"Pills and Soap" 06-16-2006
So it turns out the Others are keeping surveillance on the Losties per the episode ?. What if it went further than just on the island? A video set to the classic Elvis Costello song that is haunted by dictatorships and genocide.
Song: Pills and Soap by Elvis Costello
Vidder: thefilmchick
Length: 2:47 (12.9mb wmv)

I really liked the whole concept of this, 'cause who could put it past the Others to not have been keeping pretty close tabs on Our Gang all this time?

I liked the "camera's eye view" effect and the way it was used to highlight the "non-Others" from the Others... Nice job!

And it has one of my most favorite shots in the vid: the shot of Henry suddenly popping up in the credits at the very end! (Is it wrong to love a bad guy? Probably... )

Over-all, very well thought-out and enjoyable!

Hah, now you've spoiled the ending for everyone.

(Though that is one of the more entertaining parts of the vid, admittedly.)

And kudos for getting the idea behind when, specifically, the camera switches off. It's not that subtle, but it's not made explicitly obvious either, so there you go.

Lyrics, as they're fairly crucial:

Pills and Soap, by Elvis Costello (from 'Punch the Clock,' 1983).

They talk to the sister, the father, and the mother,
With a microphone in one hand and a checkbook in the other.
And the camera noses in to the tears on her face,
The tears on her face, the tears on her face.
You can put them back together with your paper and paste,
But you can't put them back together, you can't put them back together.

What would you say? What would you do?
Children and animals, two by two.
Give me the needle, give me the rope.
We're going to melt them down for pills and soap.
Give me the needle, give me the rope.
We're going to melt them down for pills and soap.

Four and twenty crowbars jemmy your desire:
Out of the frying pan, into the fire.
The king is in the counting house; some folk have all the luck,
And all we get are pictures of Lord and Lady Muck.
They come from lovely people with a hard line in hypocrisy.
There are ashtrays of emotion for the fag ends of the aristocracy.

What would you say? What would you do?
Children and animals, two by two.
Give me the needle, give me the rope.
We're going to melt them down for pills and soap.
Give me the needle, give me the rope.
We're going to melt them down for pills and soap.

The sugar-coated pill is getting bitterer still.
You think your country needs you, but you know it never will.
So pack up your troubles in a stolen handbag.
Don't dilly-dally, boys; rally 'round the flag.
Give us our daily bread in individual slices,
And something in the daily rag to cancel any crisis.

Give me the needle, give me the rope.
We're going to melt them down for pills and soap.

Congrats on the Golden Pick!
This vid is really cool. I like the atmosphere of it and the lil' effects you used here and there, especially the meltin' effect (or as I called it before the "blood running down" effect ).

I really like this bit, too. And Aislynn, there's nothing wrong with loving the bad guy... although I much prefer Sawyer . Henry is a creepy little bastard. The actor (what's his name?) did a great job.

Cool vid, tfc. I loved that whole camera thing, and it's a thing that I think all of us have thought about, that they've been watched throughout their whole lives. And I also really liked the bit with Henry popping up in the end credits.

Very creepy! The song you used was very cool (and oddly, appropriate, as well). I liked the camera effect which added to the spookiness of the vid. Nice work.

Thanks for the comments, all! Once more, the effects aren't my doing.

The camera is 'BFX Sniper Camera 2' and the melting effect (totally not blood! heh) is indeed 'Blood Drip Transition'. So despite my protests of the melting totally not being blood, it appears Kaja was right, unfortunately.

And 'Pills and Soap' is an excellent song for creepiness.

Thanks again, addboy. And thanks for noticing the lyrics/clips link as well. Granted, the verses' lyrics pretty much demand certain shots, but hey.

Nice job with everything in the video. The camera overlay effect worked well with the video. Strangely enough the song was pretty appropriate for the video. Good work all around.

That was really cool - I liked when you had the camera eye thing watching everyone - it made it seem like the others were watching them in The Pearl Station.

Great concept for this video. Despite the very dark lyrics and idea behind this video there were also moments of humor. Very nicely done.

Also, this verse of the song really jumped out at me, not only in relation to the show but also to the current political climate.
The sugar-coated pill is getting bitterer still.
You think your country needs you, but you know it never will.
So pack up your troubles in a stolen handbag.
Don't dilly-dally, boys; rally 'round the flag.

Hee. Thanks, tacoshack, LF4815, and deserted (will not dignify your comment on Me Myself I, though, deserted. ) And yeah, the lyrics are topical. Then again, stuff like Oliver's Army is also - sadly - lyrically topical today. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I didn't particularly intend any humor in the vid, so must ask: Where the heck was it funny?

Pills and Soap is alive again! It is not the best quality, but it's what I have left from years ago, so if anyone is interested in seeing it:

Here it is.
