Okay I am going to feel like the biggest geek ever right now, so I have to attempt to hold on to my street cred by giving a little backstory.
Save for the Archie and Garfield comic books, I have NEVER laid eyes on a comic or graphic novel of any sort. I have considered reading Whedon's series Fray, but never actually got around to it. But the other day I read someone's review/opinion on a series called "Runaways" and was instantly intrigued by the premise. A group of teenagers discover that their parents are actually supervillians, and as a result they run away and team up in order to combat them.
So I ordered the volume 1 hardcover (about 150 pages) on Amazon and it came in the mail yesterday. I have read through the first couple of substories and I have to say I am very impressed. After ordering it I actually had serious second thoughts. I thought, "how great could a comic book story be?" and "Okay I'm gonna have to give this to Ashley cause I just know I'm gonna hate it." (Ashley=13)
Anyway, I don't hate it. This is partly my reaction to comic books in general and partly my reaction to the story itself I'm sure. But I'm incredibly surprised at how succinctly the story is told and how it actually draws you in. I'm especially surprised at how it can bring you to different kinds of emotional highs and lows with the pictures and very few words. The story itself is quite good so far, although I have trouble keeping their parents apart. But I haven't finished it so I can't exactly give you a complete review. I was just kind of wondering if anyone else was familiar with the series.
Okay, end comic-book-geek-fest. Carry on. |

I actually hadn't posted because of:
1) guilt - I used to be such a happening comic book babe; the local comic book store went out of business when I stopped going there. Need I say more? (I've always felt bad about that, too. I mean, the man had a family to take care of and I just let them all down! )
2) more guilt - I used to be such a happening comic book babe who still kept up with all the new titles and graphic novels coming out, even when I wasn't reading them.
3) um, a little vid called "Stockholm Syndrome" has been sucking the life out of me, what can I say? (Other than it's almost done and I'm going to submit it to the Muse challenge on Monday, hopefully! Yay, now I can shut up about it! )
4) Okay, adding 4 is stretching it.
Back on point, though I think that the premise sounds very interesting and it's definitely something that I would've checked out. In fact, I'll go check it out right now (gotta love Amazon!).
No worries, KC, your street cred is firmly in tact. Mr. Eko will whack the first person who says differently!
