I think he killed Ana Lucia so he could let Henry (freaky 'Others' leader guy who has no name) go back to The Others' camp. And probably so the losties would get pissed off and try and find The Others. Libby was a mistake though, he even said it himself and his facial expression when he shot her was an obvious sign that it was an accident.

Meh, I probably would've done the same...not if I had a son like Walt though, Walt annoys the hell outta me.
Besides, this made Michael so much more interesting.
