Ok l didn't know where else to post this thread so l just stuck it here. Ok the question is What Was Your First Lost Music Vid you ever made if or if it wasn't on LVI. Just wondering.
Mine was my Charlie/Claire vid "l'll Stand By You" by the pretenders. l seen "Raised By Another" and l knew l had to make a C/C vid after that fantastic episode. lf you can't tell, l'm a huge Chaire shipper. So anyway l think my C/C vid turned out pretty great for a first timer. lf you havn't seen it yet l don't know if Hobbes is still hosting it or not in HHH but if you wanna see it just let me know and l'll upload it through YSI for ya.
Ok so lets hear what these fantastic vidders we have here at LVI have made in the past.

When Good Vids Get RAMmed... |

I moved this answer out of the "What Vids Are We Working On???" thread because I felt it was too involved and perilously close to thread-hogging. *oink oink* It's the heart-wrenching tale of a Viddergirl, her almost finished Angsty Jack vid, and her RAM-challenged computer. Enjoy...
Hobbes wrote: | I still don't get that "not enough RAM to finish my vid thing" are you SURE you're using the right term there? I never thought Random Access Memory was anything more than the speed that your computer can load things and such (so higher RAM for you would mean your computer.... being able to run two programs at once! ) |
Yep, I'm certain about my terminology. In fact, if I get on any more intimate terms with the RAM, then I'm gonna demand that it buys me a ring... But, since you asked...
After having the computer shut itself off on me a couple of times (or giving me the infamous "Blue Screen of Death" ), I poked around and found how to call up Task Manager, which among other things, will give you a read on how much RAM you're using right at that very moment. More precisely, it's telling you how much over your RAM you're using, since it's actually a record of your paging file activities. (For those of you lucky enough to not have to know this, the paging file is part of your virtual memory, the RAM being one part and the paging file being basically a part of your hard drive that's been sorta designated as emergency RAM.)
So before I open WMM, I open Task Manager first and position it so that I can keep an eye on it at all times. With no applications open, the RAM is usually at 202 MB. Launching WMM takes it to around 260, just over the 256 MB RAM. But the problem kicks in when I open a project -- Angsty Jack, in this case. The song is 3:56 minutes long, I've got vid clips installed up to 2:40, leaving more than a minute still to be vidded. When I open AJ, the RAM shoots to 450 MB.
At this point, the computer will keep working but it's getting sluggish and WMM tends to stop responding -- not just the vid or audio hanging up, but literally going dead to the point that you have to resort to a full reboot.
Hobbes wrote: | So what exactly is the problem with the angsty Jack video? what does it say when you try to save it? |
I've found that it takes anywhere from 100 to 300 more MB of RAM to save a project in WMV form. That's 100 to 300 over what it's running just to have the project open. So even if I could add the rest of the vid clips in and the RAM not go higher than 500, it'll still require 600 MB at the very least to save, but it's more likely to need closer to 800. The highest I've ever seen the paging file go is 700 (to save my April contest vid and it was only 1:39!) and the computer was thisclose to shutting down. (It's sorta like a circuit breaker getting thrown; the computer shuts itself down to prevent damage from being overloaded.)
So this is why I figure it's no use to even try to finish Angsty Jack right now. It ought to be able to open the project file, but depending on how high the RAM goes, the computer will bog down exponentially the more clips I add. RAM does govern how many applications are open at the same time, but it's also handling all of the editing of the clips for your vids in progress. And any program that has an "undo" to it? That's also being handled by the RAM. Which is why I have to turn off the "undo" command when I build animations in Animation Shop. It's a pain because if I make a mistake, I can't just Ctrl+Z it and have it come right back. But it keeps the RAM from having to work so hard.
Okay, so this was probably a lot more than anybody ever wanted to know. Which is why I put it off by itself, so much the easier for the mods to delete... But, there you have it. The sad, strange saga of "Aislynn And Her Neurotic Computer." Never say I didn't tell y'all a nice bedtime story, hm?
Oh, and yes the problem ought to be solved by adding more RAM. And I should note that I'm in no way a computer expert. So anybody who actually knows about these things is probably sitting here with their hands over their eyes, going, "She's telling it ALL WRONG! That's NOT what this or that does!!!" My apologies. I haven't had any choice but to do my own research and try to perform massive software surgery on this poor thing to keep it going all this time. This is just how I've come to understand how and why things work -- or don't work...
Now, children, next time, let Auntie Aislynn regale you with the thrilling tale, "Aislynn's Computer And Its Infestation Of Over 3,000 Pieces Of Spyware!" Now that one's a spine-tingler for sure, ya betcha!
~Aislynn
PS - And if you want to look at your paging file, this is how you get to it in XP (other versions of Windows, I'm not sure how you find it, if you even can - the version of Windows I worked with prior to this computer was actually Windows 3.1. Anybody remember that one??? ) :
Right click an empty spot on the blue task bar, left click "Task Manager," then click the Performance tab, which gives you an EKG-like readout of the CPU and the paging file's usage history. You might find it interesting to see what it goes to while you're working on a vid, who knows?

