Hi!
So... this is sort of a weird question, I know... but is having the right song more important than great editing?
I've seen some videos that were basically just clips strung together to a really great song, with little to no interesting editing or effects, and full of flaws like trapped frames, excessive use of talking clips, and messy audio clips, but none-the-less were really really popular. Likewise, I've seen some that were also just clips strung together, with not a lot of interesting editing or effects, but were flawlessly edited and had no obvious flaws or mistakes, yet seemed to be not nearly as popular as some of the others. The only reason I could see for this is that often (not always) the song was obscure or maybe a little unusual sounding.
It got me to wondering, are people more likely to enjoy a video with a song they recognize or that is from a popular group or style?
I'm just trying to understand the general consensus on this so I can make good song choices in the future.

In my case, I just choose the song that inspires me to make a really cool vid. I find that the songs that work the best for me are the ones that, when I hear them they remind me of a certain character or ship and a vid just starts to form itself in my head. lol I don't worry about how popular the song is per say, I do however check LVI to see if a lot of other vidders used the same song for the same ship. 
So to answer your question, I think everything counts. The song obviously has to make sense with the clips you use, and the editing doesn’t have to be flawless, but it still has to be somewhat good. As for song choice, I think that it depends on the person's taste who is watching your vid, keep in mind not all popular songs make great lost vids. I sometimes find myself enjoying more of the vids that feature songs that I've never heard of, rather than the ones that I hear every day on the radio. It gives the viewer a chance to hear new music. I can't tell you how many songs I've downloaded 4 my ipod, after hearing them in a vid on here and fallen in love with them. But don't get me wrong I enjoy the vids featuring popular songs too.
Sorry for rambling. What I'm trying to say is, go with your gut. Pick the song that inspires you and run with it. Don't worry about pleasing every viewer, every time, because that is just not gonna happen. There will always be someone who may not like your vids, on the other hand there will be a tun of people who will love them. You'll drive yourself crazy if you worry about what everyone else thinks all the time. Just have fun!!!

Yep! I agree with Morgan....I just use whatever song inspires me and I don't worry about the viewers too much...just vid the way you want to vid and have fun!

GREAT topic!!!!
For me i like picking songs that havnt been done much before. Or ill take a song already used and ut a spin to it. I think a unique song that can relate to a character can surpas sloppy editing allot of the times. There was a video on here this summer, using a very obscure Pink Floyd song. The editing wasnt anything to gawk about but just the fact that the guy used such a cool, obscure song, and made it work with the clips, sold it in my mind. As for popular songs. No, i dont like 20 jate or skate vids to the hottest new Kelly Clarkson song. I dont think you should base your song choices on popularity, just how much they work with the story your trying to tell. |

Yeah, I agree with everyone here
I think it does help to have a great song with your video but that doesn't necissarily mean that it's the newest song out. It could be something no ones ever heard before and I find that alot of the times that unpopular songs work alot of the time. I sometimes think aswell if the song has been used so many times on videos it can also kill the song aswell if it's just the same what everyone else has been doing you need to add your own originality to it to not make it 'oh another one of those videos to that overdone song' |

I'm usually trying to do both: picking a song that hasn't been used before *and* that inspires me to come up with good ideas. I need to feel good about the song, I need to kinda "see" the scenes I'd use in the vid when I listen to the song.
I absolutely agree with Morgan: Don't worry too much about pleasing all of your viewers... it's impossible and it will take away the fun of making vids. Don't be afraid to use unknown songs or come up with unsual ideas. You know, from most vids you *can* tell whether the vidder enjoyed making this vid and was inspired and motivated or not.
With my own vids, I had all sorts of expierences. How It Ends is possibly the strongest example... some people told me that they hated the song, but enjoyed my vid. Others said that they never heard the song before, but that they instantly fell in love with it. It is a very unusual song, but when I was working on the vid, I didn't really care about what the people would think. I felt so positive about the song and that made working on the vid so easy and so enjoyable.
So yeah, what I'm basically trying to say is that it is important that you are having a good time while working on your vids and that the song inspires you and that the lyrics give you good ideas. Don't waste too much time worrying about what people will think about your vid. I actually even found so many great new singers and bands through fanvids that I probably wouldn't have discovered through any other way.

I'm really enjoying the answers in this thread. It definitely makes me feel better about past song choices and gives me confidence to choose new ones. I'm the same way, about having to hear a song and see the video playing in my head first.
I really enjoy the more unusual songs, especially when it does introduce me to a new singer/band. That's the best part!!!

When I make videos, I really don't worry about whether people like it or not. I make videos purely for the FUN of it. I am not as serious about it as some people here. I make vids to please myself. I try to stay away from songs that have been used a million times, but if I hear a song and think it would make an awesome video and I haven't seen a video using it before, I'll make it. I also don't worry about the miniscule details. If I'm working on a vid and it looks good except this one tiny thing that would be more trouble than it's worth to fi, I leave it. If that detail's the difference between getting a silver and a gold, then...sucks for me, but as long as I like a video I've made, I'm good.
I like all the videos I have on here. If I make a video and end up not liking it, it's not on LVI. That's why there are more vids on my Youtube account than there are on here, because I ended up not liking those.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, just have fun with it. In the end, I think all that really matters is if you like a vid you've made and if it's good by your standards. It takes awhile to get as good as some of the vidders on LVI, and it won't happen overnight. ^_^ Just keep making vids, enjoying yourself, and as you do that and watch other people's vids, you'll get better as well.

I know it is for trailer, not to mention if ur using instrumental, u really need to find tunes that fit the character. For me its the hardest part, thats why I can take up to months to finish one vid. The editing is only as strong as the song itself.

that is tough question. for ex. It happens that I have quite weird taste in music, so I usually using smth that not many people know, or what not that popular/hits  lol But that is just because I like this type of music, and not very into popular nowdays bands (well I have a few I like, but not too many). IMO the song choice totally not that important as the editing itself. Unique song can make your video a bit more special from the others, but totally only editing make it worth watchetable..for me the most important, you must like/be into the song you are vidding. I never can vidding on smth that I hate. Because it totally will be visible in my work  ....but still, for ex. I think I practically can watch every fan video which was done with OneRepublic's "Apologise", here I can't be rational 'cause I can't get enough of this song yet , but just the thing is, that if the editing would't touch me I will never leave a feedback. So the editing is totally more important than the song choice, at least for me. I have seen so many great vids, that have songs in which I personally not into and they are overused as well, but they totally was worth to watch, 'cause the editing was perfect  .
