Hey guys! I wanted to know what programs you used to make all the great videos I see, and where I can go to buy them. My Windows Movie Marker is a piece of crap, and I want to make better videos for the fans of JATE to enjoy. Any help would be loved!

I just bought Sony Vegas since I browsed about the forums, and saw that a lot of you use the program. I hope I'll get the hang of it when it comes in the mail.

Heh well so did I, and I found that I needed the Tutorial by Polarbear to help Steph's 'Guide For Dummies' is great help too. So good luck!

The best thing to do when you first get Vegas is not to attempt a vid. Spend about a week or so playing about with it so that you can get the hang of the program, because it has A HELLUVA lot of differences to WMM. Once you know pretty much how to use it, THEN make your vid. I did this before I did Any Other Name, which was my first Vegas vid, and it really helped. Of course, I was still figuring things out as I went along, but I didn't get into the program completely blind, either.

Well, the first vid I ever did (wayyyy before LOST was even on) was on WMM, and I do agree it has its limitations. It is, however, an interesting challenge for people. Anyway I went on to a bunch of programs from there, but now I have:

1.) Cyberlink PowerDirector

2.) Sony Vegas Movie Studio

3.) Avid XPress Pro

Okay so PDR is really good and for ease of use, its excellent. My chief complaints are sometimes it can be a little spazzy-mcgee. Also it doest have the "reverse footage" function, which I end up doing separately in VEGAS and importing in.

Vegas- I havent *really* gotten the hang of it yet- Pixie is absolutely right when she said really explore it first. Ive started videos on it, but never finished. I think Im so used to PDR, and its clear timeline et al, that I get confused with VEGAS. But it has really fun stuff on it, I end up doing special fx on there and making a little "reel" for myself to use in PDR. But Paul's & Steph's tutorials are EXCELLENT:
Paulies: http://www.lostvideo.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=3869

Stephs: http://www.lostvideo.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=8411

Okay so the AVID one (ooooh's and ahhhh's from around the forum) is for a course Im taking...yes it cost around $2000. I have no idea how to use it. It has a physical KEY to operate it (not kidding). I have never even opened the program....Im terrified, and want to wait until I get to that class (last in line of course).

Hope this helps.

How much are some of these programs?
I like WMM, but mine's busted. It simply won't import anything, just crashed. It used to do this, just on certain episodes, but this time round it won't install anything at all.
So unless anyone knows how to fix that I'm gonna need a new program

Aislynn's Guide to WMM is a good one to check out if you need a solution to this problem, she's got almost every problem-with-crappy-WMM scenario in there. Otherwise it might be worth re-downloading the program from the internet, but try everything else first because what I say might be wrong and I don't want to be responsible for depriving you of vidding programs altogether.

I bought Sony Vegas Movie Studio from Amazon earlier this year at around £50-£60 (can't quite remember exactly how much) which is quite a reasonable price for software! I'm not sure how much the others are - you'd probably need to shop around to get the best deal - but I've had no trouble with Vegas. The only thing I don't like about it is the fact that it takes so damn long to render, when my crappy little WMM v.1 only took about three or four minutes to render a whole vid! But I digress.

Vegas is a worthwhile investment, but like I said in my earlier post, spend about a week getting to know it first, rather than attempting a vid straightaway, because it is a helluva difference from WMM, which is a pretty straightforward, easy to use program, though Vegas does have VERY useful 'Show Me How' tutorials.

Hope this has helped, I don't know much about these programs but what I do know seems to come in useful quite a lot!
