I don't think I've seen this addressed elsewhere (though if I've just missed it, my apologies I'm waaaay out of the loop right now ):

Why do you think that the Island (or the electromagnetic doohickey or whatever it was) cured Rose of her cancer and gave Locke back the use of his legs... yet was letting Ben die of a tumor?

My top theories --

1. The Island's electromagnetic doohickey Super Powers O' Healing just so happen to NOT work on tumors. Oops...

2. Ben really has lived his whole life on the Island, which then somehow rendered him immune to its healing properties.

3. Uhhhh, that would've seriously messed up the whole dramatic "Will Jack kill his own patient during surgery?????" storyline.

4. Something about Ben just really honks off the Island and it withheld its healing powers out of spite.

5. The writers, uh, kinda forgot about the Island Super Powers O' Healing when developing this storyline. Oopsie!

6. Other, please describe...

What do you guys think? (I guess I should've made this a poll... )

I'm gonna have to take #5 for $1,000, Alex. What? It's the Daily Double?!

...What is...the reason Ben's tumor is going to kill him while Locke and Rose are cured of their ailments mysteriously by the power of the Island?

i like that idea, except the healing powers worked on rose.... remember, she said she knew the island did something and now its gone...
lol, i do like all ur theorys tho!

i think ben has lived his whole life on the island. and that there is some sort of a magnetic feild/ thingy that makes weird stuff happen, lol, like locke getting out of the wheelchair type of thing

edit: sorry jen, lol, didnt see ur comment on rose and locke,
so then like aislynn said, maybe ben was amune with the powers,,, or!,, what if because he was born there it doesnt effect him...

I think that, short of it being just a writer oversight, that that's going to be the reason.

I thought about that, too. But why didn't it cure him when he was living in the Hatch closet? (I know it wasn't a closet, BTW. It just became a joke with my friend that Jack, Sayid and Locke had a man in the closet... *snort* Sorry... Bad Ais, no biscuit! )

Back to semi-seriousness. I think if living on the other Island would've been enough to keep him from dying, then you'd think Ben would stay there if he could.

Hey, my "WhoWhatHUH?" thread is open to any random Lost questions! Feel free to post those hm, I wonder... questions here any time!

And I wondered that about Carl myself! Though, up until Alex went looking for him, I really suspected he was a "plant" put next to Sawyer to give him a "visual" as to what would happen if he tried to escape.

#6. The magical island healing powers were more psychological than physical. Locke may have lost his legs that way to begin with, and coupled with the impact from the fall, gained them back. Rose's cancer isn't "cured", she just feels like it's cured. That means nothing. But giving each of them the willpower to keep going can do a lot. Sometimes that's more important than any of the physical stuff. In short, the island gave them hope to get better, and so they did. Even with Locke's hatch-door-stabbed leg. He kinda started walking out of willpower, not because he should have.

#7. Magnets have magical healing properties which cure anything. That's why everyone was feeling better, and it had cured and/or kept Henry's tumor at bay for a long time (perhaps it's why he lives on the island in the first place), but now that the hatch is destroyed, whatever it was doing isn't helping anymore.

#8. Whatever saved the losties from what should-have-been a lethal crash also cured Locke's legs and Rose's cancer. Maybe the monster is a magical healing deelee and just doesn't like Henry and the Others - what the hell would I know?

The magnet thing is true...as Ruth looks down at her magnetic anti-carpal tunnel wrist wrap...

Yep, based in truth. They do help medically. Just not to the cancer-curing extent , but I'm fairly sure the writers could get away with it as an explanation of the magnet being all big and superpowerful lol.
But it's still farfetched.

Certainly! I'd be honored!

I'll be glad when we find out what that whole thing was about! Was it just for psychological reasons to keep people out? Or did it once have a "real" purpose? Hmmmmm...

That's a lightbulb going off over my head... I hate to admit I've never entertained the idea that maybe NONE of the "cures" have actually been real. Wow... *wanders away, in awe of Warren's incredible powers of Big Thinking*

Hey, I've got one kinda like that, too! I also find a wide copper bracelet to be helpful when my wrists are killing me (it holds in the heat).

And my new "pondering" for the day...

Jack estimated the X-rays he looked at to be those of an approximately 40 year old man. I bet Michael Emerson appreciated that they've never corrected that... He's 52. (I would've thought it was in his late 40's, myself but I'm horrible about guessing ages! )

Okay, so that was more of a statement than a "pondering," huh?

ETA: Ah ha, I remembered what my pondering was supposed to be!

Why, do you think that Ben let himself be captured by the Losties? And tortured by Sayid, while masquerading as Henry Gale? Considering that he has a GIANT TUMOR that is days away from killing him, wouldn't it have been in his best interest to have avoided the whole beating and torture aspect?

So, why didn't he just send somebody else?

My guess: Because the writers hadn't thought of the whole "Ben has a GIANT KILLER TUMOR" storyline yet at the time when they brought him on as Henry Gale... And after that, well, darn it, it was too late! They had to just run with it!

But as that I'm dealing with the reality in the show, not the reality of writing the show, then I can only presume that Ben had some reason to believe that he -- and only he -- needed to infiltrate the Losties as Henry, a reason that outweighed the potentially fatal consequences of sticking to his story, no matter what Sayid or Ana or Locke or Jack did to him.

As for why they didn't just go and HELP the Losties when the plane first crashed instead of sending Ethan and Goodwin to play "Yo, we were in the crash, too!" well... That one's simple:

Then the show would've been over by the end of the Pilot ep after Ben and the Others kindly packed all of the survivors into their sub and took them to Fiji, where they could then proceed to be properly rescued...
