|
|
Quote: | Ning, the service that lets anybody create a social network on any topic, is undergoing some big changes. The company, which hosts 2.3 million social networks, says that it will shut down its free version and require network creators to either switch to a paid plan or leave Ning. It’s also laying off forty percent of its staff. |

Unfortunately, this will impact vidders who have been using any of the Ning-based networks like Namaste Nikki Town, BAM Video Vault or Showyourvids, to name a few, if those networks don't make a payment when Ning switches completely over from a free service to a pay one.
This is the word from BAM:
Quote: | Ning has decided to do away with the free networks and switch all to premium. Justin and I won't be able to keep the site alive if a payment is involved, so sadly enough, BAM will be closed when Ning makes it's final switch. I hope you all can find some different video homes - and it's a shame to see this site go down in flames when we have made such an impact on the vidding community. I'm so incredibly sorry guys.

I'm not sure exactly when BAM and any of the other free Ning networks will be closing but if you're using any of them as your only hosting place for any of your Lost vids, we recommend you finding an alternate place for it before your vid links are then broken.
This is really a bummer. But hopefully, just as the Ning networks appeared around the time that Imeem booted vidders off their site, then there will be another free streaming alternative to Youtube pop up. *fingers crossed* |

Lame. Is it possible those communities and LVI could pool fiscal resources somehow? If a paid plan comes via concentrated donations of the Lost vidding community (or the vidding community at large) and if paid plans can keep the videos hosted for free, it'd more easily stand a chance of being supported if the money was kept on one network. What are the costs involved?
Barring that, it is possible via cPanel/Ruby on Rails/etc. to set up a video hosting site fairly easily, but there are a host of other things involved in actually owning the site for video hosting I don't want to personally touch. If anyone needed tech help in that arena, I'd be willing to offer my time this summer, provided it was solely an LVI resource. _________________ I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's. Yeah, the legal ramifications of actually hosting vids ourselves was something Lostcalier and Enchirito (the site founders and original admin and webmaster respectively) looked into back at the start. LVI actually predates Youtube and many of the other free hosting places out there, so back In The Day, you just about had to have your own website to host your vids on or use something like Yousendit, which expired in 7 days.
So they looked into if it was feasible to try to host the vids on LVI, which quickly proved impossible as more and more vids came in. But even more so was the fact that if LVI is actually hosting the vids, then we much more susceptible to being shut down or sued than we are as a site that lists vids but does not actually host them.
Anyway, I had a look at Ning directly and it seems like May 4, 2010 is when they are going to tell their new pricing plans and such.

I'd imagine that's also when they'll be shutting down the free service but I haven't confirmed that yet. |

So: Should we decide which one to pool resources towards, in the event it becomes necessary? If it's a question of, say, 10 people tossing $10 at the problem for permanent availability, I'd be willing to chip in (especially as Youtube likes to mute Elvis Costello and Warren Zevon), but, like I said, as there are multiple sites out there, we should decide which one gets the money, so we're not spreading our resources too thin. _________________ I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's. I'm on Namaste Nikki Town as well--would be willing to toss a tenner at them. Would you, Nikki? I think if we can get ten people to cover, we should be covered, but since apparently they haven't posted the rates yet... _________________ I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's. A message to all members of Namaste Nikki Town
Now that we have hit 108 members for our town. Im glad to say that I have re-newed our network for a few years! I know some of you have emailed me that NING is undergoing some changes and nothing will effect our great community of people.
I created this for all of us to place our video's and talk with all of our friends...
I know many of us will continue to make LOST ad's even after the show had ended...This is a open vidding source for all songs, Vids and anything LOST!!!!
HUGS- Nikki

Oh, that's AWESOME news about Namaste Nikki Town! Thanks for letting us know, Nikki!
I wasn't anticipating any of the vidding networks there being able to pay the fee! BAM, obviously, already said they can't and Showyourvids has been rather abandoned by the creator from what I've heard. I believe there are a couple more vidding networks but I couldn't recall their names...
I'm not a member at Namaste Nikki Town yet so I can't see the announcement directly. Does it accept vids other than Lost or is it only for Lost vids? |
