The main difference between them is the price. Vegas Movie Studio is the "stripped down" version of Vegas Pro, so it's missing a few things. It can do about 90% of what the full version can but is missing the masking track in the pan/crop tool (which lets you do a custom mask), it doesn't have any useful track compositing (for doing textures), and you can't individually raise the volume on each clip (you can lower it but not raise it ). Those are the main things it doesn't have that I wish it did. However, I'm extremely grateful for the other billion things it CAN do!

Here's how Sony's site compares them

Really, in my honest opinion, the only reason to go with Movie Studio is if you can't afford the Pro version. If you're able to get the full Vegas Pro, then definitely go for it. If price is an issue, then I've found Movie Studio to be a million times better than Windows Movie Maker, which was my only other option. But, if I were able, I would definitely go with the Pro version.

Also, something worth mentioning: I know of at least 2 people so far who've had quite a bit of trouble with Movie Studio 9.0, sad to say. It doesn't seem to be a very stable version, takes a long time to render, has issues opening files, that sort of thing. Which is a total bummer and a terrible shame because my Movie Studio 6.0 has been just awesome. Just something to consider!

just to add, i have sony vegas movie studio platinum 9, and coming from trying to make videos on wmm2, naturally its wayyy better. ive only had it for like 2 wks now, and at first it was really hard for me, i was having trouble importing stuff from dvd shrink and it would crash etc and it was a headache, but now suddenly everythings working out and im starting to figure things out. its a great program imo so far once you start to know what youre doing. i got movie studio because i didnt want to spend all that money for pro, but of course if pro were given to me, i'd upgrade in a heartbeat just because of masking, having things like the sin city isolating color effect, and compositing for textures. oh and it is annoying that you can only have 4 video tracks where as pro lets you have unlimited. but yea, overall, for the price its great and like aislynn said it has 90 percent of what pro does.

oh and maybe movie studio alone doesnt have the individual volume option, but platinum does. there are a couple of things movie studio platinum has that regular movie studio doesnt so id recommend going with the highest movie studio if youre going to get it.

Oh, that's very cool to know, thanks! I haven't seen platinum in action, so to speak, so I didn't know that!

Also, since I haven't seen the later version of either regular Movie Studio 9.0 or the platinum version, I should start qualifying that as such whenever I give my opinion, because it some of those things that aren't in 6.0 might have been added in to the newer Movie Studios, you never know! Thanks again!

Anyway, I definitely agree, get the "highest" version you can; if not Pro, then the platinum version of Movie Studio.
