If they're "real" subtitles, you should be able to turn subtitles off on any media player, but if they're part of the video I don't think you can take them off.

I use Ulead VideoStudio 9, which you can get a free trial of at download.com

I've also used WMM2.

For dvd ripping, well, I've ripped and encoded alot of them, and I use DVD Decryptor and Flask_M ...

I love WinAvi converter. I especially like it for encoding vcds, but it also converts to avi, wmv, etc.

if you want a high quality version, you can try saving as svcd format, or go to custom and click "options" to select your dimensions and whatnot.

I really like it. It's easy to use, but more flexible, and much more stable than WMM.
