Quote: | Columbia Students Protest Lost Star as Speaker
Sorry, Charlie Salinger. Or much less politely, "Get Lost." That's the message from an editor for Columbia University's undergrad magazine, who in this "bwog" summons peers to protest alum Matthew Fox's serving as Class Day speaker on May 15. "We're not anti-entertainment snobs.... We're not going to pretend we wouldn't have bitched no matter who [it] was.... We're not trying to be mean," writes the daily editor for The Blue and White. "But we want a Class Day speaker that has accomplished more than being hot and lucking into [two popular TV shows]." Citing the likes of Anna Paquin, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Brian De Palma as more esteemed alumni, the editor says, "Fox's invitation to speak should be rescinded."
Wow, kinda puts a whole new spin on Jack's tattoo: "He walks among us, but he is not one of us."

WTF? Why? What's wrong with Foxy? |

^ Basically, the student's of Columbia University don't want Matthew Fox as their special class speaker. Which I suppose I can understand if the subject he is speaking about is something like Science. But if it's Media Studies or something then surely he's appropriate? Matt might've not achieved that much in television, but Lost has. _________________

They just do really good impersonations of 'em...

Gee, what would they have said if they were TRYING, then??? Or would they just have stood on the front lawn of the campus and thrown eggs at Foxy when he got there?

Just remember, they're not trying to be mean! (Apparently, they don't have to "try," they're already naturally good at it. )
Geesh! Nice people, huh? Poor Foxy... |

Man some people have WAY too much time on their hands...
Out of all the causes to take up! When I was in the Media Studies place @ my uni, one of our alumni is Tom Fontana (Sopranos writer) and he did a workshop, and it was fine...
What a bunch of losers. _________________

I like Aislynn's reply
Don't most people end up getting some lame often-unknown speaker? Not only is Foxy well-known (because of talent, not because he married famous like a ton of other celebs) but he's the lead in a cultural phenomenon show
My guess is this story is based on one article by one student in the paper, then the press got wind of it and thought it would make a good story if they blew it up into a big controvercy. Turns out it did |

The only reason they have issues with it is because his work is too mainstream for them. If lost was obscure, they'd welcome him with open arms.
