Some of these movies are blatantly obvious (Ive skipped The Goonies, Cast Away, Alive, etc.) , others not. These tend to be lesser-known. I was going to make a whole web page about this, but I didnt so (I will be adding to this periodically) and please feel free to add your own! Ill list ones that Ive actually personally SEEN first:

1.) "Cube" (1997, R, not for the weak-stomached). I saw this when it was on SciFi a few years back, and since there have been sequels, but the first was the most poignant.
Its about a seemingly "random" group of people that are locked in a giant puzzle (think inside the little Hellraiser box) and each room that they go to has a new booby trap or way to die. A cop, a doctor, a math whiz, an architect, a magician and a disabled man. Some rooms can be determined to be "safe" through prime numbers, etc. One by one, they fall before the cause, and at the end, it turns out the thing that shouldve been feared the most was each other.

2.) "The Care Bears Movie" (1985, G) Yeah yeah get all your snickers out now. The reason I thought of this movie was because a magician's apprenctice, a boy known as Nicholas, finds an old mystical book among his ters things and it turns out the book is evil and soon controls his will. I thought of this because SOME people on the island seem obsessed with certain objects that seem to control them, that they are willing to do anything for regardless of consequences.

3.) "Identity" (2003, R). Several of us on LVI seemed to instantly think of this movie during the airing of "DAVE". Strangers from all different walks of life: a limo driver escorting a movie star, parents with a young son, a cop transporting a convict, a prostitute, a young couple, and a motel manager are caught up in a nasty rainstorm, stuck at a motel in desolate Nevada. Soon they realize they may be at the motel for another reason when one by one, people start getting killed off. As tensions flare and fingers are pointed, they have to get to the bottom of why they're there. Meanwhile in an undisclosed location, a psychiatrist is trying to prove the innocence of a man accused of murder in an eleventh hour trial. How these two through-lines are related can only be found in Identity. Its about split personalities- hence, Hurley.

4.) "Orca" (1977, R) This came to me during "Outlaws" and "What Kate Did", ala the animalistic element to the show. After witnessing his mate and child's death from Nolan's hands, Orca, the killer whale, goes on a rampage in the fishermen's arbor. Under the villagers's pressure, Nolan, Rachel and an indian sails after the great beast, who will bring them on his own turf.

That, looks awesome.
Is it just gory? Or is it scary too?

Great thread.

5. "Donnie Darko" (2001)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donnie_darko
A teen miraculously avoids certain death by a plane engine, that shouldn't exist, falling into his room with the help of a giant bunny rabbit named Frank that only he can see. He is then told that the world will end a month from then, and we follow him on his journey, seeing things from his point of view and deciding for ourselves whether it's all real, or just the delusions of a crazy kid. Full of time portals, talking creepy bunnies, and plane crashes totally Lost.
And goddammit I have to get around to making this crossover...

6.) Bloodlust! (1961, NR) For those of you "in the know", it was featured on MST3K-

A group of teen-agers vacationing in the tropics take a boat out to a seemingly deserted island. They soon find, however, that the island is inhabited by a wealthy recluse and his staff. While their host is initially hospitable, he quickly reveals his true purpose: to hunt down and kill each of his visitors, as he has done with everyone unlucky enough to set foot on his island.

It was genuinely creepy. And they werent REALLY teenagers, I dont know why it says that.

7.) They Watch (1993, PG-13) I saw this a long time ago and have remained genuinely creeped out by it:

A man (Bergin) that is unable to express himself emotionally, loses his eleven year old daughter in a car accident after missing her performance in a ballet due to his over-ambitious job dictates. Gradually his guilt becomes worse, threatening his relationship with his wife (Mahaffey) and second, younger daughter. He 'stumbles' onto a blind woman (Redgrave) who has the gift of being a seer, as well her country home is occupied with the lost souls of children, including the man's daughter, and he finds himself having to work through his feelings in this setting. This big bird
is there and his daughter roams about until he makes peace with her.

8.) My Little Eye (2002, R)
Five young people apply to live in an isolated house together for six months whilst their every move is filmed by numerous cameras. Each has their reason for wanting to be there - fame, money, adventure. The prize - $1 million. The rules - if one person leaves, everyone loses. It becomes the ultimate morality test.
Just the thing about all those people watching everything they do...kind of reminded me of the "experiment" theories.

