After an affair with Arthur Petrelli, Rose Greenwood falls pregnant with his son and raises the baby by herself, away from the rest of the Petrelli clan. Alex Petrelli grows in to an independent young man who struggles to get on with his drunk and abusive mother. Their perpetual arguments lead to Alex wanting to leave home, but when he tells his mother this, she refuses to listen. It is around this time that Alex’s ability starts to manifest and he sees the dark reality of his mother’s past, and who his father really is. Alex soon learns to use his ability as a defence mechanism, using his newly acquired knowledge of people to scare them off, causing Alex to be alienated and disliked among his community. Not knowing how to turn off this confusing phenomenon soon becomes overwhelming and one day during a car journey with his mother, he demands to know the truth about where he came from. Consequently, this leads to another argument and the car crashes, killing Rose. Alex had been driving and he blames himself for his mother’s death. At her funeral, Alex spots a stranger (Peter Petrelli) watching the service, but doesn’t question his presence. Since his mother’s death, he has been living in a foster home full of bullying kids and abusive care workers. He is on the receiving end of abuse particularly from Tom (Oscar Isaac, Alex's careworker who frequently beats/abuses him, and Ryan (Chris Carmack,), the boy who constantly bullies him during his time in care. This becomes the norm for Alex, until one day a man named Peter Petrelli shows up looking for him. Peter tells Alex that he is his brother and informs him all about the Petrelli family and their superhuman abilities. Alex is sceptical at first and is resistant when Peter claims he can train Alex to control his ability. He has learnt to not rely on anyone but himself and isn’t sure he can trust Peter but, on touching him, he begins to see everything from Peter’s POV, including his other brother, Nathan’s death and all the Petrelli family have been through. This alone makes Alex feel part of the family and he lets Peter take him to New York where Peter takes on the role of older brother, taking care of him and teaching him all he knows.
