So, PsychoCynic, now you see that evil will always triumph over good. Because good is dumb.

(Heck, minus a few characters, that could possibly be a Lost motto! )

LOL Filmchick!! Spaceballs, FTW!!!

Quote:
It's really annoying that the writers keep making Kate go after Sawyer when it's completely not believable that she would actually be trying to get with him right after he buried the woman he loved and he was gonna ask to marry him. Kate was such a great character in the first season but the writers have really made her winey and annoying since then. I really hope they give her character something else to do this season other than going after Jack and Sawyer. I think Sawyer said it best in this episode "Maybe we're all just meant to be alone"

I agree with this as well. I don't hate on the triangle because it's not important to the characters - obviously, Kate/Sawyer/Jack are all who they are because of what happened to them & they've all had some kind of effect on the others in some way or another. I don't dispute that.

As far as the plot however, the triangle is a moot point. It's a subplot, but not a very important one. The stuff with the temple is a subplot too, but that's driving the story forward. The triangle does no such thing but create unnecessary tension between the characters and the time the writers spend on it could be better spent answering some question or moving the plot forward.

I know I'm hard on Kate a lot, but the reason is thus - she is a character who is defined not by who she is, but by the men in her life. I know this is a bit feminist of me, but it really peeves me when every single show on television has some female character who is constantly seeking and/or depending on the attention of her male counterparts - and personally, I find that as rather weak, especially in this day and age.

I don't think it's weak to want companionship - wanting companionship & sex is just part of human nature. But when you can't be a whole person without that companionship, when you can't function without some kind of relationship - that's when it's weak. Kate seemed to be okay during her Season 1 flashbacks - when she was on the run, she didn't need anyone else (especially not a man) and I think she was pretty well defined & her own person.

But the minute she got to that island, she latched onto Jack, and Sawyer later on, and it's like she's created this little co-dependent world for herself, where she cannot exist without the attention of Jack and/or Sawyer. She thrives on their attention, she thrives on the fact that they need her and the minute they don't need her, she's going to be very, very lost.....and I think she's starting to realize that.....

Playing devil's advocate here, but couldn't you say that every major character on the show can be characterized through their relationships negatively?

FSM above knows that I don't give a tin cent about the triangle and am not a Kate fan, but I don't think the guys have fared any better on the show in many instances. A lot of times, relationships on a show can (no pun intended) neuter characters significantly, because then every episode has to include something of the relationship in it, whether or not it's pertinent. Real life doesn't work that way, and I think that's why there's a disconnect between 'If I was on Mystery Frickin' Island, I would have bigger concerns than who's sleeping with whom' and the writers' mantra of Must include Skate/Jate/Grate (there must be a Kate-somebody ship named this!) scenes to fulfill the weekly quota.

And ships of any variety and sexuality tend to pose the characters in terms of the relationship, not in terms of their own characterizations. I think that's the nature of the beast (and its Babylonian accompaniment, haha.) I'm just not sure where it crosses the line from your phrasing of 'Character X is this way because of Ship Y,' which is OK and 'Oh my God, Character X can't do anything but be in Ship Y,' which is useless. I think it's a question of balance, but I'm not sure what unbalances it.

(I need more caffeine. Come to me, tea, delicious and invigorating...)

I think at this point, Kate might end up alone....she is showing absolutely no interest in Jack and is hopelessly chasing after Sawyer. I can't believe she thought he'd help her look for Claire when he OBVIOUSLY doesn't care about anything at the moment.

Broke my heart when Sawyer said, "Of course he's alive. He's a torturer. Why shouldn't he get a second chance?" I was pissed at first but then I realized he was just mad because Juliet didn't get a second chance....

English-speaking-Jin OWNS. I LOVE him. We really didn't get to see much of him talking to and questioning other characters before this episode, so this was very awesome!

Loved the Claire scenes, and I thought Emilie did really well!! Poor her in the first scene when Kate hijacked the cab and took all her stuff. Glad Kate gave it back. That whale stuffed animal in Claire's bag....wasn't Aaron holding one just like it in a flashforward in season 4? Or maybe it was five...can't remember what episode that was.

EEP! ETHAN! I thought we were shut of you once and for all but noooo, you returneth. From beyonnnnddd the gravvvveeeee.....actually that'd be Sayid.

On the topic of Sayid, I hate torture scenes. I hate torture scenes. I hate torture scenes. But hehehe.....Sayid reminded me of Han Solo in the second (or fifth) Star Wars when he got tortured and was all "They didn't even ask me any questions!" (/nerd moment)

I want Claire to get un-infected! I hope she recognizes Jin...you never know, it's been awhile and she looks kinda crazy... Poor Claire.

