That's harsh
But again, to back up what I said earlier. Guess how big LVI is, all-together? 10 MB. That's how big. Okay, not exactly, since we've got TONS of pictures (way more than most sites) which adds another 30 MB, and all the forum data (all these gigantic posts ) make up another 90 MB or so. Altogether, that's about 130 MB.
Now, one video on youtube is usually somewhere between 10 and 20 MB. Lets say 13 just so I can approximate easier . So 10 videos is equal to one LVI - altogether. And that's just storage space. Lets go to transfer capacity: LVI goes through a little under 100 GB each month of data transfer.
Youtube, on the other hand, "serves 100m videos per day" with our approximation of 13 MB each, lets do some math!
13MB * 100,000,000videos * 30 days a month(approx) / 1,000 MB (which is one GB) = 39,000,000 GB a month transfer, JUST in videos. You can easilly double or tripple that taking into account all the data people transfer just by browsing the site and such.
So lets make it 1,000,000,000 GBs. That's 10 million LVIs.
According to this place, there was an estimated 100 million sites on the net in 1995. I wouldn't doubt that has more than doubled by now... but lets look at the important part of that - the "Active sites' part (because simple domain names are pointless in this discussion) which, for the sake of argument, we can say are about at 100 million as of today (as opposed to the 50 million they were back then).
Out of 100 million, youtube is carting about 10 million sites worth of data through the internet (even though LVI is small in comparison to others, there are still plenty of smaller sites than LVI backing that number up, so we could say LVI is about the average site, or maybe a little smaller... dunno.
Anyway, looking at that, Youtube is freaking crazy. They have to be using more bandwidth than ANY other site on the net with those numbers. We can't be sure just what % of the net they're using, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a 2 digit number. They are essentially sucking up the internet.
People say "oh, Youtube had such a good idea! Have a place for videos! Billion dollar idea!" - no. It wasn't the idea that was so amazing, it was their ability to pull it off. Insane. Insane.
But don't let me stop you from whining about their bad service - just because they're big doesn't mean anything, they still need to serve people - but.... still.... freaking wow. |

Warren, only you would go through the trouble of crunching the numbers
In light of what Warren said, yeah, Youtube is kind of a bitch, but if you've noticed, it's only REALLY been a bitch LATELY, as in...since the Google buyout (?) I haven't a problem with it, really, ever, but then again, I'm an insomniac, so most of my things are being uploaded around this time (3:30am EST), so something tells me that there aren't as many people uploading at this very moment than, say, peak time, which is maybe when you guys are uploading, hence, maybe, the ridiculous amount of processing time? I could be wrong, but it's just a thought. My suggestion is to upload right before you go to bed, and then don't post links until the morning...it's BOUND to be finished processing by then, and you're not ripping your hair out with impatience waiting for it. Works for me... _________________ avatar: Plastic!Winchester Theater by anteka @ LJ; icon by me

Oh wait, exactly at what point did Google take Youtube btw? I heard about them taking it many months ago... i.e. before it was as big as it is now which would have explained it. But I don't know exactly when the "takeover" took place. Did they just do it recently?
I'm less inclined to diss Google after seeing this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHu3hXSl7M4 but if the shoe fits...

So sad but true
Yeah, not uploading at the peak hours when Youtube is... you know... taking entire countries-worth of bandwidth (notice countries being plural ) sounds like a good idea lol.
Which reminds me... once I finally finish this impossible task codenamed LVI 5.0, I've got a vid to put the final touches on and submit! (keep an eye out for me in here grumbling about YT lol) |

Thanks a lot, Ashleigh! I'll submit a new link as soon as LVI 5.0 is up.
As much as I can understand the artists' or companies' complaints about all those copyright infringements (well, it's "intellectual property").... we're not trying to make any money with it. _________________

Which is precisely why it's so retarded that Youtube keeps deleting stuff for copyright infringement. _________________ avatar: Plastic!Winchester Theater by anteka @ LJ; icon by me
