BOOO!!

Was it commendable for Jack to run away from the scene because it didn't make any rational sense. Has he not seen the stuff that has been going on around him? I believe something will happen if the button isn't pushed that's just my opinion. He did push it in the end because he couldn't take the risk the tiny risk in his eyes that somethign weird would happen and he was right.

I agree with you about Helen. I suggested last week (go me) that there could be two Helens and the second Helen was a manifestation of the true Helen from his past. It sounded too much like a sex line to be the real Helen.

Can you really not feel pity for Locke. Yes the guy is messed up like Sawyer but can't you understand why? Jack in comparison and characters like Boone imo have had much easier lives and are often unfairly compared to Locke and Sawyer.

Locke and Sawyer are my favourites, in that order, because of that reason. It's not that I just find them cool or something. Nope, the backstory is what gets me.

Anyone want to read that book they pulled out that the film was hidden behind? according to the writers, it's a big literary clue. Much more than Watership Down anyway.

AMAZING episode! I'm thinking Orientation may be this season's Walkabout. Revealing key themes that will(hopefully) shape the events of the rest of the season.

you know, up until this episode, I have pretty much always despised Jack. This was the first time i found myself thinking - holy shit - Jack is right. Locke's blind faith has lead him straight into the trap of being controlled by what is now pretty obviously a big social sciences expiriment. I'm now all but convinced that eveything 'strange' about the island is most likely made up / created so their behavior can be observed.

This has always been a theory, but in my mind this episode confirms it. I was definitly not expecting these revalations this early!

I'm also thinking, Lockes my have faith, but he's not stupid. It may turn out that he's not getting 'played' after all. Locke may be 'in on it'. I used to think his "this isn't suposed to happen this way/what am i suposed to do" thing was a red herring, but i'm not so sure now.

In any case, it was just awesome to watch the clock ticking down and just knowing they were going to get stuck in the system... caught in the expiriment...

wonder what will happen to Desmond...

...oh, and pitting 'Survivors' against 'Others' to both groups of 'plane crash victims' part of the expiriment is going great too!

Hanso is a genius!

I really don't think all the secrets of the island are going to be revealed with this one station. Remeber there are 5 other stations around the island. Me and tara were discussing what other ones could be researching. Zoology maybe or meterology the list is endless. This station was researching electro magnetic forces but that doesnt mean all of them were.

based on the metagame thinking of the fact that there are still at least 3 seasons to go ater this one, I somehow doubt it's as simple as a psychological experiment, though I DO suspect that we'll be thinking that's the case at a number of times throughout the show... what the final answer will be, I don't know though.. lol. As someone said, theories are useless here, they just lead to some random new thing (*coughnumberscough*)

But more than anything, that ending just bugs me If it's all a mind game, and we can figure it out this early, then where's the fun in that?! Nah, gotta be much more to it than just that...

But glad you liked the episode too E! How about the backstory? Equal to, less than, greater than, or WAY less than the others of Locke's?

Gotta love how Locke managed to pull Jack into this mess too heheh.

But whatever the Dharma initiative may be, I don't think Locke's just playing into it to dedicate the rest of his life to putting in those numbers. He just gained a very valuable weapon he could use when he needs it most. He doesn't know WHAT it does, if anything, but as long as others believe it does something, he has the power. Interesting...

Oh, and that's the best sig ever Paul.

To me this whole pushing a button thing is equal to putting cheese in front of a mouse and if it picks the right prize it gets rewarded. You put the button in front of the computer operators and promise them that nothing bad will happen if they push the button so they push the button for the reward. It's a great big mind game and Lockes blind faith just got them sucked into a ugly mess. Locke is unstable in every way and dangerous for all the people around him. More people get hurt then he helps. For me to start to like him he'd have to give his own blood to a dying man, or be so dedicated to his promises that he would beat himself over it if he couldn't fulfill it, and many other things. Instead all we see Locke do is let people get hurt. Look at the crap that happened to poor Boone, the pain he caused Shannon, he didn't listen to Hurley at the hatch, he could have very easily gotten Kate killed in that Hatch. I wouldn't trust Locke if my life depended on it.

Now keep in mind I like Terry O'Quinn and I think he is a damn good actor but I can't make myself care for the character of Locke. This character can sometimes act like a little lost boy that thinks he knows it all but really doesn't. However I agree with E that I'm starting to think Locke knows so much more then he is letting on. I'm almost wondering if he didn't use hunting for Claire as an excuse to find the hatch that he already knew was there. Anyone think that he is aplant purposely pitting them all against each other? I don't trust the character but something tells me that might be what the show creators were going for. I think for Jack it's a matter of keeping your friends close and your enemies closer.

All of the characters have problems because if they didn't there wouldn't be a show but out of them Locke is the least rational. Even scarier is that he is the one that has the knives.

I can't respect a character that has done all the things he's done so far on the island. He's not acting like an adult but a scorned child that never got over what happened to him. The man needs some serious therapy...lol.