9.) Dead End (2003, R) For the past 20 years, Frank Harrington has grudgingly driven his family to celebrate Christmas with his mother-in-law. This year, he takes a shortcut. It's the biggest mistake of his life: The nightmare begins. A mysterious woman in white wanders through the forest, leaving death in her wake. A terrifying black car - its driver invisible - carries the victims into the heart of the night. Every road sign points to a destination they never reach. The survivors succumb to panic, to madness; deeply buried secrets burst to the surface, and Christmas turns into a living hell. If you watch, youll get my point at the end.

AND a cheesy sci-fi from the 50's that I think one of the LOST writers probably saw when they were a kid...and no I have not seen this one:

The Incredible Petrifying World (1957): Four adventurers descend to the depths of the ocean when the cable on their underwater diving bell snaps. The rest of their expedition, believing them to be lost, abandons hope of finding them. Exiting the diving bell, the party finds themselves in a network of underwater caverns. They encounter a shipwreck survivor. He tells them he has been there for 14 years and that there is no way out. The two men in the exploring party believe him only after a hike to a volcanic vent that supplies the caverns with oxygen. On the surface, Prof. Millard Wyman, the elder scientist who designed the original diving bell, decides to try again to explore the depths of the ocean. He finds out that there is another diving bell in existence that is identical to the one that was lost...

Saw:
It's a great thriller and Michael Emerson (our own Benry) is as creepy as ever in it. Even though some of the acting may not be up to our standards I still enjoyed it. I think you guys will too, (if you haven't seen it already)

Thanks for adding to the list! At first, the Jigsaw guy reminded me of a certain someone on LOST that Im not allowed to say anything about (snicker snicker Warren). Saw 3 is the closest Ive ever come to vomiting from a movie- and I love horror movies and have a really strong stomach...they were just beating a deadhorse...er- pig, at that point.

Another I recently saw on AMC:

Five Came Back (1939): Yes its an oldie, but hmmm this premise isnt reminiscent of anything in lost at all!
Twelve people are aboard Coast Air Line's flagship the Silver Queen enroute to South America when the airplane encounters a storm and is blown off course. Crashing into jungles known to be inhabited by head hunters, pilots Bill and Joe race against time to fix the engines and attempt a take off. The situation brings out the best and worst in the stranded dozen as they create a makeshift runway and prepare to escape before the natives attack. But damage to the plane and low fuel reserves means that only 5 people can be carried to safety. Do both Bill and Joe make the flight out? And what about the rest: Peggy, a woman with a slightly tarnished past; Pete, a racketeer who is escorting his boss's young son Tommy; Alice and Judson, eloping lovers who seem to have less in common as their plight changes one of them in the other's eyes; Crimp, who is bringing criminal Vasquez to justice; Prof. and Mrs. Spengler, an elderly couple whom become closer due to their predicament; and finally, is flight attendant Larry among the five? And who decides who lives and dies?

So its kind of like Flight of the Phoenix too. But this has a lot of famous people in it- Lucille Ball, a Carradine.

I second Warren. I too recommend Donnie Darko. There's even a plane crash

1. Capricorn One (1978) - Classic conspiracy tale about the first manned mission to Mars. All appears to be going well until the astronauts are pulled off the ship just before launch by shadowy government types and whisked off to a film studio in the desert.

2. Poseidon Adventure (the original)
3. The Towering Inferno
4. Silent Running. The loner crew member of a spaceship harboring Earth's last nature reserves goes renegade when he is instructed to jettison his beloved forests and return home. Accompanied only by three robots, he ponders the fate of his last pocket of nature and the murders of his fellow crew members in this far-looking speculative film
5. 2001
6. Logan's Run

Logan's Run, based on the 1976 movie of the same name, was a good show. Gregory Harrison was Logan, a Sandman, Heather Menzies was Jessica. A Runner. Runners are people who want to live beyond the age of 30. In the futuristic society that Logan and Jessica live, it's against the law. When you reach your 30th

birthday, you're a dead man, or woman.

Hahaha, Logan's Run.

Allow me to suggest a TV show as well - The Prisoner should be required viewing for folks who watch Lost. A spy attempts to retire, but is kidnapped and taken to a model village which tries to wring his secrets out of him. Classic paranoia tale, and not dissimilar to the whole 'experiment' angle of Lost. Even better, the show only ran for about 20 episodes, so you don't have a lot to watch to get the whole thing. Some distinct tone changes like Lost - Hammer into Anvil is a lot like a switch-around of either Lockdown or Every Man for Himself, and The Girl Who Was Death is roughly similar to Tricia Tanaka is Dead.

The show is from the Sixties, and very British, but it holds up well to this American viewer despite its age and slightly foreign culture.
