windows movie maker keeps freezing on me.
I have 5 entire episodes (.avi format) imported.
It usually happens after I crop a long clip.
is there a better way to do this or am I doing something wrong? |

hey there max... unfortunately this is just a curse that comes with WMM, it's not just you it freezes on everyone you can try downloaded the WMM service pack 2 but I don't find it very helpful. My best advice is just to grit your teeth and bear it.... oh and save often there are many other programs available out there, but they are not very beginner friendly and you have to pay for them (unless you can sneak your way around it )
good luck _________________ Pirates 3 - MAY 25th 2007!!! |

I hear from a very reliable source that this is mainly caused by multiple codecs in the clips one uses. Maybe one of your episodes isn't actually AVI and DIVX You can try seeing the codecs 9and changing them to DIVX if you want them to be the same) with this application:
http://s19.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1VHR9INWUAA9I34OK57G9UQHKR
If that doesn't work. then what I usualyl try and do is render the whole project, start a new project, and import that rendered project and start from where you left off. That should regulate all the files into one, and the bad clip, wherever it is, should be assimilated |

If you really want to know if you have more than one codec, then look at your eps in Media Player. Right-click its name and click properties. It tells you what the audio and video codecs are. Jot 'em down and compare them all. Even though they very well might have the same AVI extensions, the codecs could be totally different.
Codec stands for compression/decompression (or sometimes compressor/decompressor or coder/decoder, just to keep it interesting ). It's basically the mathematical way that a program reduces the size of a project, rendering it into a form that can be uploaded and viewed by other people. It's basically like a short-hand that the programs use. When you get a bunch of different short-hands trying to be read at one time, they start competing. Competing codecs equals WMM springing a sprocket. It freezes up, unable to sort out which codec is to be dealt with first. WMM also can freeze up for other reasons but competing codecs is the most common one.
Gee, you think I've researched this a bit??? I figured if I ever want to get it to freakin' stop doing that, then I needed to understand why it was doing that in the first place.

That "source" of yours sounds fascinating. I bet she's a Sawyer fan. Just a hunch.
Sorry for all the technobabble. I really ought to start a column or something, "Auntie Aislynn's Help For WMM" or "How to kick WMM in the butt enough times to get it to render your dang vid." Hm... What do you guys think?

And if what Warren said hurt your brain, MY post should've come with a warning label, 2 extra-strength aspirins and a teddy bear to hug for comfort, huh?

Hey Everyone. Thanks a lot for your help and all the information about codecs and what not. I ended up starting over with importing the files, and it worked. The .avi files were not the problem, and I'm sorry that I forgot to mention this in my primary post - I actually had some .vob files extracted directly from the DVDs and then renamed .avi. So this time, I didn't import those big files, and that seemed to do it. And I just finished my first video. WooHoo! Now I need to figure out how to minimize the size of it so I can share it. It's currently at 23 MB (5 mins.), and I noticed most other videos are usually no more than 10 MB. What do you guys usually do? |
