which she will ask in the future. To Michael's relief, Wash makes a full recovery.
After her father dies from Syncillic Fever and her mother is taken by the Sixers, Skye stays with the Taylors for a while until she gets her own place. She and Michael become close. On a walk OTG, Skye kisses Michael and he tells her that he is in love with Alicia Washington. Skye promises not to tell Commander Taylor about he and the Lieutenant's affair.
As Skye's rebellious influence affects Michael's behaviour, he begins to act out and feels the full force of his father's rage. We later discover the reason for Michael's attitude is due to his meetings with Mira who is forcing him to steal a special box from her house. When he refuses to help her, she reveals that she has Skye's mother and threatens to let her die if he doesn't get her the box. Michael is hesitant but agrees.
Michael and Wash share an unexpected kiss on the eleventh anniversary of Ayani's death. At this time, Skye is also moving out of the Taylor residence and in to her own house with some friends. Michael reveals that he wants to do something different this year to remember his mother so, instead of spending the day with his father as he usually does, he and Skye go OTG one last time. Michael tells Skye about his memory of Lucas and the tree, and they talk about how much they miss their parents. When the two return home, his father is furious that he wasn't there for their annual get-together and then reveals that Wash has told him all about their affair. Michael agrees with his father when he says they should move on and forget about it. However, a devastated Michael confronts Wash who admits they can never be together due to her loyalty to Taylor.
On the arrival of the tenth pilgrimage, Michael is assigned Sixer babysitting duty in the infirmary. He makes a deal with Carter, the injured Sixer, allowing Michael more time to get the box in exchange for his freedom. However, he is tricked and Carter makes an attempt on Taylor's life. Jim Shannon saves him and Michael feels an instant dislike towards him due to the privileged way his father treats him. Whilst Michael is getting his wounds sewn up, Wash visits him and Michael reassures her that the two of them are okay. Later, after Skye and her friends are saved from a slasher attack, Michael reveals that he hasn't given up on Wash. Whilst everyone recovers from the events of the day, Michael sees his opportunity to steal the box, but as he leaves, Mark catches him.
After hours of questioning, Michael is released and the box is locked up in Malcolm's lab for safe-keeping. In a conversation with Boylan, Michael mentions that he believes Taylor suspects him to be the spy. Boylan reveals he once had a son. Guzman interrupts and takes Michael to a very confused Taylor who has a knife to Reynold's throat, having lost his memory due to the infection at Outpost 3. When Michael tries to convince Taylor that he's his son, Taylor refuses to believe it and attacks him.
Not long later, Michael wakes up to find Wash is missing. Mira and the Sixers arrive at the colony with her, demanding an exchange; Lieutenant Washington for the box. With no other choice, Michael makes the exchange. A week later, Michael angrily confronts Mira about the abduction and discovers she has a daughter back in 2149. Vowing revenge, Michael leaves but is involved in an accident when a meteorite hits the earth.
Skye saves him from the wreckage and whilst they wait for rescue, she admits that she is the Sixer spy. Michael is in a bad way and Skye is forced to run and find help. By the time Michael is returned to Terra Nova, he is unconscious.
At Terra Nova, Doctor Shannon runs some tests and affirms that they will have to wait and see how Michael progresses. Boylan convinces Wash how important it is that she be there for Michael when he wakes up. As soon as he does, Commander Taylor arrives and informs him that they need to discuss his involvement with the Sixers.
A week later, Michael is doing exercises to overcome his injuries. It is revealed that he now suffers from headaches. Michael then attends his interview with the Commander, and he divulges his involvement with the Sixers, however, Boylan claims his meetings with the Sixers were only due to Michael helping him with various deals. Taylor is unconvinced and Michael admits he agreed to get the box as a favour to Mira for saving Wash's life. He neglects to mention Skye in order to protect her. Taylor, believing Michael knows who the spy is, sends him to Pod Zero for the night.
Later, Wash convinces Taylor to go easy on Michael. During another interrogation with Taylor, he and Michael realise Lucas and the Sixers are collaborating together. Afterwards, Michael is free to go. Washington discovers that Michael saved her life and they get back together.
The next day, Michael finds out that Boylan told Jim Shannon about General Phillbrick's body. Jim is determined to prove his guilt. The two get into a fight and have to be pulled apart. Taylor is forced to tell Jim everything about the circumstances of the General's death and the truth about what happened to Lucas.
After the harvest, the colony is on lockdown and Michael says goodbye to his father as he leaves the colony. He later finds out that Jim has a blood sample from the spy and so he deceives the colony once again by destroying it in order to cover for Skye. After, he, Skye and the Commander visit Memorial Field together to pay their respects.
Taylor sends Michael on a mission to find the Sixer camp and see what he can find out about Lucas and the spy. However, he is angry once again when he discovers about the rekindled relationship between Michael and Wash. Michael's headaches have been getting worse, and he easily loses his temper. Regardless, he goes on the mission but Skye follows him and reveals Lucas' plans.
At the Sixer camp, Michael finds Lucas and confronts him about his plans. He begins to sense a relationship between his brother and Skye. Michael fails to stop Lucas going back through the portal to 2149. The truth is finally revealed.
On his return, Michael is attacked by Terra Novan soldiers who have discovered his dealings with the Sixers. He and the colony prepare for war.
Before the battle, Boylan gives Michael an old coin that used to belong to his son, for good luck. Michael witnesses Guzman's death and the colony is forced to surrender.
In a reunion with his brother, Lucas makes sure Michael stays close to him throughout the occupation. He witnesses Lucas' true self and the brutality of his army. Later, Michael is allowed to visit Skye, her mother as well as Tasha and he reveals the bad news about her father.
The next day Michael is assigned to dinner duty and gets in trouble with a couple of the Phoenix Group soldiers when he tries to defend Maddy Shannon. He is taken to Lucas who comes up with a plan to draw their father out.
The following day, Michael joins Lucas, Weaver and Mira as they collect the remaining Meteoric iron from the Sixer Quarry. The Commander never shows. A day later, Lucas allows Michael a day off and he seeks out Lieutenant Washington. Michael apologises for lying to her and the two reconcile.
Jim Shannon is awake and Michael sneaks him aboard one of the Phoenix Group transports in order for him to meet with his father. At the valley, Lucas and Weaver's plans to mine the place are revealed, and Weaver and Michael get into a fight. Later when Doctor Shannon is tending to Michael's wounds, she gives him the task of planting trackers on Mira, Weaver and Lucas.
Michael plants the tracker on Mira and seeks Skye's help to plant one on Lucas as he comes to realise his brother his affectionate towards her. Phoenix Group soldiers keep getting attacked OTG and after a fight with the two Shannons, Lucas realises it is Jim who is behind it.
