Well, after many hours of frustrating work, I've managed to get a brand new, fresh, very latest install of phpBB up and running. The hard part turned out to be moving all of our old data from the corrupt forum to this new one.
One reason for the difficulty was that almost 1/2 of the database was filled with SPAM. And because of the structure of the database, it was
impossible to do a backup excluding certain forums. Fortunatly, I found another (much more complecated) way to get most of the data back in there.
So, I'm also impossing the executive decision that the spam forum will be auto-pruned so threads not posted to after a week will be deleted. Sorry spammers.
Anyway, please try stuff out and report anything that seems off in this thread... but I think everything should be solid now.
oh, and I even made a new header logo for the new forum. _________________

I am Spammer #2 and call me that.
I'm glad the site is back. I could care less about the spam, I just want everything else. |

Is someone going to tell the whole story of the Hacker, or should I try and blunder my way through it? I could use sockpuppets.
Well, until then, anyone new here who didn't get the email we tried to send out to every whose email we had, the old forums were hacked into by someone both malicious and trying to redirect the forum's traffic. We conacted Enchirito (our very-capable webmaster) to figure out what was going on (as all we sawwere some error messages) and within minutes, the forums were in a safety lock-down as he tried to erradicate the virus. Yes, it was a virus, so if you were here when the error messages were displayed, then I suggest you run your antivirus/spyware removal programs to make sure it didn't infect you (it's most likely found with the spyware one). Anyway, E continued the ongoing battle, with a little help from our web hosts, and succeeded in bringing back the forums.
But meanwhile, we've probably lost many of our members temporarilly before everyone realizes the site's back up. We'll do everythign we can to get the word out that we're back, but it would be really helpful if some of you could go out and spread the word too.
Now... to explain it with puppets:

Oh btw, thanks a lot Movieguy you made three of us look like idiots. That may be what we get for just glancing at the thing before passing it on, and assuming it was the hacker claiming credit through a joke. Yeah, thanks a lot lol |

Warren did a good job with the cliff notes version of the attack but if anyone is interested I can give the full, well not full because it's an entire weekend worth of headaches, but I can give a full run down of all the highlights. But first I must find something to eliminate the headache I have after my first day back to classes. _________________

Well done on getting it back so quick..again Sorry to hear you guys had to go through so much grief. I hate hackers I doubt they had any real problem with the site probably just seeing how much a mess of things they could make. _________________

maybe the post counts change according to how many undeleted posts on the site...? (so with the spam forum partially deleted, people's post counts changed.) |

I think that's it. When spam posts are pruned, I bet your post count is decremented. _________________

I think it's too many hits to the databases, probably due to too many clicks on the LVI Button I talked to iPowerweb in E's place, and they got it back up. No hack or anything though, just an overload.... Next time this happens we know what to do at least. E's gonna try and change things around so the server doesn't get overloaded again though.
Sorry it was down so long. |

sorry for the recent downtime guys. it was due to a combination of LVI being really popular and our server being really limiting on database hits.
Our friend the Execute Button wasn't helping the matter...
So, i've moved him to his own page now which should help quite a bit.
Cheers
