Every since yesterday I've been getting this message from my Anti Virus "a recent attempt to attack your computer was blocked"

My computer got this message at least 20 times or more yesterday, so I turned it off around 3AM, and I turned it back on around 4:30 and it's been getting the message AGAIN the moment I turn it on.

It's so frustrating because it makes me feel like the same person is trying REALLY hard to break into my computer. (I'll admit it I know nothing about this, I'm just assuming everything).

I don't know how to stop these attacks, and they range from medium to high.

I ran Malywarebytes and it didn't pick anything up. I ran my anti virus and it only picked up 'Cookies' like it always does.

Does anyone know what I should do? It's just really freaking me out because it wont stop. It's never acted up like this before.

Oh, that's so frustrating, Brooke!

I had a poke around LVI to make sure there was no tiny bugger hiding in our code and there's not that I could tell but just to be sure I refreshed a few things. So I'd suggest that you try clearing your cache and see if that helps anything.

Since you've already run your security programs and it's not showing that you're infected with anything, I'm not really sure what else you can do. You might check the log in your anti-virus and see if it'll give you more information than "a recent attempt to attack your computer was blocked" which isn't very helpful for you to figure out what's doing the attacking.

Just by doing a search on that phrase, I see that there's talk about it here:

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/quot-A-recent-attempt-to-attack-your-computer-was-blocked-quot/m-p/236549

If you can use that to get more info on what exactly was trying to attack you, then you can turn around and search that info and then maybe locate the source the problem.

You can turn off that message but I'd say that's a last resort since there's apparently something going on and you want to put a stop to the attacks, not just to the message telling you that you're being attacked, if that makes sense?

Good luck, hon! I hope you can get this straightened out! ♥!

I really appreciate that! Thank you. ♥

They actually give me A LOT of information when I click on it, like the attackers IP address. But honestly I don’t really know what an IP address is. The good thing is with the medium and the high attacks they’re blocked and quarantined, so I just leave them there because I’m not very computer suave.

Yes, it’s not the messages that annoy me it’s what the message is ABOUT. LOL. I’m irritated that someone is trying to attack my computer, but I read something and at least it’s blocking it. So the people can attack away and basically nothing will happen.

When you say ‘cache’ what do you mean?

P.S YOU ARE SO HELPFUL!

Sure, no problem, hon! I'm glad to help if I can!

You're using Google Chrome, right? Here's how to clear its cache:

Quote:
Step 1

Once you have opened Google chrome web browser find the tools menu. This is a wrench icon located in the upper right corner. Click on it and it will bring a drop down box. Select "Options"

Step 2

Then next window has a couple of tabs. Select "Under the Hood"

Step 3

Next select "Clear browsing data" , this will bring up the next menu, some think this clears the browsing data, but not to worry the next menu gives the options of what kind of browsing data to remove.

Step 4

In the next menu, check the "Empty the cache" and uncheck any of the other boxes that don't apply, because we only want to clear the cache at this time.

Step 5

In the "Clear data from this period" drop down box "everything" clears all the cache for a fresh start.

Step 6

Click the Clear browsing data. After it is finished close and restart Google chrome. Remember loading is slightly slow the first time you visit your favorite web pages but now you have a clean fresh up to date cache of the website.

Instructions from here.

I'm not sure if it offers you the opportunity to clear the cookies as well as the temporary internet files (which is basically what clearing your cache does ), but if it's a separate thing to clear the cookies, I'd suggest leaving that box marked as well. If it's not a separate thing, then the above procedure will probably clear them for you.

Just be sure to close your browser when it's done clearing the cache, then open it again, that should make sure everything starts over fresh.

Thank you! You are just so helpful.

I was typing and it wouldn't let me type it was so weird. My start up bar at the bottom of my computer changed into a different color and wouldn't let me click on anything.

I wasn't sure if that's what you meant with clearing my browser, I just cleaned up cookies.

I don't have anything exciting on my computer anyway.

Emptied!

I also emptied IE because that's what my mom uses. She's too used to it to use something else.

This computer is also old and I think it likes to run slow sometimes because it used to be a public computer.

If Anything happens I'll just have to use my laptop and vid on this one (I can't vid on my laptop becuase my DVD driver wont work and I had to uninstall Sony and it wont let me install it back because I can't run the disc.

I'm saving up for a new PC.

I forgot to mention to clear IE's cache as well, so I'm glad you thought about it! Hopefully that will help those messages to stop now! *keeps fingers crossed*

That would be wonderful for you to get a new PC! The poor things try but as they get older, things just start to wear out on them. I hope you'll be able to get one soon!

Something I forgot to ask earlier: do you have a firewall? If you have the Internet Security version of your anti-virus, then it has a firewall with it. If it's just the anti-virus, then you probably only have the Windows firewall so you'll want to make sure that it's up.

Also, if you check the Security Center (I've gone blank on what version of Windows you have but for XP you find that under Start - Control Panel - Security Center), it should report that your firewall is on, your anti-virus is on and your Automatic Updates are on. If it's saying that any of them are off, then it's likely you do have some sort of virus/malware/worm/etc. that has gotten in there and made changes to your system.

That was what happened to me when I got hit by a virus, it turned my Automatic Updates permanently off and crippled my Norton anti-virus to the point where it couldn't even start up any longer. *sigh* I eventually had to reinstall XP to finally get things cleaned up and working right again but I hope that your case won't be that severe 'cause that's definitely not a fun process to go through, IMO!

Hopefully, though, that's all worst case scenario stuff and yours will be much easier to fix than that! *continues crossing fingers*

It stating that my windows firewall isn't on. But my anti virus firewall is on. It wont let me turn on the windows firewall.

As long as there is a firewall up, that's all you need. You actually can't run two firewalls at the same time so any third-party firewall (such as the one in Norton Internet Security or if you have a stand-alone firewall like Zone Alarm or Comodo) will turn the Windows firewall off. It's good that you have got a stronger firewall up than the Windows one, which won't stand up to much of an attack, sad to say.

How have those attack messages been doing today? Are you still getting hit with them every little bit?
