I'm starting to see how the rest of this season is going to make sense.
Daniel either caused the incident, or wouldn't be able to change the past (was thinking that it would be the first until the end of this episode....shot by your own mother in the past. Now we know what she meant about sacrifice....and WTF is up with Widmore saying he was his son too?!)
By changing the past, everything will be erased. It will create this massive paradox. I can't see that happening. I can see Jack failing at changing the past, maybe he actually causes the incident.
Anyway, my theory, is that when the incident happens, anything that does not belong in that time (meaning our losties) will be kicked back to where they belong (May look like the standard flashes we were seeing in the first few episodes, flashing through time).
Daniel was right though, any of them could die, and because he did (or didn't, depending on what happens in the next episode, but the outlook isn't good. What if Alpert could take him to see Smokie like he did Ben?), that might have affected Eloise's visions (telling Penelope in the hospital that for the first time, she didn't know what would happen next).
Absolutely fantastic episode! It kept me on my toes and constantly surprised. Now that the timeline is likely to be followed through, and Daniel's truth about how they are in their own present, though they are in the past, there is nothing else for them to fix.
Jin saved Rousseau from going insane, Dan told Alpert to bury Jughead, Kate and Sawyer saved Ben. After this incident happens, then there's nothing left to fix in the past. The incident is what sets everything in motion, and I still believe that "what happened, happened". I don't think anything's going to be changed.

I think TV hates me lately. They're killing all my fave characters.
I'm really annoyed that no one would listen to Daniel. Wasn't he right about everything earlier this season, with the island jumping through time? Why on earth would Sawyer, then, think he's a nutcase?
Spoiler:
Also, in the promo for next week, Jack's like, "OMG let's do everything Dan's journal says to do!" WTF, he's dead, so NOW you listen to him?
I have nothing else to say, cuz I'm just really really sad about Dan. _________________ icon by becca

Dear Lost 5x14,
Oh, Daniel! I liked you. Yes, even if you were starting to put Jears to shame because of your constant crying (but you did it in a sad puppy!dog kind of way which I really appreciated!
Why did you have to get shot by your own mother, for goodness' sake?! (seriously, you saw that the Hostiles had guns, you fool!)
I really liked your "you can change destiny" speech, too. (But, y'know, I'm a physics idiot - no, really, I am - and even I know that "energy can neither be created nor destroyed" so there might be a little flaw in your idea.)
*sigh* You were a real cutie. And smart. You will be missed. </3
P.S. - DESMOND/PENNY FTMFW!!! OMG, I nearly wanted to jump into the TV screen and kiss Desmond (and Penny) senseless when he said that he had promised to never leave her! ♥
P.P.S. - I don't think Charles Widmore is that bad of a guy. He actually cared about Des's well-being! (And I totally called Dan being his son!)
P.P.P.S. - No Ben in this episode. That just made it 10,000 times better! (Sorry, folks, but I don't like him as a character!)
Truly,
your still perplexed, but slightly entertained, viewer
Maria

ETA: HOW CRAZY IS IT THAT THIS WAS THE 100TH EP?! Feels like just yesterday, I was watching my beloved Season 1 on Wednesdays at 8:00. My goodness, how quickly time flies by! _________________
I'm too upset over Daniel -- and the ridiculous lack of all things Sayid/Sun/Jin/Ben/Locke/Desmond to really give a damn at the moment. I know Jin and Des were in this episode, but only a bit ;__; And I know Ben/Locke have had their own centric episodes, but... IDK. I think I'm just really sad at the moment T__T"
DAAAAAAN. ;________;
Why do Darlton have to kill all the characters I happen to like T__T"...
I should just stop picking favourite characters. Really. Maybe then they wouldn't die _________________

great ep!!!! the pace was really awesome, i was on edge the whole time Great seeing Dan again but his mother is so uber-freaky!!! and DAN!!! *sniffles* his mother's a bitch!!!
Jin finally got some air time!!! I love him! he needs to be in it more!
Methinks Sayid might be with Eloise in the jungle. She's a hostile??? who saw that coming!? So Bad-acting Ellie, was Eloise pointing her gun at her own son....i wonder if she knew back then that's who he was?
Widmore!! man i love Alan Dale he didnt even try to do an English accent this time! it came out so australian to me but i KNEW as soon as Eloise and Dan were talking about the grant that Widmore was Dan's father!!! so he's Penny's brother and little charlie's Uncle...man everyone's related ;P
loved the DesPenny scenes, even tho they were really just bookends for the ep
I dont get why Kate didnt speak up and say something about Claire when they were talking about their options. I dont get why she's keeping it a secret :S:S Then again, no one's mentioned Rose or Bernard or anyone else yet either :S:S:S But at least Jack talked about Aaron! So loved Jack and Kate back tromping through the jungle like the good old days!!!
btw, loved dan's line 'do you have something for a beginner?' loved that, so not everyone on Lost knows how to shoot a gun
"anyone one of us can die." forboding much? _________________

Poor, poor Dan! His mum's a right bitch! lol. Hehe you could kind of tell that Widmore was his father from when he went talking to him, even my mum who was only listening and is completely stupid about theories and remembering stuff even said "Thats his dad" LOL
My only concern about this plan to not crash the plane is that Kate would end up in jail. The only reason she got off lightly was because she 'helped to save' everyone. If the plane doesn't crash the silly old marshall will lock her up _________________

OMG
I'm still in tears That was so tragic poor dan, and I'm gettin pissed at the way they're getting rid of the characters. Especially the way he died it was kinda bittersweet in a way.
The episode was amazing, definatly my fave
The Pen/Desmond scenes were brill!
Love Charles Widmore!
The tension in the quadrangle was funny lol, but getting annoying =/

I was thinking that too!! but not only for Kate, they'd all have pretty rotton lives. Claire would give the baby away, Jin and Sun would never reconcile, Charlie would never get off heroin, Jack and Kate and Kate and Sawyer would never meet, Charlie and Claire wouldn't meet, etc!!
Altho, Sayid would find Nadia and she probably wouldnt die and Boone, Shannon, Ana, Charlie and Libby would live. _________________
Yeah...is Jack really that desperate to forget everything? Kate? Aaron? Juliet?
Even if crashing on a psycho island with a bunch of weird properties and some deaths (both painful and in Nikki and Paulo's case - refreshing), it's not THAT bad. They met new people, made new friends (kinda - if there wasn't so much drama) and they learned things and experienced things to make them stronger as individuals.
This is no ordinary island....for people surviving a plane crash on a NORMAL deserted island is tough....but surviving on one with polar bears, Others, and our beloved Smokie? Jack's really starting to strike me as a whiner this season. He reminds me alot of Locke in Season 2. Locke found his purpose (he thought), then started to go a little nuts right at the end of the season. His faith was shaken. Jack's repeating a similar pattern. His own faith (though a bit different) is shaken...and now he's going a little nuts, trying to change things, much like Locke wanted to stop pushing that button.
Me personally? If I had all this stuff happen to me? I wouldn't want to change the future. I wouldn't want to forget people like Hurley or Claire....and....Sawyer (hubba-hubba) . I wouldn't want to change the experiences because those would've made me who I was today. I think Jack's trying to "fix things" again, and this time, if he were to do it, the results would be catastrophic.
Seriously...I want Locke to morph into Dr. Who, travel to 1977 and lay the pimp hand on Jack, thereby stopping him from doing something so stupid.
