I like that idea too! Sometimes lyrics work really well, but hip hop/rap tends to be hard to vid, so that makes it ever better! It makes everyone think and be a lot more creative. _________________

Well, I don't care for it either, but it's still definitely a good idea if you want a creative contest, especially since there aren't that many vids out there to hip hop/R&B/rap. I often feel like we're just doing the same contests over and over, with minor differences, while other creative ideas go un-tested. I think we should try something really different. _________________

Yeah, I mean it's a cool idea Just saying that I'm not a fan of the type of music I highly detest it
With something like this contest though, it opens up to do contests on like instrumentals and other genres |

well that's a bit harsh allie :P we try to be creative and always take into account the ideas in this thread. But there are factors like judge ability and hinder specific contests. I do like the idea tho, even tho like you Charlee i dont like the music. I've been working on a vid to an Eminem song for awhile _________________

I get what you're talking about, Rosie! We've been talking this over since you mentioned it (we always read all the ideas put forth here and we talk them over to see if we can shape them into a do-able contest ). We're not sure whether it can be done as a monthly contest because it doesn't meet some of our criteria.
For us to judge as fairly as possible, we need contests that level the playing field for the entries and stack them up against each other, to try to give us the end result of who did the contest criteria the best. In your example, the vids would be more pitted against the original vidder's vid as to who did the idea better. We'd also need to take into consideration the fact that some vidders really might not want their vids remade by somebody else.
So there are some logistical issues for us to figure out as well, since if we make it an official (or even non-official ) LVI contest, then we're responsible for any hurt feelings or upset that might come from that.
Like I said, a major concern on this idea is on not putting a vidder in a spot to where they have their vid remade when they really would rather not, even as a tribute. Some people would definitely love that they inspired another vidder like that but some would feel like they were being ripped-off, not being paid tribute. And both are valid ways for somebody to feel and that's something that, if LVI is involved in it, even as a non-official contest, then we have to respect the feelings of both of them. I hope that makes sense!
Yael, about your hip-hop idea... We usually don't restrict a type of music (unless it's an artist-specific contest, which we don't tend to do very often ), so like in the beat use contest that just went around, somebody could've used a hip-hop/rap song to really great use, in my opinion, but unfortunately, nobody did.
We end up with 12 contests in a year, though we typically have one or two months dedicated to the season recap and several months dedicated to holiday-themed contests. So when all is said and done, we usually have about 6 - 7 "open" months beyond that. That gives us 6 - 7 chances to do the most wide-reaching ideas that we can come up with, which will give the maximum number of vidders the chance to participate, that has something to do with the show as much as possible, and that will be hopefully fun! Do we miss the mark? Sure. As hard as we try, we can't always know what you guys will think is a fun idea that will be something that will meet the criteria we need to do our judging.
There will always be people who want a certain type of music contest and those who loathe the idea. We just have to try and find a way to come up with a contest that will appeal to the maximum number of people because we only have a few shots to try and do it right.
So if we don't end up doing any of your specific ideas, please don't feel like we're ignoring you guys or that we don't like the ideas you come up with. We definitely want you to keep letting us know your ideas! We just hope you understand if we're not able to do them or to not do them in the way you want. We really do try hard to accommodate everybody but if you've ever dealt with a crowd of people before, you'll soon learn that there's unfortunately no way to please everybody.

In some ways, you're correct. The contests follow a formula because they have to. Like I just mentioned, the Council has come up with ways to judge the contests as fairly and impartially as possible. We do our best to never judge a contest on whether we "like" a vid or not, for example. So there has to be something concrete for us to base our judgments on: which vid did the best, most creative job with beat use? Which vid did the best recap of the season? That sort of thing. So there does end up being a "formula" to the contest because the formula is what helps keep things fair.
Anyway, I'm sorry that you feel we're doing a bad job coming up with fresh, new contest ideas. Basically all I can tell you is that we really do the best we can with the restrictions we have and the restrictions are definitely there for a reason. Unfortunately, that means that somethings won't make sense if you haven't been down in the trenches where we are.
So most certainly do keep giving us ideas and we'll do our best to work them into an idea we're able to do. Just please do give us the benefit of the doubt that we're doing the best we can to keep things fair and interesting and fun for everybody. |

Kat and Ais, I TOTALLY didn't mean that you're doing a bad job, I'm sorry if I came off that way! I just meant to say that, like you said Ais, the contests follow the same general formula, and it'd be cool to step outside of the box and do something WAAY different one day. Not everytime, but just every once in a while. Like January is always a recap, Feb is a shippery one, March is a theme, April tends to be funny... it's all little differences added to each contest, and I thought it would be cool to step way out of the box and do something that we never ever had before. I'm sorry if I said it in a harsh way, but I didn't realize that I was. I was just being honest and I was just sticking up for Yael's idea cuz I thought it was new and interesting. You've had 80's contests, or Sarah Mclachlan contests, and that's basically the same to restricting a genre... but of course it's your choice. I wasn't trying to voice my upset with you or anything, cuz I'm not, I was just pointing something out and voicing my opinion, but I'm sorry if I caused any issues. :S _________________

Those types of contests have always gone well with those particular months. Every year there's a whole new season to work with for those particular themes, and I think it's fun for those themes to have a different twist each year.
Yael's idea is a good one, though I'm with Kat & Charlee and don't like that kind of music. However, you say it's "out of the box" and new and interesting, but then you say it's the same as the 80s & specific artist contests. Can't be both new & the same! _________________ Heather |

It's similar in the general sense, as far as the 80's contest allows only 80's songs, and the hip hop contest would allow only hip hop/r&b songs, so you've used similar restrictions and things like that before. But it's totally different and "out of the box" as far as subject matter, cuz I haven't ever seen a hip hop/r&b contest on here. I only meant it was the same as far as restrictions applied. Plus, even though I don't care for most of the music in the genre, I think it's a great idea, because it would force people to use creative editing and lyric interpretation, simply because of the genre. _________________

Yeah, it's different but it's similar to the 80's one in many ways, but couldn't you go so far to say the same thing about any genre we've never had a contest on such as 'classical music'.
It is a good idea, don't get me wrong just saying I wasn't a fan of the music |

Whoa! Didn't mean to cause a commotion, but I am happy to read that despite disputes everyone thinks my idea is AWESOME because it is! lol
I just have to say that as far as future contests go, I personally would also like to see things shaken up a bit. Like let's not to another Horror contest in October or warped ship contest in February. What about a Black History month contest instead!? Yeah! *raises fist in the air*
PS: Why not a classical music contest?! What about country? Let's have some fun! We know that a lot of newbies are afraid to posts vids on here sometimes because they are afraid people won't like the strange music they chose. But I know we always assure them that that is not the case and that videos are judge on technique, story telling, and beat use because we are LVI and we are made of awesome. |

lol yael,
Yeah that could be a possibly cool comp for a black history month, or maybe other significant events which we could incorportate into contests, but like it's been mentioned on here we have to also add more to the comp for the judging to work out fairly
Yeah, I quite like the idea of country music, as I'm a fan of the genre my self |

I think this just kinda turned into a bigger issue than it is! Everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion, and with so many creative people around, all those opinions are gonna be different!
