I've been looking around, reading the odd post around here with hints at what they do, and it almost feels like many of the regulars on this site are in the film industry or something to that avail
I'd kinda like to know, becaue I trully have no idea what I want to be when I graduate *cough * and maybe editing could be for me...? I don't know, but either way, whats your career? |

You have no idea what you've started.
I actually wanted to act for a while. I was a threater major in college until I realized I was funny even when trying to be dramatic, so that shit failed. I sat down and thought long and hard about my favorite thing to do--because I have a core belief that people should pick careers based on what they'd do for free.
TV watching sprung up, and the rest is history. I'm a telecomm major with minor in writing. I'm a damn good fiction writer with the help of spell check, and hope to write for TV one day. I also enjoy editing, and directing so I'm hoping to try out a bit of everything and see which nitch I fall into. Warren you are young which makes your talent even more incredible-if you went into a career in production you'd be very successful-laura _________________

Short version: I will graduate with a shiny new CS/Art degree in May and I am soon to be a Java developer with a focus on GUI/web design. But I also like doing stupider things like making Lost vids and 5 minute TV show pilots.
Currently in production:
Wig Hunter Episode #2
Nintendo Eats Steve
Dance Dance Dan
The Kernal
LAURA would you review my scripts? I think our writing talent ends with thinking up clever titles. We are working on scripts for Dance Dance Dan and The Kernal right now, they could use some work... _________________

Good topic!
Well, I was heavily into Theatre for a long time (nice to see another drama geek here, Laura!), went to university for dramatic arts. But after a couple of years I realized I'm nowhere near good enough to actually make a career out of it. So instead of wasting even more money on an education that would get me nowhere I dropped out and started working a string of jobs that pay very little money and make me hate all of mankind.
Currently I'm working at a call center doing customer care for a cable company. I HATE my job. I LOATHE it. I dread going to work every day. I need to get something better.
I'm hoping to save enough money to go to college for digital video editing within the next couple of years. As editing is truely my passion. It's the only thing that I can spend HOURS doing non stop and never get sick of. I'm constantly vidding in my head. If I could do something like this as a career (you know, even if it's something like editing commercials or local news storys) I'm almost certain I would be completely happy for the rest of my working life. I just need some sort of job where I can be given a task to do, then left to my own devices to do it.
I'm sick of my job where I have to talk to morons all day and pretend to be Miss Mary Sunshine when all I really want is for people to leave me alone so I can go home and geek it up with my editing software. |

I would love to Enchirito-I'm currently editing my brother-in-law's current fantasy masterpiece which is so secretive if he read this he'd rip me a new one. e-mail the scripts to me-l
(btw do you have director's notes in there as well? It will help a lot.)
Ringwench quit your job! I'm currently working at an animal clinic because I actually like it--not planning on doing it for the rest of my life, but it keeps me happy in the present. _________________

This is the thread where I become utterly pathetic...
I've been unemployed for about five months now. Probably why I've been able to put so much time into Lost videos. It's fucking pathetic. Basically I've been doing clerical jobs here and there for the last three years. Some cool, some lame. I failed to pass a probationary period at the last, which I actually quite enjoyed, cause I had too many sick days. When that happened I told myself I was going to hold out for something I truly wanted to do. Well, five months later and not much effort put into it, still no job and things are looking dim. Gotta find something SOON. But there are some prospects out there, so now worries.
I had no idea what I wanted to do out of high school. Nothing. But my rich grandparents were willing to pay full ride for me to go to school, but I had to go right away and they didn't give me any room to sit around and think about what I wanted to do. So I picked English cause it sounded kinda cool and a job in teaching sounded kinda cool. AA in two, and BA in two more. Not bad, but by the end realized I had no desire to enter a career that isn't respected well enough to get the compensation it deserves. So started the clerical run.
Was always interested in film, but I only started to realize how much as I was going through college. About four years ago I picked up a digital camcorder and this computer and I've churning out silly shorts with my buddies. I think I dig editing far more than I do directing or writing. I really enjoy how editing can really shape something. I'd like to try something more serious, but gripping fear and overall lack of motivation is sort of keeping me from it. What a loser!
Occasionally I do some some side work on very small films people have for themselves (I did some color correction for this guy who made a live action GI JOE movie... LOL... you'd just have to see it) or I'll do some digital photo work for people which I also love, but it's not really regular enough to pay the bills.
If I could I'd go back to school. There's school in Emeryville (where Pixar is, not to far from where I live) that I'm dying to go to, but tuition is crazy insane. I'd have to go far deeper in debt than I already am. The school is awesome though. Digital graphic arts, 3D animation and game development, Sound degrees, dvd authoring. Everything I'd love to do.
Hobbes, and now I really feel like the old man giving advice to the young kid who will likely pay no mind cause I'm saying a bunch of cliched shit he's heard a million times, but you have EVERY opportunity ahead of you. You seem to dig the video work. If it's something you're really into there are awesome schools all over the place where you can study and do that. I wish I'd had a better sense at that age cause then my grandparents would have footed the bill for me doing something I had true passion for.
So yeah, long story short: Interest in film, clerical peon for the most part, currently unemployed.
This thread is really cool. It's neat to see how everyone has their hand in something creative, though it shouldn't be surpising. _________________

Jake your story is very familiar to me. Dude you live in California! The opportunities are endless for the career your interested in. I'm sitting at RIPBS right now because ABC6 wouldn't get back to me LOL. I say you open the newspaper and see if there is anything that interests you that doesn't have the word "temp" in it.
I can totally understand the lack of motivation--I have it too...mine stems more from the fear of rejection, but as time goes on I think fuck it. Everything happens for a reason, and if i want things to happen I need to step up and make them happen.
I am applying to Comedy Central for a summer internship, and if they take me great--if not--I will go into abc 6 and make them the best damn coffee they ever tasted---then immediately ask if i can watch LOST before everyone else LOL.
You just need to get your foot in the door somewhere--you are not a loser, just old and senile is all _________________

Laura... you're not going to believe this. But I've been eyeing a TV writing career for a while too. Yes, this just keeps getting more and more interesting.
For now though, I'm on "hiatus" from college because I moved and there was a transcript issue and basically? I SUCK! (My goal is to be re-enrolled by fall.)
Soooooooooo, I'm working in retail. Not the most glamorous gig, but hey, it's better than a "real" job. |

Pretty much the same here. I kept dicking around with college, so my parents gave me the ultimatum: get a job or go into the military . Ok, camouflage, not my color. So I've been waitressing, retail, what have you forever and a day now. I did work at a medical billing office, but after my boss quit and they hired Baby Hitler, it really started to suck. Plus, they hired a new manager, who became my immediate supervisor... let's just say I got sick and tired of working for someone with the mental capacity of a 2 year old, worshiped Spongebob, and had no idea how to be a manager (this I found out when she paraded my 2 week Notice letter around to everyone in the office behind my back).
Right now, I'm at a Bath and Body Works (I'll never quit there! I love it!), and I'm an assistant manger at this little mom and pop craft/folk art store. I do love the editing, but I want to eventually make my own films and perhaps one day *prays real hard* I can make it to Sundance with them (not to sound all cornball or nothing). I started a production Co. with 2 of my friends and now we have 3 scripts in development with the hopes of starting filming on one of them this summer.
That's about it... _________________ Get Ready to Disappear...
