Okay, it's been almost a week and I haven't been able to work on any vids...and I'm going insane.
I used a program to "convert" all my .avis so that I can open them in Vegas, however, every time I drag a clip into the timeline, Vegas freezes and crashes, and truthfully, I'm far too confused by Vegas to enjoy vidding entirely with it.
It's been suggested to me, since I'm having a problem with WMM that causes it to crash as soon as I open it, that I reinstall WMM over top of the current version. I'm totally cool with doing that, but...I went to Microsoft.com and I can NOT find a download of it. Where can I find a download of Windows Movie Maker's newest version...? I miss vidding too much! _________________ avatar: Plastic!Winchester Theater by anteka @ LJ; icon by me

Okay, excuse me while I go smack Microsoft.
*smack*
Part of the problem is the fact that Vista has just been released which means that XP and WMM 2 are no longer the current versions of the Windows OS (Vista comes with WMM 3). So now MS is going to try to strong-arm the world into upgrading from XP to Vista.
Anyway, I went through all of my old WMM links and indeed you're right, they've removed the separate download option for WMM 2. You either have to completely reinstall the SP2 or it just blithely tells you to turn the Automatic Updates on and you'll get WMM 2 if you don't have it. Well, DUH! If you have it but it's broken, then the Auto-updates won't install it for you again because to it, you already HAVE WMM 2. Even if it doesn't work.
*frustrated*
It sounds like the only option it's leaving you is to roll back to the SP1, then install the SP2 again. OY! I'll poke around and see if I can find out anything else before you have to do something drastic like that!
*smacks Microsoft again*
Something that concerns me though is the fact that both WMM and Vegas are crashing when you try to work with them. That still sounds like a deeper problem than a reinstall can fix since it's affecting two separate video editing programs.
Will Vegas work if you import something that's already .WMV? If nothing else, feel free to import one of my vids and see if you can get it in the trimmer, cut something out and put it on the timeline and work with it without Vegas freezing. If you can, then it might just be a problem with the conversion process. Also, it's possibly that you're missing a codec somewhere. That's something that will mess with all editing programs. Do you have the DivX package installed?
Sorry I always come with more questions than answers! *big hugs* |

Ok hmm. With Vegas, I'm able to import the episodes, and drag them to the trimmer, cancel the building of peaks, and make subclips just fine. it's when I move the subclips to the timeline that it freezes. It only crashed one time, but I get too tired of it taking an hour and "not responding" so I use the Task Manager to close it out.
Let me try to do the same thing with a .wmv I have here...
That works just fine. So, then is it a codec issue? I have:
Divx
K-Lite Codec Pack
Main Concept MPEG Encoder
If I'm missing something, definitely let me know so I can get it downloaded and installed!
Either that, or someone's going to have to be a total saint and upload every episode of Lost, Dexter, and Dead Like Me in .wmv form for me, since I can't convert on my own with WMM... _________________ avatar: Plastic!Winchester Theater by anteka @ LJ; icon by me

You know what's WEIRD, Jen. I have a very similar problem.
.AVI just WILL NOT work in my WMM. I just recently downloaded 3.01 and I was so thrilled, but when I went to import it into WMM, it didn't import. Meanwhile, for the short time that I had Vegas installed (I'm like you - it looked too complicated and my computer really can't handle another program), my .AVI Dead Like Me files were easily imported into Vegas (even more so when I used the Four CC Changer thingy). Even weirder, is that the clips I download from Youtube convert into automatic .avi files. But THOSE import into WMM. Granted, I have to convert them to .wmv because WMM doesn't splice them correctly, but still...
I f*cking hate Bill Gates. He makes crappy programs...
Let me know how everything works out. Maybe I can learn something from it too... _________________

Nope that should be about every codec you should ever need...
*makes a frowny face*
I always end up converting anything AVI into WMV with WMM (gee, could I find a few more 3 letter abbreviations? ). The only time I tried working with AVI in Vegas, it caused that weird "every new clip you add to the timeline becomes the first clip on the timeline as well" thing. But if WMM can't get the job done now...
*brain explodes*
I don't know why my WMM handles AVI okay (though everything tends to render with the "Godzilla Effect," the audio slides off by a few seconds so that the audio follows the video. At least it's easy enough to correct in Vegas because you can separate the audio and video on a clip and just nudge it back in place) when it gives a lot of people trouble!
I've been off researching before I finished this post but I haven't come up with anything very promising. *SIGH* I'll definitely keep looking, though! *big hugs* |

Ok well, I found a download link, although it isn't from Microsoft.com so I'm going to have to scan it to make sure there aren't any nasties hiding in it before I install it. I've also just created a system restore point to go back to just in case.
Windows Movie Maker 2
Posting that in case anyone else out there in LVI land feels like they want to try re-installing WMM over their current version.
I'll keep ya posted, Ais. _________________ avatar: Plastic!Winchester Theater by anteka @ LJ; icon by me

Eeeee!
Jen and Aislynn, I think I've figured out how to solve WMM's latest emotional breakdown.
So to recapitulate, .AVIs would not be imported into WMM because, as we all know, WMM is a stubborn idiot.
Now, here comes the solution ...
I tried this on my computer with my 3.01 "A Tale of Two Cities" AVI ep and it imported, so I hope it works for everyone else.
Okay, now is everyone familiar with the FOUR CC CHANGER, correct?
Open that baby up, browse through your files, select the episode in question. Then, change both the two XVID on top, to DIVX. Click apply.
Then, importation should be able to take place! (hopefully!)
Gee, I feel like I'm writing an instruction manual. _________________