Summary: Claire has the baby as Charlie wants to profess his true feelings.
"Charlie!" Claire said walking into their cave. Charlie was attempting to peel some fruit.
"Yes?" he started to use his teeth on the fruit.
"I'm having contractions." she said, trying to stay calm.
"Oh that's nice." he looked back down at the fruit, thought for a second and looked back up at the beautiful Claire. His eyes grew wide and he jumped up.
"O.k. Claire! Everything is going to be alright. Nobody is going to panic!" Charlie was talking really quickly. "Breathe in, breathe out." He snapped his fingers, "We need Jack."
"Charlie!" Claire said, "you need to stay calm!"
"Calm? I am calm. I'm perfectly fine. I mean you're having a baby! I can be ca-." Claire kissed him.
"Claire! This is not the time to be kissing!" Charlie said while Claire giggled. "We need to get Jack."
Before he left, Charlie kissed Claire one more time and walked out of the cave.
"Jack! JACK!" Charlie ran over to Kate, "Where's Jack?"
"He's off somewhere, cutting wood." Kate stood up, "What's wrong?"
"Claire! Baby! Now!" He pointed to the cave.
"Charlie. Stay with Claire, I'll go find Jack." Kate ran off while Charlie went to the cave. He pulled back the tarp separating their cave from the rest. Claire was lying on her back on their makeshift bed.
"It's O.k. Claire," Charlie said walking over to her side, "I'm here." He grabbed her hand and she smiled.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
After many long hours and a few crushed bones in Charlie's hand, the baby was born.
"It's a boy." Jack said, handing the baby to Claire. Jack then left the cave to give them some privacy.
"What are you going to name him?" Charlie asked Claire.
"I don't know. What do you think I should name him?"
"Well, if you really want to know, I think we should name him Thor, god of thunder." Claire laughed.
"Yeah right! How about David."
"David, it is." Charlie said and kissed Claire on the cheek.
"Come on. Let's put this little boy in his crib." Charlie said. He stood up, holding David and put him in the crib.
"Charlie?"
"Yes, luv."
"Will you sing David a lullaby?" Claire asked and Charlie nodded.
"Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket,
Never let it fade away;
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket,
Save it for a rainy day...."
When Charlie finished the song he looked over at Claire and saw that she was fast asleep. He kissed her on the forehead and left the caves. He walked over to Jack.
"Hey, Jack. Thanks for everything." Charlie said.
"No problem, " Jack said, "How's the baby?"
"David's fast asleep in his little crib."
"And Claire?"
"Also asleep."
"Good. She is going to need a lot of rest for the next few days." Jack said. Charlie sat down on a rock.
"Something troubling you, Charlie?" Jack asked with concern.
"No, I mean, not really, yes there is."
"Well, do you want to tell me?"
"Yes. NO! I don't know." Charlie stood up and paced back and forth. "Have you ever been in love Jack?"
Jack looked over at a certain brunette filling up a water bottle.
"Yes, I think I have."
"Well, right now, I am madly in love with someone and I can't get her off my mind."
"Claire?"
"No Jack, Shannon!" Charlie said sarcastically, "Of course it's Claire! I don't know what to do. I want to tell her I love her but what if she doesn't feel the same way about me?"
"Charlie, I'm sure-" Jack was interrupted.
"I mean, I am a bloody ex-rock god and former drug addict. She's beautiful, carefree, and," Charlie sighed, "perfect."
"I think you should just tell her." Jack said.
"Yeah, I guess your right. Thanks for the help, Jack!" Charlie started to walk off but then turned around.
"You should listen to your own advice sometimes, you know." Charlie said.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
Charlie just grinned and walked away.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The next few days, Charlie was in and out of the caves getting things for Claire, so she wouldn't have to get up. He even guarded their cave when she was breastfeeding.
"Claire," Charlie said walking into their cave, one day, "I was wondering if you were up to going on a walk with me. I figured we could take David and show him the sunset on the beach."
"That's a great idea." Claire said getting up, she got David out of the crib, "Let's go."
When Charlie and Claire made it to the beach, they walked down it until they couldn't see camp anymore. They sat down in the sand and watched the sunset.
"Claire, there's something I want to tell you." Charlie said. All of a sudden, he found it very difficult to breathe.
"What is it Charlie?"
"Well, I love you. I have loved you since the day we met on this bloody island." Charlie said.
Claire smiled, "I love you too."
They leaned in toward each other and kissed.