I don't think she's chasing after Sawyer. I think she feels awful for Sawyer and just needs his help to find Claire. Right now I think Claire is the only person she's interested in helping because I think on some level there is a great amount of guilt from taking Aaron away from her mother.

I think for the first time since season 1, Kate is actually has a purpose that doesn't depend on Jack or Sawyer. She just needed Sawyer's help, most likely because he was the one who saw her last.

I was more annoyed with Sawyer who said he didn't care about any of them. I understand he's upset, but still I felt bad for them. I wish Sawyer would realize that everyone on that island has pain just like he does. Sayid was tracking down the woman he loved, FINALLY finds her and she's murdered. I just think they are all oblivious to each other's pains.

I'm so done with Lost if Sayid dies.

But then again, I said that about Charlie too.

I agree on your perpective of Kate's motives. I don't think she's trying to get back with Sawyer; she cares about him, of course, and Jack too (maybe more than Sawyer), but currently she has a one-track mind set on finding Claire to relieve herself of the guilt of taking Aaron. And, for once, this has nothing to do with Sawyer or Jack. She may need their help along the way, and she trusts them to help her, but that's it.

As for Sawyer saying he doesn't care about anyone any more, I think he will eventually get over that once he feels like he has repented for Juliet's death because currently he believes her death was his fault. He's just going through a lot of self-loathing right now.

I agree about Kate. She actually has a purpose that doesn't involve either one of them, only Claire. Thats' what I meant to say, I agree. She has guilt for taking Aaron, the guilt didn't fully surface until the whole issue with Claire's mom came up. Still, I don't believe she was bad. I think she did what she thought was right. What was she really supposed to do, leave Aaron? She was better than that.

I think he'll get out of it, I was just a bit disappointed.

I am proud of her for going on this mission to find Claire, I think it shows the real strength that we haven't truly seen since season 1.

Overall, Kate did do the right thing. No one in their right mind would leave a baby, lol.
I agree, she is showing more independence than any season since season 1. I can't wait to see what happens when Kate finds the "claimed" Claire

this week's episode definitely had its moments... had other parts that dragged though

I wanted to punch on-island Kate in the face... punch.her.in.the.face.... she seriously needs to leave Sawyer the frick alone... Juliet just died... he wants to be alone... he does not want her following him around the island, trying to talk to him and trying to get him to come with her on her missions... leave.him.alone... he clearly does not want to talk to you... want to go find Claire, go right ahead... but Sawyer is clearly in no place to be up to running around the jungle with you... wanting to find Claire is the first semi-decent thing I've seen Kate want in a while... but go by herself, stay with Jin and they could have looked for Sun and Claire together... I see no reason for her to be following Sawyer around when clearly that is the last thing he wants

but my poor Sawyer... when Sayid came back to life and he said, that he's a torturer who shoots kids, of course he got a second chance... I wanted to huggle my poor, bitter, heartbroken Sawyer... and then went back to his house with Juliet... and back to the docks... and he was going to ask her to marry him but totally loving how he wants nothing to do with Kate

parallel universe Lost continues to be super trippy.... Claire starting to go into labor while with Kate again... the whale in her bag just like the one Aaron had in the flashforwards... Ethan as her doctor (and Doctor Goodspeed?!)... but WTF kind of person decides not to adopt a baby and then not tell the girl who's flying in from AUSTRALIA...

the Jack/Sayid temple stuff... meh... we already learned from Locke that coming back from the dead does not mean good things... nothing too shocking here

Jin is off to look for Sun!!! and he found crazy!Rousseau'd Claire!!

i kind of almost see sawyer not wanting to be around kate as a small sign hes not over her since hes already feeling guilty about juliets death he doesnt want to add more guilt for realizing he still has feelings for kate as well maybe..

Well, he asked Jules to stay on the island because he didn't want to be alone after Kate left, and Juliet called him on it (or at least his feelings for her) before he died, so I think it's pretty safe to say that whatever he feels for Kate is triggering a whole lot of guilt to pile on top of the grief and self-loathing. Hopefully altverse Sawyer will be doling out the nicknames and snark, because I don't think I can handle an entire season of serious-Sawyer.

my theory on that, its not so much that he has feelings for Kate now... but Juliet jumped on Team "Let's Drop a Bomb" after she saw him look at Kate... and even if he didn't admit that to Kate, that's a big part of why he feels guilty over Juliet's death...
