OK. Everyone knows I like Zevon. A couple of songs that might inspire people (one ensemble, two Sawyer, one Sayid):
Disorder in the House (Ensemble)
02 Disorder in the House.wma - 4.26MB
It was the 'sundown through the portiere' line that got me thinking about this as an ensemble, driving home last night. I really think it would fit well, though!
Quote:
Disorder in the house: The tub runneth over
Plaster's falling down in pieces by the couch of pain
Disorder in the house: Time to duck and cover
Helicopters hover over rough terrain
Disorder in the house: Reptile wisdom
Zombies on the lawn staggering around
Disorder in the house: There's a flaw in the system
And the fly in the ointment's gonna bring the whole thing down
The floodgates are open; we've let the demons loose
The big guns have spoken and we've fallen for the ruse
Disorder in the house: It's a fate worse than fame
Even the Lhasa Apso seems to be ashamed
Disorder in the house: The doors are coming off the hinges
The earth will open and swallow up the real estate
I just got my paycheck; I'm gonna paint the whole town grey
Whether it's a night in Paris or a Fresno matinee
It's the home of the brave and the land of the free
Where the less you know the better off you'll be
Disorder in the house: All bets are off
I'm sprawled across the davenport of despair
Disorder in the house: I'll live with the losses
And watch the sundown through the portiere
Gambler ambled down a country lane, looking for a game of chance
She was twenty-one or two and she knew what she wanted
And she wanted that gamblin' man
Her parents warned her, tried to reason with her
She was determined that she wanted Bill
They'd all be offended at the mention still
If they heard this song, which I doubt they will
And my mama couldn't be persuaded
When they pleaded with their daughter, "Don't marry that gamblin' man"
Mama couldn't be persuaded
When they pleaded with their daughter, "Don't marry that gamblin' man"
Mama couldn't be persuaded
When they pleaded with her - No, no nevertheless
I said my mama couldn't be persuaded when they pleaded with her,
"Daughter, don't marry that gamblin' man."
Gambler tried to be a family man, though it didn't suit his style
He thought he had him a winning combination
So he took us where the stakes were high
Her parents warned her, tried to reason with her
Never kept their disappointment hid
They all went to pieces when the bad luck hit
Stuck in the middle, I was the kid
And my mama couldn't be persuaded...
Dirty Life and Times (Sawyer)
01 Dirty Life and Times.wma - 3.01MB
Another obvious one. Zevon works really well for Sawyer (there are another couple that are Sawyerish (Mr. Bad Example!) that I'm either saving or working on at the moment):
Quote:
Some days I feel like my shadow's casting me
Some days the sun don't shine
Sometimes I wonder what tomorrow's gonna bring
When I think about my dirty life and times
One day I came to a fork in the road
Folks, I just couldn't go where I was told
Now they'll hunt me down and hang me for my crimes
If I tell about my dirty life and times
I had someone 'til she went out for a stroll
Should have run after her
It's hard to find a girl with a heart of gold
When you're living in a four-letter world
And if she won't love me then her sister will
She's from say-one-thing-and-mean-another's-ville
And she can't seem to make up her mind
When she hears about my dirty life and times
Some days I feel like my shadow's casting me
Some days the sun don't shine
Sometimes I wonder why I'm still running free
All up and down the line
Gets a little lonely, folks, you know what I mean
I'm looking for a woman with low self-esteem
To lay me out and ease my worried mind
While I'm winding down my dirty life and times
Who'll lay me out and ease my worried mind
While I'm winding down my dirty life and times
Numb as a Statue (Sayid)
04 Numb as a Statue.wma - 3.83MB
This to me seems to work for Sayid's current state of mind. Maybe it's just my take on the song! I'd do it, but I'm going to have two Sayid videos in a row and don't want to be pigeonholed too much.
Quote:
I'm numb as a statue
I may have to beg, borrow or steal
Some feelings from you
So I can have some feelings too
I'm pale as a ghost
You know what I love about you
That's what I need the most
I'm gonna beg, borrow or steal
Some feelings from you
I'm gonna beg, borrow or steal
So I can have some feelings too
I don't care if it's superficial
You don't have to dig down deep
Just bring enough for the ritual
Get here before I fall asleep
Ain't nothing special
When the present meets the past
I've always taken care of business
I've paid my first and last

So, here's the trick:
Recommend a book to the person above you, based on their preferences. State one book you really liked and why, and one book you really disliked and why. The next person should recommend you a book and state their like/dislike, so they can in turn get a recommendation. (In the interest of fairness, please don't post within two recommendations of your last one! Spread the love, as it were.)
Because I'm starting this off, I'll offer a general recommendation (since there's nobody above me.)
Recommendation:Never Let Me Go, by Kazuo Ishiguro, is what inspired this thread. It's science fiction for people who don't read science fiction, in the way that '1984' or 'A Clockwork Orange' are read by non-genre people. It presents a sad and terrifying world, and is brilliantly written.
Like: I like The Lies of Locke Lamora, by Scott Lynch. It's a crime caper in fantasy clothes: Locke (no relation to Johnny boy) is a gentleman thief in an analogue of Renaissance-era Venice. Fun, tough-minded, and fairly crisp writing: It's not trying to be The Lord of the Rings, and it's all the better for it.
Dislike: Ayn Rand bores the high holy hand-grenade out of me. She's sanctimonious, but atop that, she's also a bad writer (the only book of hers I could deal with was Anthem, primarily because it's a ripoff of Zamyatin's We.) I've read The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, but once was enough.
