I think MoreLight nailed it. That's exactly what I like in videos and what I look for. Song choice is huge for me as a fan and simple viewer, that's been the hardest part joining the council; having to sit through videos that use songs that I don't care for. But I promise I'm not letting song choice be a part of any decision making process that I do.

But yeah, nice post MoreLight.

I agree with what all has been said above: there's nothing like seeing a vid that surprises you with a really tightly told story or brings to light something you've never thought about a character before.

However, I'm on the golly-gee-amateur side of the vid-making fence, so I can admit that I like vids with cool transitions and/or effects. Now, I'm sure that the LVI council and all of you experienced vidders are sick to death of them, especially after you've seen a million or so vids that are basically all freaky transitions linking random clips set to a song that has no collective meaning. I'm certainly not saying that transitions or effects alone should be what carry a vid. But when you get a vid that's already good on its own and you add the nifty-neato stuff to it... Well, unsophisticated neophyte that I am, I dig it!

A vid I think that's a good example is Jake's "Sawyer - Lake of Fire." Now, that's just one awesome vid, IMO! I've watched it over and over again, just totally tripping out over the use of black and white and color. So cool!

One reason why this probably tickles me so is the fact that all I have to work with is the Service Pack 1 version of WMM (motto: "Transitions? We don't need no stinkin' transitions! Or titles! Or control over clip speed! Or..." ), so anything more than a simple fade is beyond me. I'm always fascinated by what cool things you real vidders come up with! You guys rock!

LOL. Surely you jest? Well, I'm very pleased to hear you enjoyed it, but I think it's more to the effect that you enjoy Sawyer.

That video is my least favorite. Though the effect used is a cool effect, it serves no real purpose or meaning within the video. I also think I pushed the voice overs a bit further than needed to be done. The ones in the end are cool, but the ones in the front half are a little much. And some of them didn't come through too clear.

However, with your aforementioned (there's that English degree shining through) affection for transitions and effects, I can see how you would like said video, and as stated before, I thank you for the praise.

I think the reason I don't like that video as much as the others is that I typically take a "less is more" approach to making my videos. I think I was trying too hard on that one.

But yeah, I'll shut up now.

for me, effects and transitions are usually a plus unless they are used too often or in a stupid place. Some vids I've seen lost my vote in part because they didn't use effects, or not enough, so the piece looked too choppy. But then again, this is me, the overload of black fades
that all said, a heart effect = DEATH BY STRANGLING LOL, especially when EVERY clip change is one of those.... *shivers*

the effects on that are absolutely superb, and weren't that overdone or anything either. But like Jake said, it only didn't quite make it (and I say quite because it was a very close vote) because they didn't realyl have a purpose but to look cool, at least as far as I/we saw... just didn't tie in to the video.
But anyone who thinks that effects like that just take it too far, don't. They're awesome, and any really well done or inventive ones can buy you that ticket, that is, if they're used so they have a purpose...

I might not have guessed that the effects had no purpose, had Jake not already said it on lost-media before I judged them You brought it on yourself dude! lol!

I would personally absolutely love to see that effect used Kill Bill-style in an action piece... or... what was that called again Jake, that superhero trailer thing you showed me? well either way, it could be friggin awesome... red and yellow, red and yellow

No, seriously. I went back and watched it again and yes, there is an itty-bitty-eensy-weensy bit of "it wouldn't matter to me if it was a vid of Sawyer reading the phone book-ness" in play here. But... It still is just a cool looking vid. Sorry, but you can't change my mind on that!

The thing about the voice-overs that may have bugged you is probably something that I learned from making my (in)famous audio adventure, "Toxic Elvish" (Britney Spears meets car-racing Hobbits -- what? you've never heard of it? How strange... ). Anyway, I loaded the audio clips waaaay too heavy the first couple of tries, until I realized that they work the best when you have a generous span of music to drop them into, where they're not competing against the singing for the listener's ear. That may be why you like the v.o. at the end (over the instrumental) more than the ones in the song itself.

Or maybe not. Just giving you a bit of my vast (cough-cough ) audio clip experience here, completely unasked for but totally free of charge!

Anyway, I respect that, as the vid's creator, you have the right to not be happy with it. However, I'd love to see you take a stab at making another vid with this same effect technique but with whatever you feel was missing from this vid. I'd be tempted to try it myself, except for the small fact that I'm using the Service Pack 1 version of WMM and it would laugh at me if I asked it to alter the color of the vid clips. Then it would blow up. So, you see, my nefarious master plan for taking over the world through vidding (uh, you guys have one of those master plans, too, right? ) keeps getting derailed by stunted software.

Though it's probably best I don't have access to something cool like Premiere along with the entire episodes at my disposal, because I'd end up inundating LVI with flashy, sparkly, singing, dancing, twirling, golly-gee-whiz-bang, multimedia extravaganzas. It would just be scary.

That effect was accomplished using something that is both in Premiere and After Effects called Leave Color. Simply put (cause it can get confusing using the Adobe jargon) you tell Premiere what color you want to stay and then it removes everything else. It doesn't always come out perfect, or even good. The clips that it didn't work on became simply black and white clips.

Since Jake mentioned it, colours start to become important in my book or is something I start to really pay attention to while vidding Alias 'Walk the walk' and since three or four vids I worker harder on the subtle part of changing colours throughout a vid. And colour was a key element in my latest vid. Don't get too excited, it is not Lost, but to Veronica Mars and should be up by tomorrow.

But inking scenes to tie scenes further together or as a element you use to get your audience focussed on one emotion throughout a vid is cool. A really great example for this is 'Rattlesnake Smile'. The use of red, blue and orange to drag the viewers deeper into the subconsciousness of the character just *works* very effectiv.

And B/W is always a good tool, perfected in 'Shadow of the Sun', the way the flashbacks are in all shades of B/W, stained further with different filters connect you with the vid and at the same time, you get a visual break which supports the lyrics, emotions and give you as a viewer a very clear feeling, what belongs together, what the character connects in his mind with the current events and how his past redefine itself on the Island and the filters really give you the rearview mirror feeling.

So yes, I like the skilled use of colour in general in vids.

I think I've figured it out, Sawyer vids are for those people who are absolute geniouses, who put in hours and hours of work on using those beautiful effects. Charlie videos are those that are usually the first thing to be attempted by the newbies, but can still be perfected. Jack and Kate ones are the medium between the two, and then the rest are for those too original to do any of the others! LOL

Hobbes, you find a patter here, I wouldn't bet on...

But can't totally disagree either! Because most of the Charlie or C/C vids send me in the WTF?-mode! And Sawyer is pretty and hot and both when he suffers, is wet, shows of skin or looks emotional tortured, gives insults and is an asshole. So yeah, I can usually sit even through a bad Sawyer vid without getting any spasm, which also makes it easy to work long hard hours on a vid, when you think about. Because hey, he's a pretty picture even when you are ready to kill your editing programm, so you won't quit, because he's there! *insert fan-girl squeel - not*

And Jack kinda gets boring with Kate, when he's not pissed at something Sawyer said or did. Staring blankly into the ocean doesn't give you the same vibe, then coming naked out of it with a wicked grin. That's me speaking as a woman.
