I love these ideas!! especially the Idol-esq one, kate, doing a song from our birth year I'll get to delve into the late 80's!
And a Shakespearean contest is an awesome idea abby! I'd love to see Hamlet, how fun would that be? killing everyone early claim! jks _________________

You should rule out 'The Tempest,' since that would be way too easy. (
Spoiler:
Caliban = Smoke monster/Flocke
(spoilers for 6x04) is readily obvious, for one. To say nothing about, you know, the setting of a creepy and remote tropical island with crazy storms, and the obvious colonialism theme.)
(Do you guys ever use one-time judges for those competitions? My master's degree is in Early Modern Lit, anyway.)
And as far as songs from my birth year, I think I'd either choose the Rolling Stones' 'Start Me Up' or Rush's 'Tom Sawyer.' If I'm really desperate for a fun video, maybe Rick James' 'Super Freak.' Ahahaha, the horror that would be!

The 'Impossible Song' contest.
Take a poll a month before of songs that people think would be impossible to make into a Lost video (with time restrictions, so nobody inflicts the 18-minute 'Alice's Restaurant' on people.)
Everyone has to use one of those songs for their video.
My submission: Patti Smith's 'Gloria.' _________________ I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's. His hair was perfect.
* Non-English song contest (no textual translations allowed besides the title--you have to connote the emotion of the song through the pictures to the largely Anglophone 'Lost' audience. To make it fair, it can't be a language you already speak, either.)
After seeing this, I really want to vid Jin and Sun to an actual Korean song! And I'm not even Korean! I mean, I'm Asian, but oh, this would be all sorts of fun and challenging and I'll be quiet now
(OR A ROUSSEAU VIDEO TO A FRENCH SONG!! Oooooooh ) _________________

re: the songs from our birth year idea... it's good, I like it, but what about those who don't want others to know how old they are... people would know 'cos they'd know which year they were born in. So maybe just from our birth decade? Also gives more variety _________________

Millie: From within five years of your birth? Considering some bands from the late '90s are still around, that'd be way too easy for folks born in the '90s, compared to those of us who are slightly older. Since I doubt many of the vidders here were born after, say, 1995 (sorry to those who were! chose the halfway point), I think that'd make it more time-based.
Jen: Glad you like it! I got the idea after listening to 'Regiment' off of David Byrne/Brian Eno's 'My Life in the Bush of Ghosts'--but I already sort-of speak the language used in that, so it'd rule that out. I think it'd be good variety, though, and (like I've said) for people like me who rely on lyrics, it'd definitely be a good challenge! _________________ I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's. I'm sure it's probably been done (I have such a bad memory, LOL!) or at least suggested, but I think it would be fun to do 80's music at some point.
And, with all the popularity of Glee and other musicals/musical shows/musical movies, it might be fun to do showtunes/musical songs. We could include stuff like Glee, Dr. Horrible, and other musical TV shows and movies, along with actual theatrical shows, just to widen the variety a little. _________________

80s music was done once: My submission was Ben and Juliet to Roxy Music's 'Flesh and Blood.'
Musicals were also done once before--or, at least, Broadway was. When I left for law school's ending chaos, the contest that month was musicals.
I still have a half-finished copy of Avenue Q's 'The Internet Is For Porn' set to Lost, somewhere around... _________________ I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's. His hair was perfect.

Screw-your-buddy contest (although the mods can think of a more polite name for it).
Like a Secret Santa, but a Secret Santa of evil. Everyone gets someone else (the more different the styles, the better) and then has to choose the song, characters, and theme for the other person (so the other person doesn't hate themselves for spending so much time vidding it, limit this to one-minute running time.) The contest criteria should include how screwed the person was with the picks and how much game they brought in response.
I would be so up for this (already preparing the shippy Jate video to the My Little Pony themesong.) _________________ I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's. His hair was perfect.

I like that idea Kate!! The thing is, to 'screw your buddy', it would slightly be sway in favour of those members who are always on the site and in Spam. Like, I know a vid about how awesome Kate is would really push your boundaries But someone who just comes in every now and again and doesn't know everyone might find it limiting. Plus, some people (me included) sign up for contests - if we want to pair people off as we would have to in a comp like that - they sign up, and then pull out because of time restraints or lack of muse or whatever the reason; so for everyone to get someone (i assume to pick the song, ship, etc for them), then that might be disappointing for some members.
Crazy AU's are awesome Mel!! I think limiting it to characters who have never met is a great idea, as opposed to just going say Miles/Kate or something
You can be pretty sure we'll be doing a tribute contest Millie
And you wont beleive it, I just suggested OC's as a comp to the other CM's Supernatural Video Station is doing that this month for their comp _________________

Per the first concern:
Have people fill out a survey:
3 favorite characters:
3 least favorite characters:
Favorite theme:
Least favorite theme:
Favorite musician/genre:
Least favorite musician/genre:
and then pair up from that. So if someone has, say, favorite characters: Jack, Kate, Charlie (not that I necessarily have anything against the last) - favorite themes: Shippy, romantic - favorite musicians: Fall Out Boy, Taylor Swift -- that would be a good one for me! Whereas my 'Sayid, Sawyer' - 'Dark, cynical' - 'New Wave, power pop' would be a good matchup for a bunch of people, I'd bet. And they don't have to be straight back and forth pairs: Just because I get someone doesn't mean they have to get me back.
With regards to people dropping off (having just dropped off from the April contest myself; thanks, real job!) -- that, I'll admit I don't know how to solve. .But I think making them not back-and-forth pairs would help soothe people's feelings with regards to that, anyway.
I am putting way too much thought in this. I just think it would be quite fun! _________________ I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's. His hair was perfect.

Thanks, as always, for all the great ideas! Keep 'em coming, we always pay attention to what y'all are interested in doing!
Kate, your idea might work better as a challenge instead of a monthly contest. It's difficult to judge vids against each other when the basic component is "How well did this vidder do vidding something they wouldn't normally do?" as opposed to "How funny is this vid?" "How convincing is the AU of this vid?" etc. It would be more difficult to determine who met the conditions of the challenge better, if that makes sense? (Like how would you determine who did a better job, me doing a gen, non-shippy vid or you doing a fluffy shipper vid? It would be hard for either of us to vid against our usual convictions but how do you quantify that down to who had the harder time at it if we produced vids of equal quality? Who met the condition better?)
Now a challenge, rather like how a Secret Santa works, is just basically something organized informally and though the vids come on site and are voted on like any other vids, it's not a competition as to who did the better job but more something that everybody participates in for the fun of the challenge.
How would you feel about organizing something like that? You could hold sign-ups, determine the deadline, etc.

I should be asleep by now. Curse you, Aislynn! *shakes fist*
Points taken. I'd be up for hosting the challenge, and would thus be able to enter it without feeling sketchy, if there were no 'winners' per se. I'm just concerned that nobody else will enter and I'll be all, 'Hey, you guys! Please enter?' -- all pathetic and stuff. I'll post a poll tomorrow in Artistic Help to gather interest, anyway.
The challenge format would probably give people leeway to work on it without dropping off (although I still think they should be short videos, so that people wouldn't get too annoyed by what they're doing.)
(I'm still stuffing the ballot box for instrumental/non-English song contest, though.) _________________ I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's. His hair was perfect.