Best post ever Aimee! You worded it perfectly in the same way that I feel! And it's totally true! Have you ever seen Locke pour blood out for someone? Nope!

I still think Jack wins in the loose cannon department. While he does act more rationally than Locke, he is also more impulsive.

Locke is usually not a loose cannon. He's usually calm. Its just that he acts like he's hiding the motives behind his actions. (probably because he is). BUt naw, loose cannon is Jacks thing. Look at how he handled the standoff with Desmond - pointing a gun and demanding answers. Locke interacted with Desmond in a much more friendly, cooperative manner.

But the reason i was rooting for Jack in the button push decision, was because he was the only one who seemed to realize what pushing that button would do. Its pretty obvious. THe more they push the button, the more they become dependant on it. Until they totally convince themselves that if they don't push it, the world will end. Just look at Desmond. At first, he probably watched the film and reacted like Jack. But then, he was like... well better be safe than sorry better push it just this once... and before you know it, hes totally enslaved. ANd just crazyily convincing enough to convice his 'replacments' to 'believe' in his self-inflicted dementia.

thats what i got out of it anyway.

I think it was Boone who chose to go up to the plane and it was hardly Locke's fault he couldn't go up there unless you're accusing him of faking. Stop for a minute and wonder if the people around him are not drones maybe they are invested in the island's mysteries as much as he is. Blaming Locke for Kate and Boone 'being put in danger' is treating them like children. They can make their own decisions and it is wholly their responsibility. They were never tricked.

For me Hurley is the loose cannon jumping around shouting the numbers, the numbers? Was Locke meant to stop? He did the right thing in blowing open the hatch. Without Locke there would have been no hatch he has done everything he could have to open it. Now they have fresh food, showers and water.

In my opinion Locke has done the most for them. Jack giving blood was pointless as Boone was dead anyway. Locke saved Jack, Locke found boar for them. Locke is the calm influence and is the only one who questions his faith/science when he was screaming what do i have to do. He is willing to bend the rules. Jack is like stubborn as a rock and is dangerous in his commitment to rational fact.

Locke ignored Hurley's warnings about the numbers. He even looked at him and acknowledged later that he did hear him. He should have at least stopped and listened to what he had to say.

Locke got obsessive over the hatch and that is what killed Boone. If he had been less secretive about stuff that concerned ALL the survivors then they could have all worked together to get into the plane safely as a group. Instead Locke wouldn't even let Boone tell his own sister about the damn hatch. What happens on this island concerns them all and Locke did the wrong thing for the wrong reasons. Jack puts the safety and care of the other survivors overs himself. As for Boone already being dead if I had been Boone's family I would have wanted Jack to do whatever he could to save him. Jack went above and beyond the call of duty by giving him his own blood. He did everything in his power to tryand save the life of a fellow survivor. And where was Locke where all of this was going on? Something tells me he wasn't off pumping his own blood into a dying man trying to give him some comfort in his last moments.

For those that don't think Locke is a loose cannon look at his insane yelling at the hatch when he coudn't open it. He didn't give a damn about Boone just that the hatch hadn't opened. Kate begged him to pull her up instead he kept lowering her. Hurley begged him to not light the fuse at the hatch and he still did. He left Boone and took off when Jack needed the truth to properly treat Boone. He ignored Walt's warningsa bout the hatch. He broke his promise to the woman that loved him with all her heart. He has a big temper and we've seen that time and time again.

For the survivors sake I hope on of the other survivors from the back end is a therapist because that's what Locke needs. I understand that he had a traumatic life with being abandoned by his parents, used as an organ donator by his "I could care less" father, and no real friends. But here they are on an island in the middle of nowhere needing each other and Locke is off acting on his own. I believe in what Jack said aboutall of them needing to stick together in order to survive. Everyone that goes off alone with Locke on some trip through the jungle ends up in some kind of bad way. Locke needs to start caring about the others and less about the islands mysteries. He keeps getting the group into bad situations. If that's not a loose cannon then what is? He's emotionally unstable and a danger to others. Plus I'm not entirely convinced that he doesn'tknow more then he is letting on.

I don't trust Locke but because I like Terry O'Quinn I hope the writers give me a reason to like the character but as of now I don't trust this character. I also have this sick feeling that which ever character dies this year will somehow be because of him.

When Locke sits down and starts talking to people and better interacting and listening to people then I maystart to like him some more. But when someone asks you to stop doing something and you keep doing it you start messing with that persons life and that's not fair. Kate was scared and he should have acknowledged that for Kate to be scared said a lot and he should have pulled her up immediately. Instead he put her life in danger. I don't respect that because to me it's the equivelant of someone being raped and a woman begging her attacker to stop and he keeps going. Think about that next time you wonder just how stable or unstable John Locke is.

Damn I really should have made a anti-Locke video for last months contest...lol.

lol...for the record RS my above post was posted not long before yours so I didn't see this post.

Let's all just agree to disagree. Back to talking about the episode that has kind of gotten ignored here in this topic. We all have our favorite characters and the ones we don't like. No need to debate over them (but I have to admit it was fun debating...lol).
