See, that's what happened:

[spoiler:743db1711d]The group was safely set up at a former prison but then someome sabotaged their security measures and the place was quickly overrun by Walkers. Some people died and Carol was believed to be dead, too. Daryl was grieving for her and mourning her death.

A little while later Daryl gets back into the cell block where they've found the other bodies and where Daryl believes to find Carol's body. Instead he finds.... her!
Weak, dehydrated - but alive! And he carries her off into security [/spoiler:743db1711d]

So, um, yeah - it may not be perfectly clear if you don't watch the show.
