An interesting article from the NY Post:
April 30, 2005 -- LESS than 48 hours after Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' publicists sought to convince the world that the unlikely pair have embarked on a hot romance, CNN's Bill Hemmer said on "American Morning": "What kind of sham is this, by the way?"
Snark, on CNN? But it raises the question: What if they concocted a publicity stunt and nobody bought it?
CBS's "Early Show" also treated the news like a joke, running an interview with Kermit the Frog about whether he had ever dated Holmes, which sounded about as plausible as Cruise doing so.
London's Daily Mail wrote, "When it comes to the timing of his romances, Tom Cruise just seems to get luckier and luckier ... cynics will point out that the star has timed things to perfection for raising his profile."
Here's why nobody in the press or public believes the alleged affair between Cruise, 42, and Holmes, 26, is real, no matter how many glossy magazines do cover stories hyping the notion in the coming weeks:
* Romances between stars (and Cruise is one of the most notoriously private) always develop in secret, according to a tight script: The pair sneak around for a while dodging photographers while their publicists deny everything and insist they never comment on stars' personal lives anyway.
But Cruise and Holmes' alleged relationship began when his publicist-sister, Lee Anne DeVette, announced to the world that they were dating - the same night the two of them paraded before photographers in Rome holding hands. The following night, they again put on a show for the paparazzi, this time making sure they were pictured kissing. "People have trouble figuring out why they would choose to go public so soon," says Dan Jewel, senior news editor at the celeb mag Life & Style Weekly.
* Cruise needs publicity because he's no longer king of the box office. His Steven Spielberg movie "War of the Worlds," coming June 29, will be considered a disappointment if it does less than $150 million. But his last three movies - "Minority Report," "The Last Samurai" and "Collateral" - earned only $132 million, $111 million and $100 million, respectively, in North America. The numbers are way off compared to what he used to score in the '90s.
Matt Damon and Vin Diesel's last three big movies have beaten Cruise's, and even Diesel's awful comedy "The Pacifier" did better than the Oscar-nominated "Collateral." Cruise doesn't even want to think about Orlando Bloom, who has already starred in five huge movies, the least successful of which, "Troy," earned $133 million. His latest costume epic, "Kingdom of Heaven," which is getting good advance word, opens Friday.
* Holmes needs ink because she still isn't a movie star. Since breaking out on "Dawson's Creek," she has top-lined four movies, all of which have tanked ("First Daughter," "Pieces of April," "Abandon," "Teaching Mrs. Tingle"). Now 26, she has a supporting role as Bruce Wayne's girlfriend in "Batman Begins," due June 15.
* Holmes just ended a five-year romance with Chris Klein in March. Yet Cruise's sister-publicist says Cruise and Holmes have already been dating "a few weeks."
* Cruise has done it before. When he began to push yet another box-office disappointment, 2001's "Vanilla Sky," he announced he was dating his co-star Penelope Cruz. (Few bought that one either.) And he famously began dating Nicole Kidman on the set of "Days of Thunder."
* Cruise can't get the double-publicity value of dating his leading lady again: In "War of the Worlds," it's 11-year-old Dakota Fanning. Maybe someone will buy the magazines celebrating this week's affair of the decade, but as Hemmer put it on CNN yesterday, "You are gullible, America."

The age thing doesn't really matter to me. l mean look at Naveen Andrews....he's with Barbra Hurshy and she's what...15 years older then him. Or Tim Robbins and Susan Surandan....lol. l think they're all great couples and good luck to Katie and Tom. _________________

Crazy crazy crazy.
Tom Cruise is fucking scary. Have you seen what Scientology is about?
They worship SPACE ALIENS!!! The guy who started their religion has admitted that he started a religion for the sole purpose of making MONEY!
Now I'm not one to judge people for their beliefs, but a "religion" that was admittedly started just to bilk people out of their money sounds pretty fishy to me.
It's utterly ridiculous. Also, right before Tom and Katie started dating, he was "auditioning" a bunch of young women in Hollywood (like Scarlett Johnasson) to see which one fit him the best for a mutually career advancing relationship.
Katie Holmes doesn't go anywhere anymore without her new "best friend" some woman assigned to her from the scientology center.
Some people are convinced that Tom Cruise is actually gay and this whole relationship is a big smokescreen. I'm not sure I totally believe that, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least if it turned out to be true. Tom Cruise is incredibly homophobic. Most celebs if confronted with a rumor that they're gay will just deny it and laugh it off. Not Tom Cruise. Anyone even SUGGESTS that he might be gay and they're automatically sued.
I've heard so many weird things about Tom Cruise. I'm not sure how true they are, but this whole Tom/Katie thing seems a little too convenient for my liking. I fear for the well being of their future child. _________________

I'm still a non-believer... I'm one of the skeptics who think that Katie's been Stepfordized...
I totally agree with Ringwench. Oh, did you know that he "auditioned" Scarlett Johansen before Katie (sorry RW, didn't see that you mentioned that!)? He invited her to lunch at the Scientology Center, she took two steps in the building, excused herself then ran for the hills. Smart Girl, Scarlett!
And don't get me started on the Scientology thing. The guy who started it is a former Science-fiction novelist. Go fig! I don't judge people by their beliefs either, but I don't buy it at all. And her "best friend" is a woman she met little over 3 months ago. I read an article with Katie, and it was the scariest thing I've ever read!
Interviewer: Tell us about Scientology.
Katie: Tom is just the most amazing person. I'm so lucky.
Interviewer: What's your next movie about?
Katie: Tom is just the most amazing person. I'm so lucky.
Interviewer: How many fingers am I holding up?
Katie: Tom is... wait what is the question? (the "best friend" whispers something in her ear) Oh yeah! Tom is just the most amazing person. I'm so lucky.
Then, the interviewer informs her that her friends and family have stated that they are extremely worried for her and that they love and care abuot her very much. She responds, "People who say such things are not my real friends." WTF?!?!
You tell me that something weird isn't going on... _________________ Get Ready to Disappear...

Another thing that bugs the hell out of me about Tom Cruise is his complete denouncement of psychiatry and psyciatric drugs!
I take anti-depressants. I have for several years now. When I DON'T take them (because I have tried going off them for months, sometimes years at a time) I get such paralyzing depression that I can barely leave my house and I generally want to kill myself. Anti-depressents allow me to feel normal and to function as a regular human being.
So yeah, psychiatry works. Mental illness DOES exist! It's like he thinks people like me just make this shit up to get attention!
I don't have a problem with people saying that psychiatric drugs aren't for them (or don't work for them), or that they aren't personally helped by psychiatry, but to denounce the entire practice and to say that nobody EVER needs medication for any mental illness is just ignorant and asinine.
Tom Cruise has the gall to bad mouth Brooke Shields for taking anti-depressents for her post-partum depression. I'm sorry, but Tom Cruise (or any man for that matter) has NO RIGHT to tell any woman suffering from that that she would be better off if she just took vitamins!
Depression is a REAL problem! It's not make-believe! Wheras scientology IS make-believe, but Tom seems to have no problem believing in THAT! _________________
