I have just recently watched both the old Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I'm curious as to which one people enjoyed more! Please post which one you chose.

Hands down! I hated the Willy in the new version and also thought that the obnoxious kids were even ten times more obnoxious but not in that good funny way that they were in the first. Willy was so funny in the first one - his one liners killed and he still had straight lines but was a little unkempt at the same time. It was a great juxtaposition. Willy in the new version was just downright creepy. No warmth about him what-so-ever. They did a bad bad job of working that out IMO. I don't dislike Johnney Depp, but I feel like this latest movie only did well because it used new technologies and bold colors and capitalized on the classic's success and Johnney's current "it" status - not because it's actually good. I also miss the old Veruca and the old tunnel scene. Hands down old school Wonka. No contest. No how.

Also, Willy's voice in the new one was practically unbearable. Just wrong. Too whiney.

Watching again I absolutely hated the old one. Too long outside the factory. Even Roald Dahl said they f*cked it up.

Everything in the new one was fantastic. He wasn't creepy, he was funny

I loved the new one because it followed the book.

Yeah. Even the songs were from the book.

I never really liked either film to be honest - though the new one was more interesting, except the Wonka flashbacks got on my nerves, though I mostly only voted for my friend Sian who doesn't watch Lost but is an absolute CATCF nut. (She obsesses over Jordan Fry/Mike Teavee constantly - I swear right, someone spelt Mike's last name 'Teevee' she raged at him for ages, then threw a spikey hairbrush at him)

Yeah... I saw a pic autographed by Evi and that's how she spells it so she's right.

the new one was a rip off of the old one, except with fancy-shmancy CG effects Plus, Depp was hella creepy, and wtf was with his backstory thing? Old one hands down.

psshhhh...it wasn't a ripoff of the old movie! They weren't even trying to follow the old movie.

I liked the flashback. Christopher Lee did well as a Dentist.

yeah, rip off is probably the wrong word I just threw it in without thinking since it's just a general term for anything old that was wronged by its descendant
I liked the new one, but in an entirely different way. It was all wacky, weird-ass and funny, while the first one was magical.

This thread has gotten totally out of hand! Hello! All of you people are SUPPOSED to be agreeing with me! Assume your roles please! Thank you!

Kidding!

I agree with Hobbes, there was something special about the first one and the illuminous Gene Wilder that the re-make (YES! REMAKE!) will never ever have. Johnny's a creep and the soft lines are annoying. No one's gonna give a standing ovation to "Cheer up Charlie" or anything. But, my god! I felt like someone had robbed my soul of all happiness after the remake. It's a soul sucker! It's a dementor! Seriously. It sucked. My. Soul. Think about that for a moment, people.

Why the hell am I still up? It's friggin' Chirstmas Eve already.
