|
|
I'm a huge fan of the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) here in Europe, and I'm sure that all europeans on LVI have heard of it. Soon the USA will have their own contest like ours, but it's states competing against states.
So I was wondering what you americans feel about it; have you ever heard of the ESC? Do you think it's gonna be fun to see it in a US format? What kind of music do you think will be in the contest?
If you could answer, this would really help me writing a essay in music and would be so thankful!
This article is pretty interesting if you've never heard of it,

I've heard of it! Uh, mostly in the context of "Doctor Who is airing early this week because of the ESC", but yes, I've heard of it. *nods*

Yeah, I think it'll be fun. Hopefully.

...I honestly haven't the faintest. _________________

Go (my temporary home of) Indiana! Home of John Cougar Mellencamp. (And Kurt Vonnegut, but alas, I have never seen a clip of him singing. I am sure the internet has one somewhere...)
Part of me wonders about the fairness of pitting states with low populations (hi Montana and Delaware) against states with half the country in them (my real home of New York, California, Texas, etc.)
And I think the music will be terrible pop pabulum, but I'll save my highhanded music snobbery for another time. Heh. |

Great idea in theory (it's been running how long over there?). I'm just not sure they will do it right... you know US audiences don't know good music until they're told what to like.
I have the feeling it will be too musically restricted (think American Idol but with a Clay Aiken for each state )
But damn, if we can come up with anything close to as good as this..

I hope that American TV will show how Eurovision is over here, maybe show this years finale.
Eurovision celebrated it's 50th anniversary last year! It's been going on for many, many years... now is when it's most popular, and it's getting more and more attention. _________________

I heard that states who are low populated (compared to like, as you said, California etc.) will be put together somehow. I dont think there will be 50 (how many states do you guys have anyway?) songs in a finale, plus all the voting... to much time. Maybe states will be put in pairs, to have like 25 songs.
But then again... we've had the big problem over here that countries vote for their neighbour. Like, Montana giving their highest point to Wyoming. Though, I do think that we're getting away from that.
Personally, I think it's going to be real fun to see how you guys make your own ESC.
Enchirito: so you like Lordi, huh? I loved them, even voted for them - and they won! I was soo happy our Swedish diva Carola didn't win! (she beat my BWO who came second in the Swedish finale, even though they were the best)
But I can tell you - it's soo much fun to see. I love the ESC and our own selection for who's gonna represent Sweden in ESC. All music lovers love it. _________________

How many states? Wikipedia lists:
48 continental states, 2 other states, several other districts etc. (ie D.C.), several overseas insular areas (Samoa, Guam, Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands), a military base at Guantanamo, and one incorporated territory (Palmyra Atoll.)
I couldn't think of the Mariana Islands or Palmyra Atoll, and I knew I was missing something without checking Wikipedia.
Short answer: 50.
Long answer: A little more than 50.
You be the judge. |
