I was just wondering what type of editing progams you guys use?

I use Windows Movie Maker, been using it for a good 3 years.

Well, I think you'll find everyone here will have used WMM before. Some have upgraded to a better programme, some have not.
I'm currently using Sony Vegas. It's more complicated than WMM but it allows a lot more freedom.

Ditto. Though all my movies up until Speed of SOund have been in WMM and I think it has all the features you need if you have the skill to work around them. Vegas is the lazy way to do stuff
(though Vegas does have MUCH nicer picture quality I'll give it that!)

Do you use XML to make new effects on WMM?

Heres some(i've got HEAPS!!) of the ones i have:

Effects-
Contrast Up and Contrast Down
Tinting (blue red green)
Pan up down left right
Zoom in(REALLY FAR)
Zoom out(Until it disapears)
Speed Up-Down 375% and 10%

Transitions-
burn
liquid
water ripple
vacuum


+ heaps more
