I just thought of something that I think might be a good idea for a contest but... I don't know. So I'm just gonna put it out there and let you guys judge
A lot of videos nowadays - from what I've noticed - tend to rely heavily on effects - flashy transitions, textures, colouring, you name it. (Half the time, these videos sort of get on my nerve but I won't discuss that here ) I think it would be interesting to have a contest where vidders are encouraged to use less effects instead of more - maybe restrict it to simple crossfades, zooms, and things like that. Instead of a flashy video with a gazillion effects, what about a simple video that still manages to be just as amazing?
I don't know. Whatever. Just something to chew on.
Plus, it's never been done before. _________________

That's a good idea Jen Only think would be judge ability; what would we judge it on? Would it be the person who uses less effects the best? what if everyone just uses crossfades and fade ins/outs; then how can we differentiate between them? I'm not shooting down your idea; i think it's great!! it just needs a judgeability quotient to it _________________

Glad you think so, Kat
Hmm, well, I think the key thing with simple videos is the story they're trying to tell. (OhmygodIsoundsolameandcheesy.) I mean there's no point in just whacking clips together and saying "okay there you go -- a nice simple video with no effects!" And there's definitely different ways that you can use crossfades and so forth - beat use, for example. Hard cuts are simple, but still effective in videos, especially if it's a fast paced one with lots of action.
Discuss. Haha. _________________

well, since we just did a beat use competition I think it might work well going by the story element; focusing on the story rather than the effects? _________________

That would be the best way to do it, imo -- story, and just the same basic editing principles we use when voting (eg. song choice, clip choice, clip length, even beat use, which doesn't have to be anything spectacular...)
There are plenty of really beautiful vids on this site that use just simple cuts/crossfades for transitions and no colouring or overlays. It's just a matter of finding the right idea.
Maybe you could add another element though, to make judging easier. Like you could do another ship contest with those restrictions -- kind of like the beat use one. Something like this would certainly encourage creative beat use.
Just a thought. _________________

Just a few ideas I don't know if they been used yet:
What about a Disney theme? I'm not just talking like Snow White is Kate or Charlie is Peter Pan but like using a Disney song and any Disney song. Or like the monologue from the Haunted Mansion ride? What about something like that?
Or even a minor character contest like Libby, Eloise, or Walt but none of the big major characters.
Or even a Broadway theme like using songs from Broadway Musicals like Rent, Mammia Mia, Hairspary, Beauty and The Beast, Mary Poppins, Chicago, or Aida.
Just a few ideas. _________________

Hey there
We had a Disney comp awhile back and we've also done a minor character comp, but it hasn't been in awhile so i'll mention it to the others for future ideas Musicals is one that we've been tossing around for awhile (I already have one picked when we do it) _________________

I got a few ideas, like maybe a james bond theme contest, a noir style contest, or maybe a summer-fun contest. just my 2 cents. _________________

What about a Libby backstory contest? She's the only character that didn't have a backstory so I think there would be endless possiblities. Or even a tv series contest like using the theme to create Lost credits. I've seen a lot of vids like that on youtube. I know Kat has one of Lost to Charmed. Not sure if that one has been used... _________________

We have a credits contest every year. We've used regular songs as well as tv themes. It has been fun in the past though, good idea. A Libby backstory would be interesting too... not sure about how the judging goes on things like that, but I'd be interested in seeing those types of vids. _________________

Yeah, we love our credit comps!! glad you like my lost/charmed one, hehe We tend to refrain from doing single character comps as it's very limiting to vidders, but we've been floating a Backstory idea around for awhile. Like How did Claire and thomas meet? Why did Christian start drinking in the first place, that sort of thing, like filling in the gaps so if we ever did that comp, it would be perfect for you to show us libby's backstory _________________

Ah ok. I was trying to brain storm things a few days ago for ideas and I'm glad I came up with good ones because they were used lol. Just don't do the backstory one for July because I won't be here . I'll be in the middle of no where where the nearest Starbucks is 35 miles away and in another county. _________________
