I have recently made the switch to Vegas and am loving it but cannot get my head around one odd very specific problem!
When i import some clips into Vegas the video and audio show up totally fine and both can be used in clips, but with others the Video appears but the audio says "Media Offline" in the timeline.

I have tried installing and uninstalling various codecs but cannot find out why some work and others do not, after looking at the clips properties themselves there is only one small tiny difference in them:
When you go to properties of the clip and click summary, the audio format is listed as MPEG Layer-3 for all of the clips, BUT the ones that do not load correctly and say media offline have an Audio Sample Size of 16bit and the ones that do load correctly do not have an Audio Sample Size listed!

The clips play in all media players fine by the way, this problem only occurrs in Vegas!

Any suggestions?!

Are they AVI files? If so; the audio might not show up. And Media Offline means there's no audio there for it to import, even though it plays fine in like MEdia Player or whatever, if its an AVI file the setup is different and it won't recognize that there is audio to import from the file so it just says Media Offline. It's not a Vegas thing; it's to do with the clip. Have you tried converting it to WMV with zamzar? That might do the trick

Vegas's inability to get both the audio and video to work at the same time in .AVI is just a sad fact of life at this point in time, I'm afraid. The best I've been able to find is that Vegas basically is designed to deal with uncompressed .WAV audio and .AVI inevitably has compressed .MP3. (Though Vegas can use .MP3 as a music track, so why it has a problem with it when it's compressed into .AVI, I have no idea. )

Strangely, I do have a select few .AVI's that will import with audio, but often if you try to use it, it will act in odd ways (like say you've used dialogue from the same scene as your video clip, well the next time I open the project, the same dialogue on the timeline now might be from later on in the scene, even though nothing has been moved! ). If I need audio, then I always just pop the episode/clip over into WMM and render it out that way, then import that into Vegas and match it up with the .AVI video footage. It just saves a lot of trouble.

Glad that you're enjoying Vegas otherwise! This is just one of its little neurotic things, I'm afraid. I hope that eventually in later version they can get it to work with compressed .AVI audio, that would be awesome!

Thank you both for your help! I think I'll try making the clips i want the audio for WMV's. I thought it was strange that some work and others wouldn't - now I know its a common problem I'll know what to do in the future!
