|

I'm wrapping up a Jate vid in time for Valentine's Day ( ) and I"m working on the coloring now. I'm being a little more creative w/ this one than I normally am, so I want a romantic coloring...warm colors, maybe tinges of pink, soft, pretty, bright. I played with the color curve in Vegas and made the colors warm, but I don't know what else to do. A light vignette? I still want the clips nice and bright, but I want them to be a little softer than my normal look. I'd welcome any ideas or even any coloring that someone wants to share!
Kind of like this, but a little less contrast (I like a brighter look): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNLfidUho5E

Omg, I had no idea such things existed (I have experimented with compositing other clips on top of clips, but never with an overlay/texture from a site). Those are all beautiful, but the old paper texture is perfect!!! Thanks so much Kat, I'll credit you if I use it!
Related question--is compositing what you do when you want a strong crossfade effect? Like the first few transitions in this vid:

THANK YOU! I love the paper texture and will probably use it, it's really pretty. _________________ Jen

I see that you found something you like coloring wise, but I just got some new colorings from someone on YT. I'd be willing to upload them for you to use, as long as you credit the original maker of the coloring? I'll give you all the info. Just let me know. _________________

No need to credit me! I just googled the images The way I use textures is by putting them on the top track layer in Vegas and selecting from Compositing Mode either Screen (and then messing with the opacity) or Overlay, they tend to get the best results but try each one if you like, cos they'll give you a different look every time
This is one of my vids that had i think two textures over black and white, to give you an idea:

As far as I know, Compositing (at least in the way I use it with textures) has nothign to do with crossfades. If you have a long fade to black in the clip and use a texture overlay, the video fades to the overlay, if that makes sense. But thats the closest i can think to it affecting the crossfades _________________

Well I still appreciate your help. I wouldn't even have all my Lost clips if you hadn't shown me how. The problem with compositing is, I have Vegas Movie Studio--not Pro, like most people seem to have. So I only have two compositing modes to choose from, and neither are Overlay. So I created a second video track and then lowered the opacity of the texture until I was happy with the look. I hope that serves the same purpose...I hope to upgrade to Pro soon for this purpose!
Wow, that is a beautiful vid! I like the song, too (original and cover). The texture adds a really cool effect. Some clips seem to have color, though--like the one with the fire. Was it total b&w? I usually stay away from pure b&w at least in Lost, because I love love love the beachy colors of the show. But I agree, the b&w especially with the overlay is gorgeous and adds something to the clips. I will try it sometime!

Okay, that makes sense. I guess I see vids with really pronounced transitions, like it doesn't look like a normal crossfade (even a long one). Maybe the vidders are using layers/compositing? I will have to get Pro sometime and figure it all out. I struggle with transitions in general, so I'm interested in improving in that area.
Well thanks for all the help! I'm hoping to submit my vid today or tomorrow, in time for V-day. _________________ Jen

Ahhh, i see, well yeh thats probably they problem with COmpositing Mode in Movie Studio. Ive never had Movie Studio so I don't know if you can get more Comp.Modes or not, but in Pro you have I think about 10. Half of them are useless tho Lowering the opacity is a good backup tho, i still sometimes lower the opacity even if I have a composting mode in place.
Grr, it does to, meant to link you to this one!

Obv it has the colour overlaying, but the bulk it black/white with a pinkish grungey texture But if you don't wanna go total black/white, you can just try lowering the Saturation so it only highlights the reds (there's an effect in Pro that does this for you automatically, i dunno if its in movie studio tho.
You can use a texture/layer as a crossfade, like dragging the texture or the clip heavily into another clip, and then choosing a particular type of transition effect. Again, not sure if you can do that in Movie Studio. _________________

Yeah, I think the problem is Movie Studio. The way it composits makes it look like the clips are smudgey (because of the texture) and the overlay also dims the colors (washes out the colors a bit). I'm sure in Pro, I could change the compositing mode so it wouldn't look like that. I actually PM'd you about Pro, Kat!
I love the coloring in both the vids you linked. I have only recently started coloring at all, so I have a lot to learn...sigh. Luckily, I'm in the right place! _________________ Jen
