Ok so I use Vegas 8.0 pro which opens up .avi without any problems. However, yesterday when I opened a clip, there was only the image and no sound...since I needed the sound, I decided to use the FourCC Code Changer. Now, the problem is that not only did it not work (there is no image and no sound), but no matter what I try, I can't seem to reverse it (meaning that I can't go back to the way the clip used to be before I applied the FourCC).
Anybody know how to remove it...without having to uninstall the entire program?

Oh, I hope somebody has better news for you than I do because I had a bit of trouble with the Four CC code changer (it turned my footage upside down and backwards  and also wouldn't let it open in Vegas anymore). I couldn't get it to change it back where it was usable ever again but fortunately I had decided to make a copy of my footage first and try the code changer on that. So then I just deleted the ruined copy and still had my original untouched.  I don't know of any way to undo what the changer has already done, even if you removed the Four CC program. 
And by the way, what I do when I need the sound off of an .AVI is to open it in Windows Movie Maker and save the clip I need there as a .WMV, then import that into Vegas and take the audio off of it there. It's a little more work but even with the code changer, a lot of times I can't get the sound and the picture at the same time with .AVI in Vegas.
Boy, I just had all kinds of good news, huh?  Sorry! I hope somebody else has a better answer for you! Otherwise, will you be able to get another copy of your footage again? |

If you don't have the proper codecs installed it will not display certain videos properly.
Codec is an abbreviation for "compression/decompression". When you rip a video from a DVD or record off the TV the raw .avi file is huge (probabaly around 1GB or higher depending on the length). In order to save space, they must be compressed to a smaller file size. So, authors will use whatever compression they feel most comfortable with. There are tons of compression rates and tons of codecs that read them. So, if you use FourCC to change the compression value, and you don't have the proper codec that will read/display it, then its not going to work.
*side note: Just because a file states its an .avi does not mean that vegas can read it. There a many ways to compress .avi (DivX, XviD, Mpeg2, Mpeg3, Mpeg4, ect).
My advice would be to download codec packs for your PC because when you download these episodes from somewhere and not rip them from DVD, you have no idea what compression the author used. With a pack, you have all bases covered.

(both for Windows, not sure about MAC)
I have both these installed and both work fine. If this doesn't help then it has something to do with your actual Vegas installation. If its an official copy, I would suggest calling for support. If its not, then there's nothing you can do aside from your own detective work on Google to see if anyone else had similar issues. You have to understand that with pirated software, you are going to run into snags no matter what because the programming was altered a little.

I already do have all the right codecs, but upon closer inspection, it seems that it's the episode itself that was badly encoded (it's pretty old). It's too bad because I wanted to do a Battlestar Galactica vid, but I was missing a few episodes (my brother lent our dvds to a friend who has yet to return them grrr).

I'm feeling very tempted to take those codec packs you mentioned, Steph! Does that mean then I'd be likely to be able to get both the audio and video from an .AVI in Vegas? And that maybe Vegas will stop doing wonky things like removing the peaks from the song I use in the vid? That's very annoying! It only does that when I use .AVI and after I've worked on the project for several days, then all of the sudden my song has no peaks anymore! *pouts* I never realized how much I used them for my beat use until I can't see them anymore!  I've tried re-encoding the song back and forth from .MP3 to .WMA and that'll fool it for one time into putting the peaks back, then the next time I open the project... no peaks. So that would be awesome if that might possibly make it where I could use .AVI and still have the peaks in my song! *can barely dare to dream*
The main reason why I'm cautious about adding new codec packs... Is it possible to remove them if they don't work right? When DivX updated their codec, I took the new version without thinking about it but it would no longer let me import .AVI into Vegas OR WMM! Luckily I still had the previous version so I was able to uninstall the new and reinstall the old and that's still what I'm using. I just want to know if I have a way "out" should one of these packs do the same thing, you know? Thanks so much for all of your help!

Yes! ^__^ They can uninstalled if you install them. Just like you would any program. And they even allow you to turn certain ones off if they are causing trouble. I really like that feature because ffdshow really ticks me off sometimes.
They might help with the Vegas issues but sometimes it's just Vegas being temperamental. But it's defintely worth a try. My suggestion would also be to make a restore point just in case though. It's hard to tell with compies sometimes, they are all different. I just remember one day, suddenly, my videos wouldn't play right anywhere (they had been fine for as long as I could remember and I hadn't done anything different). They were skipping frames and sputtering, then freezing up. It was like watching a car die, it was sad. So, I went on Google and found the CCC pak which fixed it. All the same codecs as K-lite yet it fixed it. I have no idea why either.
hehe yep Erin, I'm still around. I'm in college right now so I don't get online as often as I would like to. |

Just wanted to say that I was able to fix my problem yayyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!
I downloaded a program called All to avi, which as the name says, converts everything into avi. My faulty episode was already an avi, but with the program I was able to reencode it.
The program also converts .mkv into .avi, so I'm double happy. |
