Ok; this happened yesterday and I'm pissed :S
I knocked over my external harddrive, its 1TB so its solid and just sit on my desk, but it fell. and now when it wants me to format the disk before I use it; but doing so will erase over 700GB worth of data on there. Is there a way for me to sort this out myself? I have a data recovery guy but I can't see him til Monday cos its the weekend here plus it will cost. Does anyone have any advice for the best thing to do? _________________

I did some googling... I'm not sure if I got the exact right info cuz I'm not sure exactly what the problem is, but this is what someone said -

1- DON'T format the drive ...
2- WATCHES this Web (www.cgsecurity.org)

I went through the thread and everyone seemed to say run a program called TestDisk. I would research it a bit first, but apparently these people's external hard drives were saying they needed to be reformatted and they couldn't access any of their files so they ran this program and it recovered them. But some of them had this problem because they plugged their externals into a different kind of computer, not because they dropped the thing, but it's worth checking into.

Oh, that sucks SO MUCH, Kat!
Just having a look around Google, I found this. It tells you to get a disc recovery program but maybe this other response might be worth a try:

Ooh, that sounds like a good idea too. I really really hope someone can help you, Kat! I've heard data recovery is really expensive, so if you could fix it yourself, it'd be amazing. Hopefully one of these ways work! _________________

I'm sorry Kat, I've been feeling really bad for you since yesterday when I read in spam. I asked Kemper b/c he's petty knowledgeable and he said it sounds like you broke it and you will probably have to pay someone to get all your stuff off of there How awful though! So is all of your Lost episodes and vids and stuff on that drive too? _________________

ALLIE!!! Get over here so I can kiss you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That program worked/is working!!!! I can get to my files and copy them!!!! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! Thank you SOOOOOOO much!!!! You've literally saved my HOURS of re-ripping all my shows (We're talking Lost, Supernatural, the office, charmed, 24, big bang, modern family, all my shows!!! And ALL my movies!!! It would have taken forever to get them back; and I didn't think I'd have the patience to do it!!
Plus, I know you've saved me money, cos last time i needed data it would have cost $1500 just for the process; and there was no guarentee it would work so i just ditched that one; I was dreading what it would cost for this cos just getting them to look at it is 100 bucks.

I shouldn't get too excited to soon... so far I've only copied gossip girl and that took about 5 hours cos there are so many, so it'll take a few more days to copy everything, but at least its not completely wiped:) _________________

yay!! I'm so happy for you Kat, b/c Kemper said it would probably cost like 2,000 for the data recovery but I didn't want to tell you that part. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you get everything back!! _________________
I've had some issues with my external like that, but I think mine is just weird LOL. Usually if I just unplug it and plug it back in it works like a charm *though that's when I use it on my laptop*.
I'm glad that software is working, I know I wouldn't have the patience to re-rip all that stuff. I'm still working on re-building my show/movie directory from when my computer crashed last year, and I'm slowly losing my mind LOL! _________________

OMG just seen the thread, thank goodness you've managed to get some stuff moved over because I had the same problem a few months back I had knocked mine over and I had my dad take it to his mate and said that it was broke I forgot what he said but something happens when you knock it

YAY!! I'm so glad that it's working! That site said that it might recover just some of them, but I hope that you can get most of them at least!! Yay! I'm so happy that I could help, cuz 1500 to recover some files is INSANE and it would have taken so long to get them all back! Keep me posted on how it's going!! And you don't have to make me anything! haha I just did some googling, but I'm so so glad that what I found was useful, cuz omg, I've been there, Kat, and it's so horrible to lose files! _________________
