Okay, this isn't really the right place to do this, but it didn't really fit in anywhere else, but here goes.
Okay, I'm kind of new at vidding, not really in the normal sense since i did my first one a long time ago, and i've been editing real movies with my friends for years, but as far as fan vidding goes i'm pretty much a noob.
So I don't know what to do. I started a firefly/serenity vid a few weeks ago, and now that it's the break i figured that i might as well actually work on it, and then it occured to me that i never checked on youtube if someone's done the same thing before.
Well, someone has, and their surprisingly similar, even with both of us putting River's big fight scenes on the chorus.
I'm not sure what to do, because I would like to finish doing it and post it, but i'm not sure if there's some kind of rules about this kind of thing?
I fell kind of dumb and I'm sorry for having to ask, but if someone could tell me what do do that would be awesome.
thanks in advance,
Lil |

It should be fine to post as long as it isn't exactly the same.
If you want to check though that it's ok i would probably say that you message them on their youtube account and tell them that you're videos are similar and you just want to make sure that it's ok to post. |

I might post it (once I finish it...) and then message them and ask them to watch it and see if it's okay...
thanks! |

no problem
Yeah, i know with youtube being such a big place it's kinda common for people to have the same ideas for the same tv show or film. |

I often have similar ideas to other people. I'd just post it. If it's insanely similar, just send them a PM saying something like - "I was working on this vid and it's so weird, but I watched yours and it's really similar. Do you mind if I post it, I promise I didn't copy" or something. That's probably dumb, but I've done stuff like that before. _________________

Yeah just post it! I mean it wasn't intentional and you didn't steal scenes from their video so I wouldn't worry about it at all...they might not even see your vid unless they do for a search for it or something.

i have had that also! Most all the time its very unintentional. Maybe you could change stuff up, or make it some way different. Maybe change up the ending. But youll be fine. Post it! Great minds think alike! |

I've had that sort of thing happen to me before and it's frustrating when you think you had this great idea and then find out that somebody else had it, too! I agree with Trey (wolffootball37), what I've done in that situation is to still do my version of the song/idea but I took the parts that were the most similar and re-edited them so they weren't SO like the other vid. Just try to give it your own "stamp" and that should be just fine!
After all, there are so many vidders out there and really just so few songs and ideas that it's impossible to not find that other people have thought of the same idea as well, I guess. |
