Some of you may have noticed that the links to your images are broken. I don't know all the details, and it hasn't happened to me yet, but this is because Photobucket has reduced their bandwidth for free members. This means, to get more bandwidth, you'd have to sign up for a paid account (at least, that's what I've heard).

It might also be because people are hotlinking other people's icons and banners. Please, do not hotlink because it steals other people's bandwidth and might cause them problems later on. This means copying and pasting their links instead of uploading the image to your own server. Try getting your own account at Photobucket or Imageframe or Imageshack to avoid that problem

Having this happen to you is definitely not fun! I know two people who have had this happen to them, and hopefully they won't mind me mentioning them, and it basically replaces all your images with big ugly Photobucket pictures and breaks the link to your original image.

I hope this has made you more aware of why this might be happening. Eventually, the image links may work again but it does seem rather frustrating.

Thanks for letting me know that Jemma b/c usually when I borrow someone's banner or icon for my sig. I just hotlink it b/c I didn't realize it was an issue....but at least that explains why I had to change my icon earlier b/c of the bandwidth picture.

I used to not understand why it was such a big problem either so I thought it would be a good idea to let everyone know. It's beginning to be a problem for more and more people now though. Damn photobucket!

Thanks so much for mentioning this, Jemma! I've been seeing a lot of "bandwidth exceeded" images from Photobucket these past few days and I think it's exactly what you said, with them cutting down on how much the free accounts have, then it's really making hotlinking a lot more of a problem than even before.

Hopefully now people will take those few extra seconds to host the images themselves instead!

Hopefully anybody who was hotlinking and didn't realize that it's wrong to do so will know to host images themselves next time!
